The cameras are over rated. The cameras are advertised as having 150 feet range. This is an exaggeration. Even at 30 feet the resolution is so poor, that one can not make out license plate numbers, type of vehicle. or whether persons are male or female. The night vision is advertised as being full color, when in reality, it is black and white. The range is also misrepresented. The range is more realistically 25 feet rather than the advertised 150 feet.

This system was very easy to setup. However you do need a monitor or an HDMI port on your TV. The package includes the cameras and the recorder with 2TB, a mouse and the wiring and power supplies. Most laptops don't have HDMI-in so using a monitor or using one of your HDMI inputs on a TV will provide you the necessary display. The quickstart guide takes you through setup to create your basic setup and it's a good idea to download the Lorex Home app so you can view the cameras from your phone from anywhere (if you connect the Lorex recorder to your home router). It's not WiFi so you have to use an RJ45 cable - a short one is supplied as well as a short HDMI cable. The video is very crisp and this system has 4 cameras which you can name so it's easy to know where you are viewing. The 60 foot cables are a bit too short but you can make do with them. You must preplan so that your recorder is in a central location and your camera cables can all reach the recorder. However, the cables have industry standard connectors for wired DVR security systems and you can find 120 foot or 200 foot cables at many local stores including Best Buy and even Home Depot. If you need to run the cables through your attic to reach your cameras, you will need the longer cables. The cameras have many useful features like the ability to turn on a mini flood light and even make a siren sound. You can run the system without a router connection, but the ability of the system to be monitored remotely (say you are in a restaurant) is important and easy to setup, so I recommend connecting it to your home router. The software can recognize if it sees a person and you can also just take a look from anywhere and turn the flood light or siren on to scare someone away. Of course you have the ability to record what the motion-activated cameras sees, with snapshots or videos. I’ve had battery powered systems and though the install is easier, they are not as useful because you have to schedule them only certain hours to avoid running the batteries out too quickly, and eventually say every 3 months, you need to change the batteries. With a wired system you can run the cameras all the time – so I think that is a better way to go; albeit a little more install time. I do recommend these cameras as a must to protect your home and family. At this price for a 4K Ultra HD Security System with four 4K motion detecting cameras it is a steal. Unless I'm doing something wrong this is just a video camera. Not security. It less me know of my parked car. Never an incoming vehicle or person. Very frustrated with this system.

After installing and using this Lorex System I have mixed feelings about it. Overall the system functions as expected using the default values but there is very little information on how to configure the various options and what impact they have on the system. I found when I set the camera recording levels to the “best” quality the mobile app live view would fail with no explanation. The overall solution lacks guidance and information for anything set beyond the default values. The Lorex hardware and software both seem to be quite usable and reliable however the lack of support and guidance in setting up the various options ruins the overall experience for anyone who wants to use the system beyond the default values. Also, the use of bnc cables even with Siamese power taps is still not as convenient or widely usable as Ethernet cables. What I liked about the system: - The controller initial set up was straight forward once I got past the monitor resolution issue mentioned below. - The video images are clear and its easy to zoom in for close ups. - There are options to enhance your camera image quality like saturation and chroma. - The Smart Motion Sensing worked well and setting up the motion detection zones was simple. This is one area that Lorex does provide good information. - The night vision is good but not very colorful under normal night lighting. - The mobile app was easy to use and the notifications were quick and consistent. - The system provides great flexibility when you set up notifications and alarms. - There is a home and away setting as well as an “alarm all/disarm all” type setting. - Even though the local interface, the web interface and the home app have totally different screens its fairly easy to figure them out. The ability to access the video locally on the controller or remotely using a pc, tablet or phone is plus. - You can access the controller from a PC using Microsoft’s Edge browser and the controllers IP address. - The system records a main stream which is 4k but it can only be viewed as 4k video using the controller’s hdmi cable that is attached to a 4k monitor. There is a sub stream which defaults to a 704x480 resolution and is used to stream video to any remote device like a pc, tablet or phone. This helps limit the data requirements on the remote devices. What I don’t like about the system: - No auto sense for the display monitor settings, this was problematic for me during the initial set up because my 1080p monitor did not work. I had to use a 4k tv to set the system up initially. - The wired mouse is cheap and limits the distance you can sit from the controller. The system does not support a wireless mouse. - The current software only supports 7fps in any resolution. I tried various combinations and could not get a higher resolution even though the camera supports 15fps. - There are a lot of options when it comes to setting up your cameras and Lorex provides very little information on what the optimal settings are. I don’t think the typical home customer is going to know the benefits of using CBR vs VBR or what their bit rate should be for a given resolution! - There are no help screens or on-line explanations for most of the options. There is a manual but it explains the “what” an option is vs the why an option should be selected and no-where is the impact on the controller or hard drive explained for any of the options. This is very important because when I selected certain options my live video feeds would stop working with no explanation as to why. Luckily if you run everything in default it works consistently. - The use of BNC connectors and analog cameras are outdated in the digital world. The cables provided were in-wall certified but are not supposed to be exposed to the weather which can make installing outside cameras more difficult. - The camera mounts are plastic and the screws to adjust the camera’s angle felt cheap and were difficult to torque due to their quality. - The camera deterrent light is not bright enough to be much of a deterrence. - On the front of the controller there is an alarm button with no visible labeling. It looks like an on/off switch at first glance.

