Awesome ultra small laptop and great tablet

I had purchased the surface RT and while it was a great tablet, I decided to return it for the pro when it came out. The surface pro is an awesome device as long as you fully understand what it is and what it is not. As a full x86 windows 8 laptop, it is super small and lightweight. The 1920x1080 screen is beautiful and the touch input works extremely well. It is right up there with the touch input apple has on the iPad. You get a usb 3.0 port and micro sd slot which is very nice to have for expandability. As a tablet, you have a near perfect HD screen with superb touch sensitivity and the touch and type covers both work very well. While there aren't as many apps for windows 8 as there are for iOS or android, you have to remember that this is a very new OS and both apple and google have had years to grow their app stores. Also keep in mind that since this is full x86 windows 8, you can load any normal windows programs and have access to them as well. Personally, I have used an iPad and android tablets and moved over to surface primarily for using office at school. Having native office support is vastly superior to any office apps I tried on either competing tablets. Using office and the type keyboard is basically nothing different than a small super powerful laptop...except that it weighs 2 lbs and I can easily carry it around with me anywhere I need to go. Microsoft has created a great device here and the build quality and features are very impressive.

    love this thing!

I absolutely love my surface! Yes, it was expensive...but that was the price I was willing to pay to be an early adopter. I've been wishing for something like this for quite a few years. It is far from perfect, but what I can get done with is far greater than other tablets I've owned. While I could accomplish a lot with previous devices, I had to do a lot of workarounds too. The store is a little weak, and growing, but I don't need it because all my applications are running on it (primarily Office). I was quite pleased with performance given that it only has 4 GB of memory. And despite other gripes I have been able to type with it on my lap with a Type cover and I've gotten 5.5 hours of battery life doing basic web surfing, reading Kindle books, and Office usage. The only tweak I made was turning off Bluetooth and adjusting brightness down. By the way...I found that turning the brightness down just the right amount for my eyes made reading Kindle books quite tolerable. Something I haven't gotten with any PC platform to date. I highly recommend this thing to anyone willing to pay the price to be the earliest adopter. If you are at all squirmish about the price, then get something else, but if you just stop and think about exactly what this thing has for the price, you'll find that it's actually priced where it should be. Performance...I found the touch screen very responsive, as well as application performance. The handwriting recognition was pretty quick and accurate as well. It cold boots in about 5 secs. Restarts in about 5 secs as well. Apps typically open in about 1 -2 secs. Large PDF files take a few seconds longer to load. Some issues with the pages on the Metro version of IE, but switching to desktop mode helps that. BTW...I'm actually finding that I prefer to work with the full screen apps in Metro than desktop mode.

    Computer inside a Tablet!

To start off, when I was shopping for a new laptop, I wasn't expecting to pay over 500$. I got my Surface Pro in store where an associate sold me on this one, even after seeing other 'actual' laptops. It was beautiful on it's display and I thought I might try something new, even if it was scary at first. Pros: The Surface Pro is small and compact, easy to carry from place to place. For me, I am usually using it around an outlet so battery life isn't a problem, though it may be for others. You can switch back and forth between a desktop and the Windows 8 home screen, which is pretty neat since you can have your e-mail on a neater screen and still do work. You can also download apps from their store such as Netfilx or Skype to keep on the home page for easy access. The camera in the Surface Pro is not half bad, you get both a front and back facing one plus an app on the homepage. You have the option to combined your friends from Facebook, Skype, and E-mail to create on big list of contacts. Cons: Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the use of an attachable keyboard, but when I went to pick up my Surface Pro I was told I'd have to buy the keyboard separately at 130$ more! Maybe I just missed this in the fine print but still, it turns a 600$ computer into more than 700$. I did buy a keyboard because I bought the Surface Pro to write/ game with. (A quick mention about the keyboard, there are two kinds you can get, one that has keys surrounded by felt-like material [more expensive] or one that is completely felt-like material [cheaper but makes it harder to differentiate between keys.]) Also, The kickstand is wonderful only if you are in the perfect position. For example, if you're laying at anymore than 90° you may have to prop it up with something so you can see the screen. Something rather annoying I've noticed is when you either intentionally or accidentally turn it to portrait position, if you happen to be on the internet and are unlucky it will freeze for a few moments and Adobe Flash will crash. This happens about 50% of the time. This does not come with Office accessories and though it says here online, the salesman forgot to mention that one even though I told him I'd need it. And lastly, the warranties best buy offers are that much more expensive, I opted out. Windows offers a free 1 year on it already. To sum it all up, the Surface Pro is an amazing machine to be stuffed inside of a tablet. Although there are quite a few cons for myself personally, I've managed to overlook or find a way around them. There are so many other pro's I have yet to mention because I'm not fully done exploring. It really does make a difference between from one person to the next. If you are willing to pay a bit more in accessories but want a beautifully fast tablet/laptop, the Surface Pro is your product!

