    Expansive Security Monitoring

The Lorex security system is very comprehensive. It includes four cameras, but can be expanded with more cameras. They record at 4k, have an alarm that can be remotely turned on, and a motion activated warning light. They also have excellent night vision, and because they record in 4k, you can zoom in as much as 16x. With 2TB of storage, the system can record as much as you need, even over extended vacations and travel. One of the best elements of savings of the Lorex cameras, is that there is no monthly monitoring fee. Pay the initial purchase price, then you are done. No extra bills. If you are not genuinely handy, I would recommend a professional installation for these cameras.

I currently have a wireless system and was so tired of cameras losing connection and even worse changing batteries in the cameras every 30-90 days. When I finally got this hooked up ( it is wired and requires running wires) it was totally worth it. The picture is amazing and it’s easy to navigate and see history ( wireless require additional fees). I bought the wireless thinking it would be easy but in the long run this is the way to go.

This is my first experience with any type of security cameras or system. The cameras are wired, so you have to figure out placement and bring all the camera wires (rated for indoors/in-wall only) back to the included DVR. This might present a problem in some houses, but our older house has plenty of ways to set it up. Got the cameras placed and working properly fairly easily, the picture quality is good and it has different options to record (always on, motion detection, etc). The system can be linked to your home network, so you can access it from your computer or you can even access it off-site via their mobile app. I'm sure it will take me some time to figure out all the DVR options, such as the alarms and "active deterrence" features, but so far the system seems good.

I upgraded from a previous Lorex system, so the installation of the DVR was pretty easy. I had the cables moved, the cameras re-named, SSL enabled, and the static IP configured in about 15-20 minutes. The new system uses the Lorex Home app instead of the Lorex Cloud app, and it does seem to have improved features. I was able to quickly configure the "SmartZone" on each camera to ignore trees and other things that would trigger motion alerts all the time. I do like that there's an "activities" tab in the app to quickly jump to video clips of motion events for all the cameras. This is getting it closer to the capabilities that something like the Arlo cameras have, which is great. There is also now the capability to configure Person/Vehicle detection in the motion detect settings. Unfortunately, I've not had very good results with that working yet. Another caveat with that is it only seems to be supported on the first 4 channels of the DVR. I do wish there was still the ability to change the playback speed (1x, 2x, 4x, etc.) when viewing the motion detect clips. You can slide the bar to jump around, but if you're looking for a particular quick event it's hard to find that way. Also, the clips don't always get an updated thumbnail image and it defaults to the regular Lorex image. Neither of these is a big problem to me, but others might be annoyed. Overall, I think this is a great system with 4K cameras for a great price.

Stay Away - Notifications Are Slow and Worthless

The Lorex Surveillance System tries to be a great home security camera solution but falls short in one large way (hence the 1 star rating). Please note that this is a WIRED system so you could spend a large amount of time installing the cameras and running the wires. Not an easy job in many cases. First the good: * The picture of the cameras is really nice and clear. * Night vision works well in seeing in the dark * The LED light on the camera is a nice touch and can be set to come on automatically when motion is detected. * You can set the area within the camera’s viewpoint to trigger alerts thereby excluding areas you don’t want to have trigger (street, etc.) The bad: * There is no 2-way audio. * You need a mouse and monitor to setup the system (it’s 2019 - should be mobile. * Sometimes the system freezes when trying to conduct an action. For example, if you trigger the siren, sometimes the app just has a spinning wheel and does nothing. You have to restart the app. The really, really bad: The notifications are horrendous. Absolutely worthless. It can take 45 to 60 seconds for an alert to trigger on your phone that activity was detected. This is a very long time when it comes to security. This absolutely must be fixed by Lorex to make this system a good solution for your security cameras. Also, the alerts are “dumb” meaning you get a notification that activity was detected, but there is no preview of the activity. Would be very simple to include this feature to make the alerts useful. When you click on this “dumb” alert, you are taken to the video recording that was triggered and then you have to click the play button to watch the video. That’s 2 clicks to see what triggered the camera. Not a good experience for a security camera system. Overall the system has the potential to be great, but with the failure of the notifications, I can’t recommend this system at this time. Hopefully Lorex can make some needed app and firmware updates to make this system a solid security camera system. Until then, I recommend looking elsewhere.

First not to brag, but having two homes and having set up the main house with a 1080P POE security system myself two years ago I was familiar with security placement and how to route wires. The POE security system installation was a breeze due to single cable for video and power to cameras coming straight off of the NVR box. Unfortunately I decided to go the route of this Lorex higher resolution security system but not POE but rather BNC cables and separate power for each camera. So while video run is a straight cable from camera to NVR box, power cable was another cable run to nearest power outlets for each camera. So I knew that going in but wow it does mean a lot, lot more effort and time. Once I mapped out locations of each camera and supplying power to each camera, thank god only 4 cameras need on the smaller faction house!

First of all, I recommend going with wireless if you plan to use these outside. Otherwise you will have to be creative with getting the wires ran from the base station to the cameras. I set mine up in my basement so it was not very difficult. Setup can be a little confusing but it is not super difficult. Picture quality is really good if you pair with a monitor or TV. The 2 TB hard drive provides plenty of recording storage. The cameras look professional and just there sight may discourage an intruder. The positive with a wired connection is not losing connection as easily as wireless. If the wires are not hid well an intruder could just cut them so keep that in mind when mounting.

Pros: Easy to install Easy interactive - don't need to read up on it.. just click around Free web based live view (don't need to get the premium Cloud version) Cons: 60 ft of cable won't get your camera far enough - will have to buy 100 ft cable from Lorex. Decent price and heavy duty.. don;t buy cheap cable from China. BNC connectors are always hard to seat. If you have big fingers like me, good luck Need to buy 1.5 amp DC power for very long runs like I had (125 feet) Otherwise, great system for the price. Cameras are great. Get this.

NVR stopped recording after system auto update

Lorex customer service is terrible! My system stopped recording right after a system software update. It worked great before then, and it’s a known issue if you read forums online. They told me they couldn’t do anything and that I would have to order another NVR device. I’m done with Lorex… Buyers beware

Does not work with Google Home!

I have spent the last week installing this system and getting everything setup. Setup the App, authorized it with Google. Only to find out it doesn't work with Google. Spent hours on hold with Lorex Tech support, was sent code updates that don't install, and then I'm told it's a problem with Google. Spent time talking with Google about the problems, and they do not have the lorex system as a known to be working with Google. Call Lorex back, and I'm on hold for 30 mins before they answer the phone, spend another 2 hours troubleshooting to be told oh it's doesn't work with google. The code is wrong, and we don't have new code, or know when or if new code will be available to make it work with google, sorry.

Out of the box the HD was not working. No Recording. 2nd unit same problem. Called support, talked to India and was told to open the DVR case. That's when I told them that its not going to happen. I don't work for Lorex and will not be the repairman on a NEW unit. I am returning the unite for the money back including the $500.00 installation done by the Geek Squad.
