The long awaited sequel to Metroid Fusion is finally a reality. Metroid Dread takes from all previous entries in the series and greatly improves upon them making this the best playing game in the series to date. Simply just moving around in the game feels great. The game offers a fun environment to explore and a great story that doesn't ruin Samus' character unlike a certain other title. The collector's edition comes with the games itself, a steel book game case, a set of postcard sized holographic art cards depicting art from each of the previous mainline entries, and a big art book filled with tons of nice art from the series. In all honesty the price for this collector's edition is a bit steep for what is included, but as Metroid is notoriously a franchise that doesn't sell gangbusters when compared to Nintendo's other franchises, I personally feel it was worth it to support the series in hopes that we get more in the future.

The game, itself, is fantastic. As a longtime Metroid fan, I can't recommend it enough. Fast gameplay, good graphics, and very, very challenging.
As for the items in the Special Edition... they're OK. The box art is nice (especially the back!) but the box, itself, is pretty flimsy and easy to damage. The Steelbook case is OK for people that want that sort of thing, but I like the normal case artwork just fine. The art book is very well-made, with a hardback cover, but the art inside is lacking. The art from the classic Metroid games is fantastic, but is very limited compared to the art for Dread. I'd say Dread's artwork takes up about 75% of the pages. I would have rather seen more classic artwork.
Last but not least, the art cards are very impressive - probably the coolest thing in the set! They have a hologram finish and nice artwork, though they are blank of the back.
Is the Special Edition worth it? In my opinion, no. But if you plan on displaying the box and art cards, it may be worth picking up. For the rest of us, just get the standard game.

This is a fantastic game!!! It’s a great addition to the Metroid series and the gameplay and difficulty were a welcoming surprise when I first played this game! It’s the second best game after Super Metroid and that’s a very close second, this game is that good! Even better is the developer is still releasing updates for this game including two new difficulty modes and soon to be boss mode! The extras with this pack were awesome! I love the giant case, steel book case and art book, all fantastic! I’m lucky I was able to pre order this special edition when I did!

This game, especially if you are a longtime Metroid fan, has been long overdue. Story wise it makes a nice conclusion to the entire series but by no means is 'the end'. Controls take a bit to get used to but end up feeling smooth and intuitive. Visuals and music are top notch as you'd expect like previous games. Just a joy to play and feel the 'dread'. The collector stuff is nicely constructed and great to look at; totally not needed unless you're a super fan.

The steelbook is very beautiful, as well as the included art cards. The art book is hardcover and includes amazing concept artwork from the Metroid series while staying generally spoiler free. The game itself has quickly become my favorite in the franchise. As a Metroid fan who played and completed every Metroid game, Metroid Dread is an amazing evolution of the franchise in my opinion.

I will start off by saying to you that if you want a game that tells you where you need to go next, and point you to where you need to go, what you need to get, or what you need to shoot, then don't bother picking this up. This is not for you. There is very little hand holding in this game, like its predecessors, and you need to do a lot of trial-and-error to find your way through the labyrinth like planet. If you got the amiibo, try not using them on your first run, but they will give you extra health and missile ammo, which will come in handy for you, especially after the game's difficulty picks up its pace and doesn't give you too much breathing room. Don't get me wrong, the game is balanced, but it's going to be a better play for veterans of the series. The SE box (which sadly is no longer in stock) is a real jewel, worth every cent spent on it, but one thing I hated was getting ONLY the Steel Book case, and not the regular one. The cards with pictures of the old games are a good touch for nostalgia, and the artbook is big, heavy, and full of good pictures to feed your eyes with. TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS!!!

While it is great to have an original 2D Metroid game for the first time in nearly 20 years, the Special Edition may or not be worthwhile to you. It features the physical game in a hardshell case, a series of thick cards with cover art for each of the mainline games, as well as a great art book featuring art from the series, especially the new game.
The game itself is great, fluid, and fun. It's easily I would say the best in the series and worth picking up in some form or another. For the genre, it inspired this "Metroidvania" title sets some new standards and as it's name implies adds a sense of dread. The EMIs you encounter can only be defeated with a perfectly timed button press and you are intentionally trying to avoid them for a majority part of the game. As you traverse the map gaining new abilities and unlocking new locations everything from the music to the graphics, to the experience are top-notch. This is easily one of the best games I have played in a long time.