I am glad I waited for this product. Everything about it has been just AWESOME. You will have to forgive me for my short review. I have been on my surface pro for the past 8 hours and going on no sleep for 36 hours. In a nutshell, this is what everyone that uses a pc for has been waiting for. I have already edited photos on the pro using PhotoShop, and I am writhing this review on the pro. Sure the battery life could be a little better, but I have no problem with it. If I need to do extensive photo editing, I will be behind my 26 inch monitor. But for being on the go, and to have time to kill, the pro is a perfect fit for me. I have watched a movie on the pro also. The screen........AWESOME!!!!! All I can say is THANKS Microsoft, you hit a homerun! I also would like to thank the guys at the Best Buy on outer loop in Louisville!!!

This product seems to have a mind of its own. The touch buttons are inconsistent and inaccurate flying all over the place. I am disappointed in this product and it does not meet my expectations of being an easy to use, instant access to Internet. For my business needs, I still find my standard laptop too be much more productive & functional than the MS Surface Pro.

Great product very fast I got it home started to set it up and all of the sudden a prompt come up it sees my printer I just follow the wizard set up and bam I'm printing and scanning I have a Epson 545 workstation wireless printer if anyone would like to know. I continue the install and everything has worked fantastic. The type cover has been great and I highly recommend it. I love this thing and the more I use it the more I like it, it's solid. Then I started browsing and this thing is wicked fast full blown web pages in 1 to 2 seconds uploaded. If your used to a arm based tablet like the ipad you may find it frustrating after using this. get one of these I have the 128g version the speakers are weak though. I have a open mind about what this product offers so I wont downgrade it for battery life its on par with other computers in its class I know what this computer is and what it isn't

I recommend waiting a year for the kinks to be worked out. Files began disappearing, the screen was too small for good readability, the touch keypad stopped being recognized and stopped working, peripherals like a bluray player were difficult to set up. Because of its unreliability and break down, I had to return the Surface Pro.

    The future of portable computing

Don't let the chronic nay-sayers scare you away. This is an amazing device. It is bigger than it's little brother the Surface RT, but the thickness nor the weight are unacceptable. It is still much thinner than the other hybrid alternatives, and it's just about 2lbs. The battery has been a hot topic of discussion. Most of these sub 4 minute test results you are seeing are done with worst-case-scenario settings. The average person will get 4.5-6.5 hours of use depending on what's being done. Compared to toys like iPads and Galaxy tablets it isn't much, but this guy is a full fledged computer.

Very powerful tablet with full Windows 8 Pro. I use it as a tablet but I have an external monitor, bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse that I hook up when I am at my home office. Runs as fast and smoothly as any laptop. I feel like I have a desktop at home but can conveniently bring the tablet anywhere. Easily the most versatile computing device I have ever had. Watch Netflix with the same HDMI adapter on my regular 60 inch TV and it looks great. Now considering a Windows Phone for easy syncing. Expandable Micro SD slot is a huge plus and the USB provides several more options that other tablets do not have. Had it more than 3 months now and totally impressed.