If looking for a system to just have cameras to view then this one is ok. The problem is with the Lorex Home App. You can view your cameras while away from home but if you are expecting to be alerted when something enters your property then forget about it. Have had this system installed for over 3 months and have spent hours on the phone with the Lorex support and they cannot resolve the problem. I use an iPhone SE and cannot get alerts from my system. Lorex support is poor. If you can even understand who you are speaking to they will have you trouble shoot the same things over and over till they finally tell you that they will get back with you. Do not waste money on this system because having a home security system that does not alert you when something happens is pretty pointless.

The system comes well packaged and neatly organized. Setup of the base unit is pretty straightforward with getting everything connected. The base unit is rather large and the white color looks cool with my other media devices. There is a separate power connection for the base unit and the cameras. The connectors for the cameras to the base unit are very hard to lock in place. You have to push really hard and twist to lock. I'm not sure why they have a locking feature on a unit that will not be moving. My fingers got really sore getting all four connected and I had to get pliers to get the last one on and I bent the casing. I got it on but it may not come back off. The cameras come with 60 feet of cable and this seems like a lot when you take out of the package, but does not go that far once you start getting creative with getting it ran outside the house. I was not able to get it ran to the far side of my house and it is not that large. 120 feet of cable would have been better. The cameras mount easily with an included stick on drill pattern. They are fully adjustable in all directions and have wide field of view. Once everything is place, the display looks amazing on my 65' 4K TV. I have the display showing all four cameras at one time. The setup menu is a little confusion because I can only get the live feed to display in 1920X1080 but it records in full 4K. The 2TB hard drive will record 24 hours with all 4 cameras in 4K and then it rewrites over the oldest data first. Playback is easy and has the recording in time fragments that are easy to navigate. Motion detection works well but I had to turn off due to getting so many from the neighbors moving about. Nighttime display is very good with little light. There is little lag in live viewing. It is worth the effort if you are looking for a wired system. I suggest getting it professionally installed unless you like a real challenge. I prefer going with a wireless system, but I'm very pleased with the picture on my TV and the ease of use of the mobile application. The mobile application allows full control and viewing of the cameras from anywhere.

A top surveillance system requiring brain work

The Lorex - 8-Channel, 4-Camera Indoor/Outdoor Wired 4K UHD 2TB DVR Surveillance System - White is easy to set up by just plugging in cables. In a few minutes, I was ready to run the Lorex setup wizard. The wizard offers two ways to complete setup, by local with no internet and by network for remote viewing. After the wizard completed, I installed the Lorex Home App on my phone and then I was ready for fine tuning the Lorex Surveillance System to my desired specifications. Once I completed that task, the app opened in a live view format and started streaming from every camera to my phone and TV. The Lorex Surveillance System notifies me on my phone screen with the notification: Lorex Home - Someone was detected by Living Room Cam 4. Videos and pictures taken in the light are full depth and clear. Video and pictures taken in the dark show clear details and people are fully recognizable. I was able to record video and pictures, but not delete them. A major problem with the device is the short Ethernet cable and short HDMI cord. In order to connect the system together, the router and TV must be within three feet of each device, because each cable is only three feet long. Otherwise the need to purchase a longer Ethernet and HDMI cable are mandatory. Outside of that I found no other problems. Installing and adjusting the camera is no problem with a drill for the anchors and a screwdriver to loosen the camera joint. It most definitely is not a plug and play setup. It requires reading the limited guides and then going on the website to read further instructions on how to hone the Lorex - 8-Channel, 4-Camera Indoor/Outdoor Wired 4K UHD 2TB DVR Surveillance System - White.

This Lorex camera was super easy to setup and route to my 4k TV which this system supports. 1. Setup was fool proof. Like 10 mins 2. Camera mounting and wiring was the hardest and longest part. 3. Wires are plenty long. I recommend placing away from and flat open air vertical spaces with some type of water proofing if placed outside. 4. App and security was a breeze and wow these camera's react fast. 5. Has the ability to set motion and schedule for recording for each camera. Who ever designed this interface knew that they needed to have this as a priority 6. I was able to trigger each camera and set no motion grid for each camera . Took a bit to tweak. But well worth the setup time. keeps your pets from tripping the camera if one is inside like I do. 7. If you can put shelf's up and run low voltage wiring you can install this. 8. Just plan for a few hours for a ranch home like mine. But install get more involved if you have to run between floors. I have a ranch home so it was easy for me. Consult a installer if you don't feel comfortable. I would rate this a 6 out 10 difficulty rating. 9. Peace of mind can send you alerts of motion and custom timer for camera timer trigger. It also has an option to have Sound and warning. I never got mine to work but the camera alone was worth it. 10. This was my first full install but very easy , Also used my keyboard track pad instead of included mouse work with no issue's Comes with HDMI cable, network cable, mounting hardware for camera's, power splitter for camera's and unit. No need to go to the hardware store for any but a ladder if you don't have one to use.
