For the price it does what I need it to do which is record and pause live TV. The only downside is not being able to watch 1 channel while recording a different one.

This unit is AWESOME. Here is why I bought it. I wanted a cheap way to record NFL football games and TV shows so I could watch and fast forward through the commercials later. At $49.99 how could you beat it. I wanted to be able to take my recordings with me, which I can do by recording on either a Flash Drive or portable hard drive and then plugging them into my computer or another TV. I wanted to be able to rewind TV, which I can do with this unit by just recording what I am watching and then pausing, and rewinding as necessary. Also functions as a converter box though I didn’t need that as I have a newer TV. Great product at a great price. Highly recommended.

Very decent product for basic recording of HDTV

Our original HD DVR, a SONY DHG-HDD250 stopped working when the TV Guide system was taken off air. We could not set the time, or program shows and eventually with power outages it became a very pretty and expensive boat anchor. Our second try was a Digital Stream DPH1000R which we had for several years. It was kind of clunky did work. The tuner was weak and during the several channel shuffles in the Portland, OR area we lost first ABC then CBS, over the air. As I record shows after 10 pm, like Colbert and Agents of Shield, it couldn't scan those channels so off to Goodwill it went and we found on You Tube Colbert and Shield, as well as some others. As my work schedule changed and there are some new OTA shows I'd liek to watch I tried several other DVR's. The Terk and the RCA have poor tuners and even though they claim will work with a USB thumb drive, the result was pixely or choppy images. For $40 the Media Sonic Homeworx, works, and works well! Great tuner, and with an external USB hard drive records perfectly. I had a spare 100 Gig Samsung solid state drive in a housing . All good. I did try a USB thumb drive and got a pixelated and chopping recording. Is this a perfect solution, sort of! I got used to the bad remote with the Digital Stream unit, this is similar to that. I only need to time shift one channel, so I am happy. For $40 it exceeded my expectations.

At first I bought the Aluratek and tried it out but began having the same issues as the previous reviewer, the unit kept rebooting itself so I returned it and bought the MediaSonic. The MediaSonic unit works great, I plugged in a 32 GB flash drive and set a schedule and BOOM my shows get recorded every time like clock work! I really like the parental control function for my kids. One thing I really like is being able to plug the flash drive with the recorded content into my computer, copying the content over and then watching it on the plane. Makes it easy to catchup on my shows. Did I mention the DVR capabilities are free and there aren’t any subscriptions like most of the big players have?

Had this 1 week, so assuming no early failure, this is a great buy. As stated, manual is not too helpful, but the screen walks you thru the set up easily. Recording was easy, select screen, your channel. your program, and then edit for different date, repeat etc. Find the recording on the 3.0 USB, click "Hold" (go figure why called that) to get full screen. Sync of voice and video are just fine. Compared to my old Magnavox recorder, this was a cinch.

A miracle when it works, usually doesn't.

I have two of these and every day there are multiple problems with them. Problems include programmed channels dropping out, channels locking up during viewing, unwanted channels repeatedly added after being deleted, channels pixelating, The only reason I keep them is for playback when they actually do record a program, which is almost a miracle. Customer service is very poor or non existent. Do yourself a favor and look for something else.

This Mediasonic box amazed me by by picking up more TV channels than my 6 year old Samsung could. It is also a DVR- it records the shows while you watch or on a schedule. It records to a thumb drive only ( haven't tried that yet ). AND, it has a great program guide ( EPG ) that my TV no longer has. I am happy.
