Amazing tablet! Easy and fun to use

I initially planned on holding out for a Surface Pro, but after seeing a friend's Surface RT, I was sold. The built-in 32GB was enough storage to start with, since so much of the content consumed is streamed. I later purchased a 64GB microSD card for under $100, giving me close to 100GB of storage space, if I end up needing it. The screen is bright, clear and amazing and I love having the widescreen aspect ratio. Turned on it's side, it's perfect for navigating vertically oriented pages (tumblr# or reading articles more like a newspaper. I've read people complaining that it's awkward in this position, but they must just be too used to the iPad because it's not awkward at all, in my opinion. Anyone who says the kickstand and keyboard #touch cover# need to be used on a table have obviously never tried it. I constantly use it in my lap, on the bed, on the couch, on the floor, etc. The kickstand, while not adjustable, is at the optimal angle for most people in most situations and is very sturdy. It's almost impossible to knock this thing over. This thing if built solid. Embarrassingly, I've dropped it already, but it survived completely unscathed without even so much as a scratch. The other RT devices I've checked out #Acer, for one) all felt kind of cheap and seemed a but glitchy, unlike the Surface. The Surface is solid, fast and extremely responsive. The app ecosystem continues to grow and there isn't anything I need or want to do with my surface that I can't already do. Remote desktop is fantastic! It's an amazing #and addictive) piece of hardware with an awesomely intuitive OS. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

    Work and Play

Having owned the Microsoft Surface since Black Friday I am mystified by all of the negative reviews by the Tech Media around the Net. It’s as if they are reviewing a completely different product than the one I have been using. Perhaps my expectations for a $499 full feature tablet were set much lower than these reviewer or their expectations were set too high. I just say that I have been very pleased with this tablet. I use it as a companion to my laptop which has seen much less action since I bought this. As a productivity tablet I would rate the Surface a 9.5 out of 10 where the iPad ranks 7 out of 10. As an online student I used to use my iPad 2 to write papers in Pages, email it to myself, open it in Word on my laptop to properly format it and then post it to the school’s website. With the Surface Word is included as a part of Office 2013 and I am able to complete the entire process on the Surface. This is the primary reason I made the conversion to the Surface from the iPad 2. Since I mostly bought productivity apps for my iPad 2 I don’t miss it much. As a leisure tablet the Surface ranks a 7 out of 10 where the iPad ranks a 9.5 out of 10. Although the iPad is a fun tablet the Surface is no prude. There are some cool games like Angry Birds Star Wars, Cut the Rope, and a number of role playing games that shine on the platform. The Modern (Metro) UI with its active tiles, make social networking updates a breeze and pleasing to look at. Reading comics using the ComiXology app is as compelling as on the Surface as with any other OS. My only complaint it that the Music app is poorly executed when compared to the iPad or Windows Phone 7.5. Its dependence on Xbox music syncing and the limited integration of files on SD cards, thumb drives and hard drives makes playing music unnecessarily difficult. This MUST be fixed SOON. Overall this is a great first effort by Microsoft to make a tablet that is ideal for work or play. Of course there is room for improvement. Be warned… Before taking a negative review of this tablet at face value check it out for yourself. You may find that the market is large enough for more than one great tablet.

    Overall Great Tablet

I was torn between whether I would invest in an iPad or the Surface RT as a tablet for college, and with my choice of the Surface, I was not disappointed with my purchase. Though it seems like a trivial feature, the kickstand is a PHENOMENAL feature, proving its usefulness everyday. The tablet is solidly built, and the full size USB port, micro sd card slot, mini HDMI out port, and keyboard port all contribute to an extremely versatile tablet, much more than anything else on the market. Though the display might not be as high resolution as some of its competitors, but it has a nice level of brightness and vivid colors. Though the app selection is not to par with iOS and Android, i find enough apps to fit my needs. Overall, the Surface is a great tablet for anybody to use, and especially with the $350 price, you won't feel any regrets.

