Customers are saying

Customers commend the Portal Go's sound and picture quality, ease of use, and convenient touch screen. Many appreciate its portability and good battery life, along with the added benefit of the Bluetooth speaker. While some found the price to be a bit high, the positive feedback on the core features outweighs this concern.

The portal is a nice size for carrying around a device that is much like a personal assistant. The speakers have boom and the case is bumper resistant. The stutter over the camera is a nice privacy feature.

A Device For All Age Groups

The best part of the Facebook Portal Go is that it is portable and can literally be enjoyed by all age groups. It is simple to set up and even easier to use. Set up is very simple but time consuming. Place the docking station and portal where you want it to stay, plug it in and follow the online instructions. It will do an update in the set up process and states on screen that the update will take about 20 minutes and I found that to be true, so be patient. I recently moved halfway across the country and love that I can video chat with family back East. I just pick this up and walk around to show them my new place and even got to show them the yard outside. While video chatting with friends or family you stay in focus with it while you walk around the room and the camera will keep the focus directly on you as long as you don’t move too far to either side of it. In other words, it won’t just stay focused on what is directly in front of it. It will stay focused on you. The look of this device is very similar to a smart home device I already own. On the top, this has an on/off button for the camera/microphone. It also has separate volume up (+) and volume down (-) buttons. The display is a touch screen. On the portal screen you can add from a selection of apps and websites and be able to view them. Very much like using a tablet. If you don’t want anyone seeing you on camera, simply slide the cover at the top of the screen which is located right above the display. You can still use voice commands with the cover over the camera and make calls, but no one can see you. The speaker is of good quality and I was surprised how good it actually is. It’s great for listening to your favorite music on Amazon Music. Just tell it, “Alexa, play my music” and it will play through your Amazon Alexa account. I love that you can add some of the popular apps for listening to music by selecting it from the touch screen. Also access music by saying, “Hey portal open Spotify”, Pandora, etc. The display can also play videos from YouTube to Facebook Watch, etc. Video calling on this is up to your imagination. I recently sent my daughter to the store and she wasn’t sure what brand of salt to get. She Facebook Messenger video called me from her cell phone and I answered on the Portal. She showed me which brands were available and I chose one. She had tried to call me on my cell phone, but I had had it turned off. She knew the Portal was always on and tried that since I didn’t answer my phone. The battery will last about 5 hours with the screen on and about 14 hours with the screen off of one charge. I set this up with my Amazon Alexa and it is like having a portable 10 inch Echo device and the Facebook Portal all-in-one. Talk about saving money.

This is my second Facebook portal. I loved the first one but it had a few drawbacks. I feel like this new portal go fixes some of those issues. The biggest drawback of the previous version was that it had to be plugged into the wall limiting where you put it. The new portal go solves this problem by including a battery and dock so that it can be picked up and walk around with it. Or just simply move it from one room to another. The only downside to this design is that it is a pretty hefty device. That being said I would not recommend holding it for long periods of time but being able to move it around and set on a flat surface is convenient. It also does have a handle on the back making it easier to carry around. The technology in the camera is very good. If you have the device set down somewhere it will track the person on camera and zoom in or out depending on how many people are in the camera. The speaker is decent for listening to music but unfortunately you are limited to only a couple different services. That brings me to the only downside of this device. It is somewhat limited on what services or apps it works with. Granted it does more than just Facebook but I still wish it could do more and act more as a tablet. One of my favorite things is that it has built in Alexa. My entire house is controlled off of Alexa and so the ability to control everything by voice or on the touch screen makes things so convenient. I would recommend this device to anyone who mainly uses it for Facebook. That is what it does best and more messenger. It can make video calls very well utilizing this service. Another downside is I believe it requires a Facebook account to even use it so if you do not have Facebook I would not recommend it.

The Facebook Portal Go is yet another take on a smart display, this time with a new form factor and other enhancements. Unlike smart speakers and displays from other vendors, this one is now practically a 10-inch tablet with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, built-in stereo loud speakers and woofer, multiple beam-forming mics and a large enough battery to last several hours of video calling or 12+ hours of music. Make sure you bring the proprietary charging dock with you if you decide to travel with the Portal. The setup was easy, once plugged in for charging, just follow the easy instructions on the screen to connect to Wi-Fi and your Facebook or WhatsApp account. The Portal Go allows up to four accounts to be setup, so you can have multiple family members use it. There are many apps built-in but this is clearly designed to primarily be used for video calling. You can also use it for Zoom, WebEx and a few other less popular apps. As for Music apps, it has Tidal, Spotify, Pandora and iHeart Radio. Even though it integrates with Alexa voice commands, it does not have Amazon Music built-in. Also in terms of streaming video services, the popular ones like Netflix, Prime Video, HBO MAX, Hulu, etc are NOT included, though you could probably use most of them through the built-in web browser but it’s not optimal and seems quite slow. All in all, this is a great portable video calling device with solid secondary use as a music player, and a few other uses, which will serve the grandparents well in their frequent video calling a few thousands miles away from their grand kids.