The product itself is awesome! Everything you could possibly want out of a current-gen game with Super Metroid vibes. The artbook is amazing, and even the art cards are a nice bonus.
However, the product was shipped in a bubble mailer with no protection, so the corners and sides are all dented and smashed up! Major bummer for this being a collector's edition -- especially considering the lack of replacements for an exchange.

so i'm not sure how i want to do this review. the game is amazing and one of the best nintendo games of the year so this review isn't about the game just the cheap best buy packaging for limited edition items. This item the "special edition" is beautiful much bigger than I expected. the steelbook is beautiful and the art book is huge everything is perfect except for best buy's flaw shipping service sending them out in bubble mailers ruining many people i know's special editions. If you are able to get this, as it's being scalped, you'll want to do a store pick up. Mine did have some wear after being shipped but not as bad as others i've seen. I just wish best buy would take better care in shipping their items. target, walmart, amazon, and gamestop ships these out in boxes. I always preferred shopping at best buy over these places but i will no longer buy certian items from them until they resolve this issue that i and many other customers face

Classic Metroid

I loved the classic Metroid games and the last console I had owned was the Wii. Metroid Dread got me excited about a return to classic Metroid that I bought a Switch specifically to play this game. I just absolutely love it, and the artbook was fascinating to look through. It's fun to see the classic artwork included, but also to see different designs for suits/characters that were proposed during the development of Dread.
I've played through the game itself twice, in normal and hard mode. I'm sure I'll play it again until I can get my clear time under 4 hours.... The aesthetic and gameplay hit all the right buttons, and I love the little details that build an atmosphere or just nod to the previous generations of Metroid games.

Beautiful collectors edition! I was very lucky to be able to find this at Best Buy when it was first released because scalpers purchased most of them up immediately.
As a long time Metroid fan I love the art book- it's very cool to see art from all of the main line games. The steel book makes an excellent display item, and of course the game is amazing!
Definitely a little more difficult than I'm used to with the older games, but they finally released an easy mode, so I can just have some fun in the game running around the planet. The controls are excellent and it feels really good to control Samus in this game!

I was very skeptical of whether I would enjoy this game because I wasn't a fan of Samus Returns on the 3DS (also developed by Mercury Steam). But, I was wrong. This is one of the best 2D Metroids I've ever played. It has the solid action and exploration you would expect from this game and everything works so well. I was most impressed by the map design. The map is fairly large and the backtracking required to obtain previously unreachable items is very intuitive. The game always takes you back to areas of the map via a different path, making it feel like less of a chore to hunt down items.
The art cards are neat and the art book is incredible. It's a big, hardcover book, packed full of art from most of the previous 2D Metroid games.
The only reason I'm removing a star is because I thought these came with the game in its original case + the SteelBook. This set only comes with the game inside the SteelBook. The UK version is the one that comes with both cases.

Sorry but I am doubtful you will get this at the time of my writing, I wish you could order this on BestBuy but scalpers are a menace, good luck.
That being said if you still want a review, then this is a beautiful special edition, it’s not jam packed with alot of crazy value but for the collector and diehard Metroid fan, this is awesome. It is all stored in a holographic box, in the box is the Steelbook and it’s gorgeous, the artbook is just as awesome and the last bit there are some postcards I believe, I mean I imagine that you came here for the physical goodies and not because of the gameplay review. I still need to play it ironically.

This box has some heft to it. The steel book looks great and the art book has a hardcover. I’m maybe halfway in to the game and it’s been mostly an awesome experience. The E.M.M.I parts haven’t been mostly insta kill stealth segments but there’s power ups to help deal with it. Those segments are kinda restricted to certain areas. I was trying to go fast and run through those sections but I’d get caught up in a little frustration. Overall the open nature of the game is really nice. There a bunch of boss fights and power ups. Good, classic Super Metroid feel.

As some others have said I wish the box was a bit more robust, it has the structeral rigidity of a small cereal box with heavier items inside, mine was prety good but I could see how it could get thrashed:( BUT not enough to drag the stars down, played a little bit and it looks awesome!! Last one I played was on the 3ds and this is night and day of course. Highly recommend if you can grab one its worth the extra loot!!!

I’m a big fan of the 2D Metroid games going all the way back to the beginning. I’ve been hoping for a new, modern version and Dread absolutely delivers.
Captures the classic Metroid feel and implements most of the advancements made over the years as well. You can definitely enjoy if it’s your first time but the game also rewards longtime fans. It’s very much “Metroid 5”.
The special edition is very nice with great extras. A nice treat for fans.