Great Tablet computer for every day things

Great for surfacing the web, and doing homework on. Runs emulators for games, and you can use a wired xbox360 controller to play games on it. You can expand the storage space with a micro sd card or usb harddrive. The surface is very slick looking and has a sharp picture, screen quality is very good. The app market is kind of lacking but what do I care, it runs emulators that's good enough for me. The surface RT is nothing like the Surface pro if you are in the market for the must capable Tablet then the surface pro is your tablet it runs a X64-86 processor(intels i5) and can run any program that's made then that's the tablet for you but if you are looking for a tablets for minor things then the surface rt is for you. If you plan on buying a Ipad for 599 I suggest spend an extra 100$ and get a surface pro. If your deciding between cheaper tablets then the surface RT beats everything in that market.

I was hesitant to get this tablet due to some negative reviews on here but I'm glad I went with my gut and got it. Its a great tablet for a great price! I work and go to school full time so its really hard to find time in the day to get my work done. This tablet has allowed me to completely eliminate carrying my laptop with me everywhere since it has word, excel, and powerpoint already installed. the app selection is no comparison to google play or the app store, but if ypur looking for a tablet to get your work done this is definitely it!

This is by far the bet tablet I have used. I find myself relying less on my laptop and more on the Surface. Getting almost 10 hours of heavy use out of this thing (turn off the Bluetooth to save battery life if your not using it) is really remarkable! It includes Office 2013 so you have the best productivity apps built-in. You can add on of the awesome keyboard covers, a Bluetooth device, or simply plugin a full size keyboard into the USB port! Surfing the internet is fast and everything else has been a pleasure to use! Highly recommend!

Great tablet for business, pleasure and travel. USB port is very useful and the fact that it comes with Microsft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote already install it makes it a great deal. I just wish there were more apps available.

    The next "it" thing

I was neutral to the whole Windows 8 thing and thought of the surface as a weird niche device. My wife is a home user and her old laptop was bogging down. She ONLY used it for facebook, email, watching netflix, etc. I first got her a galaxy tab. Not quite there. I liked it way better than she did. Then an ipad 2. She liked it but still felt like a five hundred dollar glass toy that was just an oversized ipod touch. On a whim, she decided to try a Surface RT. Happy wife = happy life. We got it and she absolutely adores it. It's everything she used her ipad for, plus doing some actual work and communicating. The tappy keyboard thing is ideal. Plugging in a mouse, keyboard, or hard drive is a breathtaking advancement for tablets. I honestly have real trouble calling this a "tablet." It's something new. A great friend of mine just bought a Surface Pro, and said it replaced 3 devices: his macbook pro, ipad, and asus win7 laptop. I am absolutely getting a surface pro asap.

    GREAT FOR STUDENTS

I just bought this for school because I am a college student. I usually carry around my bulky laptop along with my books and school materials. This is a great alternative to carrying all of that. IT COMES WITH MICROSOFT WORK, POWERPOINT, EXCEL etc. That is the best thing. I can also use usb's on it and I added a 64gb sd card to expand memory. Great. Only reason why I give it 4 stars is because I wish i was able to install other programs onto it, but thats only on the Surface Pro version ($400+).

Not quite ready for prime time

This is a good tablet and a great example of Windows 8's potential. Unfortunately, right now potential is all it has. The Windows App Store, while it advertises 100,000 apps, is very sparse. Multiple versions of virtually the same app do not constitute multiple apps. Additionally, when I purchased the Surface, the Microsoft rep made 2 promises: 1) the tablet will update to the full Office suite and 2) Citrix has an app designed to work with Windows RT. Neither were completely true, as the Office suite update is an "optional update" that you have to know to look for. Additionally, the Citrix app is not fully functional with all types of remote desktop formats. Additionally, the tablet would randomly disconnect from WiFi, was very sluggish in some apps, and would often have difficulty connecting to the Microsoft Store. While this is a good tablet, and perhaps in the future could be used as a laptop replacement, it is not quite there yet, With more apps, the full Office suite (which is apparently available if you look hard enough), and fully integrated business features, there is potential in this tablet. Just don't buy it if you are expecting it to meet all of those needs right now.