This is an awesome system in tablet form. It works great and I'm very happy with the performance. The screen setting is set at ± 35%, my battery goes about 5.5 hours, and it's still quite bright inside and on a plane at 35,000'. The Touch keyboard works incredibly well, MS Office runs without a glitch, the handwriting interpretation is flawless and quite stunning, and the storage along with an SDXC card is roughly 150GB. The Metro #or whatever it's called now# interface is built for a tablet and works great. It sucks on a desktop, but works great on a tablet. I use PowerPoint as a Trainer and this tablet allows me to send my presentation to my projector via wireless router and maintain my presenters notes in front of me on the tablet. My paper is gone.

Surface Pro - Great Value - GREAT Work/Play Tablet

This is what I think a real tablet should be. I have owned Ipad and the II and honestly only used them for some email and light internet use. The Surface pro is an amazing device because of its lightweight form factor and the ability to run millions of computer software applications that I want to use. One thing I find to be an absolute genius tool is the multi-user environment. I mean 1 tablet and multiple people can have their own login, their own apps. Good luck trying that on any other tablet. The screen is beautiful and the performance puts an ipad to shame. Anyone looking for a no compromise solution that offers play/work combination look no further and get a surface.

    Perfect Tablet/PC

As a teacher/grad student, I need to have a portable computer that functions in both my everyday life, and in my studies/teaching. I now have everything I need with the Surface Pro. I have replaced my MacBook Pro (13 incher) and iPad (2nd Gen) with this one machine. After having to return my first one due to a defective battery (wouldn't stay on once unplugged#, I set up my Surface in about five minutes. Downloading apps was quick and easy, as was setting up all of my accounts. I use the computer from morning until night, and while I have to plug in the Surface occasionally, it still provides me with the portability essential for my position. I can connect it to a projector to show my students slide shows, or videos, and I can whip it out in a flash when I need to type up a quick document or send an email. The Type Keyboard is simply astounding. My only issue is the fact that the trackpad is a little small and sensitive. Then again, I can just use my fingers for anything I need to click! I also happen to be a gamer, and I play both Skyrim and a few MMOs on this #WoW, Lord of the Rings) with no problems. Yes, the fans kick in, but the graphics look phenomenal on this screen. I think anyone who is looking to replace their Laptops and tablets and are looking for portability will be very happy with this computer. The app list has some very nice apps, but then again, you have access to full webpages with Flash, so if there's not something you need in the Marketplace, it's not a big loss.

There has been so much negative press around the Surface, especially the RT. Made me nervous. But having the first generation iPad, it was time for an upgrade and the new iPad has not really changed a whole lot. Still operates the same way. No advancements in core functionality. Lighter and faster, but not much more. So the Surface pro (and the RT) provide so much more. Office is a big one. USB port, micro sd card & larger screen add a lot as well. And of course the touch covers - seems like something Apple would produce. Very innovative. Windows 8 on the Surface is so great. Offers way more than ios in ways to organize content. Lack of apps has not been an issue so far. Really happy with it. Read user reviews, they are mostly positive and matter most. The tech press just seems to love to hate Microsoft.

Currently a computer engineer at a university and this thing fulfills my needs perfectly. positives: -Can code C++, word process, play some KiD CuDi, and angry birds... ALL AT THE SAME TIME, ON A TABLET NO LESS. -portability, instead of lugging around 5 text books ranging between 2-3 lbs each, I only need to carry this thing around, a measly two pounds. negatives: -A slight learning curve but that's due to the unfamiliarity that comes with the introduction of windows 8. - the battery delves into the 4 hour mark when playing music videos, word processing, coding and such but that's to be expected when running multiple programs; otherwise I get an average of 5-6 hours at school with the help of the power saver power plan.

Windows 8 is a tablet OS so I was looking for a machine that would provide the maximum tablet experience and still allow me to run my existing Windows applications. The weight and size are good for a tablet, the Intel i5 core is more than enough horsepower for my Windows apps. I love that it has a USB and micro SD port. The stylus pen with Wacom drivers works great. I've had the unit almost 4 weeks now and I consistently get around 5 hours of battery lie no mater what I am doing. Obviously more would be better but I understand that for the low weight and i5 power this was about all I could expect. I have no complaints and no regrets on my purchase. Not only would I recommend this product, I already have to several of my friends.

