Yes you can remap those buttons to any other but the controller will not save it unless you reconfigure a and b to the directonal pad.

I had a little trouble connecting to my low-end computer/media device in combination with the wireless receiver, but it worked in the end - meanwhile, my new bluetooth-enabled computer picked it up with no problem at all.