I had low expectation for Surface. But after using it for few weeks, it actually is better than I thought. The build quality is better than most Android tablets. Internet Explorer is the only web browser available on Surface - it actually feels more stable than Chrome or Dolphin browser on Android. Lack of apps does hurt, but it's good enough for browsing web and Office work. Skype is horrible experience on Surface though. It forces you to sync with a MS email account. Takes forever to start the app when answering a call. Speakers are surprisingly loud. Screen is pretty sharp and has good viewing angle. Good buy if you can get it around the $200 range.

The Microsoft Surface RT is the perfect combination of form and function. It offers the Microsoft ecosystem (Office, Skype, SkyDrive, Messenger) in one convenient, efficient, elegant package. It was easy to setup, intuitive to use, and offers many functions for the price. A wonderful alternative to the iPad and Android powered tablets. The addition of the keyboard and kick-stand make this a perfect companion to any computer user's portfolio. Would recommend it to everyone!

    Best Windows 8 tablet around.

First off, I love this tablet!!! I purchased it on Black Friday 2013 for the awesome price of $199. Once I updated the OS to 8.1 it gave me Outlook for free. That version of Office is $219, so they really paid me to take the tablet. I use the tablet for college. I have a laptop but dont like to take it to class with me. I use this as a go between and even typed my final research paper on it. With the USB port I just transfer the data over to my laptop using a flash drive I picked up for $8. I say its perfect for any college student. Some bad things are, Windows RT OS does limit the apps you can get. You have to download all your apps from the windows store. The major thing people hate is that you can't go to a website and download an app like iTunes. But I have noticed that the app store is getting better. If you have an Xbox One you will love this tablet. Using Xbox SmartGlass you will have a second screen for some of the games that you play. Battlefield 4, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse are just a few.

Everything about this item works excellent very responsive screen. Battery last for along time. only things that could be better is the camera could be more powerful and playing some games like candy crush it seems to lack the power very slow on loading. But I would still prefer my surface over a Samsung or a apple product!

A nice one to carry around

well. I have a mac pro for my primary work purpose and decided to get one that would be easy to carry around when I travel or commute to office. This surely is a nice choice if you prefer some products that are easy to carry around while in the meantime can do some real work - I mean writing reports, office stuffs, etc. It indeed takes some time to get familiar with the interface, design, and sometimes would be quite frustrating to navigate through it to find the features or functions you want, but in some way it is very self-evident and once you get a hand on it, you would like it very much. I gotta say I didn't get this for all those apps, like games etc, but mainly for easy commmute and work purpose. So for professionals using this for business and work, and also trying to find one that works well, this could be considered.

I have has my Surface RT for several months now and can honestly say I'm in love. I had an iPad 2 for several years and after the "honeymoon" found it so limiting that I sold it for this. I love the fact that you have a USB slot & memory card (I added one and store all my extra's on it). It can easily switch from traditional desktop to live tiles, and a swipe from the left brings you back to your previous pages. For a PC user it feels like home-you can navigate the hard drive & perform many maintenance tasks. The sky drive is great. I have a Windows 8 phone and they work seamlessly with calendar, photos, office files etc... I also use the keyboard cover (which I thought I would get just for screen protection) and it is easy to use. Love the kickstand. I've watched Netflix on it and you get the true wide screen ratio. Took it on vacation and was able to load all my traditional camera photos as we traveled due to the USB slot. I recommend watching the free tutorials to best appreciate all the features (I'm learning more each time) Best tablet ever!!!

    Awesome tablet

This tablet really gets a bad rap for nothing. It really is better than an ipad with what you get hardware wise and being able to use sd card and hook it up top your tv. The face that it can go into somewhat of a laptop is awesome. Its better than a lot of android tablets with how the OS is setup and for the money since they dropped the price you can't beat it. The biggest downside to this tablet is the apps they are just not there yet. Windows RT is fine if you understand why Microsoft did that. Just know what you getting before you buy it. You can watch movies take pics Skype all that cool stuff and yes you can get your gmail though the mail app. It does not have chrome but that's more Google than Microsoft. So if your a first time tablet user or just want something that's a really awesome deal this is it. Just hang in there the apps will come