Ditched my iPad for this magnificent machine!!

Let me just say I am an avid Apple fan, owning every Apple product from iMac, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, 1st through 3rd generation iPad and every iPhone to date and Apple TV from 1st generation. I though Apple could do no wrong and loved everything about their designs, their products and went all in with Mac, getting rid of my PCs. I though Microsoft was done and laughed when someone told me they bought a PC. Up until now, I have tried other tablets (Sony, Samsung) but they just never compared to iPad. However what iPad lacked was the functionality to transition to business. I do a lot of writing in my business and thought the iPad could assist being so portable but it never could. Microsoft has reinvented itself and launched full force into the tablet world with a magnificent machine capable of being both tablet and full fledged PC all in one incredible package. I sold my iPad 3 64GB since it was not only dusty and cobwebbed from not being used, but I was quite frankly bored with it. Apps, apps and more apps but the problem was, it lacked further functionality and productivity. Yes I could check my bank account and control my TV and go on the web browsing, but it got old and whatever dreams Apple had of inventing tablets and being the leader is slowly slipping away and I feel disappeared with Steve Jobs. Sure there was magic in the first iPad, but it is old and not even close to what Microsoft has created with this latest creation. Like you reading this now, I screened hundreds of reviews on the Surface, on every type of electronics website and found only a few negative reviews (Apple die hards). For the most part, all are positive and they are absolutely correct. This is a brilliant piece of technology, and Windows 8 does take getting used to but no different than when I had to get used to new Apple OS releases annually. Plus I plugged this tablet into a 23" monitor and it is like I have a full PC in a tiny package. It is fast, efficient and I can take care of business and still browse applications. Sure the Microsoft App store is nothing compared to iTunes, but this is how iTunes started and in time, there will be thousands of apps flooding this store. This is not a fluke and not a tablet that will quickly disappear. Microsoft has truly broke ground on what a tablet should be, an all in one Ultrabook in tablet form. Until Apple comes out with something even close to this, I am not going back to iPad. By the way, the guy that bought my iPad was buying it for his 7 year old so go figure what that technology has turned into.

    Customizable & Efficient

I use my Surface Pro for school, work, and entertainment and it has exceeded my expectations. This thing is optimized and fast! For school I primarily use the Type keyboard and Word for note taking, but I use the included stylus and OneNote for working out math problems and drawing sketches for my science classes. The pen works great, just like I was using pencil & paper. The tablet's compact size makes it easy to tote around and I haven't had any issues with the battery life. When using it for school purposes I can get ~6 hrs of collective use. Work requires me to access a lot of government-run websites and they usually require IE to run properly. IE 10 works great on the machine and Pro has no compatibility issues with the govt. sites (or any others so far). Unlike the iPad, I can digitally sign documents with a Common Access Card with no issues. The USB 3.0 helps out a lot. Windows 8 is intuitive on the Surface Pro and when you need desktop-functionality you can swap over to the traditional view and hook up and external monitor. Also, you can pretty much set up the new Start menu any way you like, or bypass it completely and stay with the traditional Desktop view. Personally, I like the new Start screen. For entertainment I watch Netflix, YouTube, etc. and never have any crashes. I was really pleased to find out that the integrated graphics card can actually handle real games, not just apps. I play League of Legends on high settings without issues and Skyrim is playable on low settings without any major glitches. Games like Black Ops are good to go but the more graphics-demanding games like Far Cry 3 aren't playable. I have no problems pushing out 1080p to a 50" TV when gaming or watching videos using the mDA. The only downside I've found is that a lot of the games I play on my phone can't be played on this machine. If you MUST have apps like DrawSomething, Bike Race and Scramble then you might be better off with a iPad Mini or something. It does have Angry Birds though. If you're just looking for functional apps for Facebook, Skype, photo editing, music, news and the like then you'll be fine. Simply put, the Surface Pro is near-perfect for me.
