Great for Digital Design/Art...Gadget for Others

Purchased the Microsoft Surface Dial (MSD) just to see how it would work with my 2015 Surface Book (SB). A BB bundled deal with two (2) minor accessories reduced the $99 asking price by 25%. Sweet! At this point (at least for the SB) the MSD is more of a gadget, albeit a very nice one. It's solidly built, well weighted and stable on a desk, feels good in the hand and very fluid in operation. The major features for the SB as I see them are Volume, Zoom and Scroll (more on scrolling later). The Undo and Ink show promise and can be used inside of Microsoft PPT and Publisher. Hopefully, future updates will bring more capabilities and the option to place the MSD on the SB screen as can be done with the new Studio. About scrolling...the MSD is very accurate allowing for precise adjustment. I compared the MSD scrolling capabilities to my Logitech MX Master mouse which is very precise for scrolling as well. The MSD is better. I see the advantage the MSD may provide when used for precise adjustments in combination with the Surface Pen for spot-on positioning in the design and graphic arts realms. I'll probably keep the MSD as I'm curious as to how far it will advance for use as a tool in Windows 10 outside of design/graphic arts. Also, it gives me something to occupy my left hand. LOL.

    Great Build Quality, Lacks Support

Overall the Dial works and feels great. It is a pretty hefty metal puck with a semi grippy material on the bottom. It can be used on the screen (On Studio) or off the screen (normal Bluetooth) and can be programmed to a degree to do certain keyboard inputs when you twist it. My biggest issue with it is that it lacks a lot of meaningful support from the Adobe CC collection so if you use those programs you don't really need this item. Another kind of bummer is that even with the Studio screen in full draft position the puck will still slowly slide down the screen so you definitely have to keep a hand on the puck if you put it on the screen. On the plus side I was able to program it to give me 100,000 Simoleons in Sim City every tick when I turned it so that was entertaining. Really well built item that lacks support from Adobe (there is some official support but just not a lot) so it is hard to justify the high price for ultimately a volume knob unless you use the art programs provided with the Surface Studio.

    Innovative but needs some work...

The Microsoft Surface Dial is a pretty innovative product, and since its release, more programs are adopting it for at least primitive use with their applications. However, it's not perfect. I dropped it one star because when the Surface Dial is used with the Microsoft Surface Studio, arguably the product it was made for, it slides when placed at even the lowest angle for the Surface Studio. For an artist, this requires me to either continue to hold it in place (distracting me) or continue to take it off and on the Studio screen surface (still a distraction). The second issue is the bottom of the surface is made with a material to prevent it from sliding. The material isn't sticky and doesn't leave a residue, but it does pick up dust and dirt. Any dust and dirt. And if it becomes dirty, the Surface Dial will slide faster when not being held. Also, if it becomes too dirty, it may not register with the screen. This dropped it an additional star. I'm glad that Microsoft is coming up with innovative products again and giving other companies a run for their money. Overall, I would recommend this product; I hope they take the feedback they've received into consideration and iteration #2 of this product corrects some of the deficiencies!

    Specialized use cases

It is a great, well built device, with some unique use cases. Not sure the average person would need one. You can use it to scroll, or zoom in many programs, which is just as easy and more familiar using a mouse and touch pad. Other applications, largely graphics/photo oriented allow you to select many things that can be varied, such as color, line width, saturation, etc., either independently or while you are using the mouse or pen. This creates some interesting new capabilities for artists (I'm not one of those). It does require some learning, as do most professional tools. It will work 'on screen' with the new surfaces, but it takes up a bit of real estate using it that way. Works fine from off screen as well. Really suited for on-screen on the Surface Studio, but considering what those cost, picking up a dial would be trivial and a no-brainer. The one star off is just because this is such a niche device, it has limited utility for most. If you need one this is a 5 star unit.

The Surface Dial is definitely a powerful tool for artists to stay in the flow. We're glad you mentioned that! In addition to being useful fort art, we have many other apps that the Surface Dial is designed to work with. So the Surface Dial is an interesting device. It essentially gives you a "speed menu" with rotary selection and press activation. With a large screen like the Surface studio, you can set it on the screen, press, and the menu appears right under it (very cool). Windows 10 gives you some basic functionality in the OS itself, but is up to applications to add contextual options for the dial (to date that seems limited-- though apps like Spotify have some. Could I live without it? Probably-- but it's really designed for the Studio and if you're going to spend that much on a computer, you might as well go all the way (like buying a Ferrari but opting out on leather to save pocket change). My only complaint about the device is sometimes it goes to sleep and you have to LONG press to wake it back up (it's bluetooth and turns off to save battery).

Although it does not currently work on-screen for the Surface or Surface Book; it is very powerful off screen. I am a developer and was able to write functionality for this in my apps and inject functionality for this into other apps. It is fairly simple, the number of clicks can be adjusted by a developer (resolution) and it provides feedback through a haptic motor. The response time is impressive. I wish MS would allow users to add multiple custom tools, because then other people could map it to key strokes in their applications - this would open it up to more than just developers. Where Apple once used to release cool add-ons for their valuable hardware, it is now Microsoft who is stepping up to the plate -- and knocking it out of the park.

So the dial is a great concept in my opinion. I like the way it works and love that I don't have to remember what a bunch of buttons were set to like the Wacom remote. That said it has only been available for a short period and has very limited software support. It is the lack of software support I am giving it only 3 stars. If Microsoft can work with creative software companies to get more support I will update this review. I do believe the support will grow when the creators update comes out is the spring. I would recommend this but would say you may be waiting a bit for this to really reach it's potential.

Over all happy with how it performs with Adobe Lightroom. I have used it a little with Photoshop pleased but I need more time setting up. I am not using it on the screen for any of that color picking functionality. I am not good with hot keys so I use the dial in my left hand and the mouse in my right and I can do a lot of basic functions in light room. it feels well built and I like the slight feedback it gives you. If you are not a great keyboardist it is a nice addition. I did not test against other products and I took one star off for price even with a 15% discount.

There was so much hype and so many opinions going in both directions for the Surface Studio and all the things you can do with it. Then it finally comes and my daughter and I were nervous about opening it. The surface dial - takes some adjusting to use. She's 11 and is loving it. She won't let anyone use hers and I won't let anyone use mine. We ended up buying a second one - so we could use them at the same time . Amazing product- take time to adjust to using it. Watch YouTube or join a few groups. Learning curve even for the most advanced computer tech savvy people. Enjoy

The Surface dial is a great product. I have a HP Spectre 360x and it works fine with compatible programs. It is very good with Sketchable. The dial itself is well constructed and has a good feel in the hand. With the size screen that I have (15") I don't use the dial on the screen but it works fine from my desk. Pairing via Bluetooth was a snap. If you do a lot of graphic drawing or editing I would recommend the Surface Dial.

This is a surprisingly handy little device. For only having three basic controls (left, right, press) it gives a lot of potential for your workflow. At the time of this review, native app support is very skeletal, as developers work in functionality for it. Photoshop seems to be the main go-to. But it makes a great shuttle control for video editing, and if I'm seated at the desk, I was surprised at how much I used it to scroll web pages versus using the mouse or dragging my finger on the touch screen.

The Dial is a nice piece of hardware. It has a very solid feel, and the turning mechanism is very smooth. It is a fairly new device, so there is not a lot of functionality outside of Microsoft programs. I have found that it is easy to take out when web browsing to scroll up and down. Much better that using arrow keys or trackpad. I think as it becomes a more known device, software companies will begin including it's use in their programs.

When I first got the dial, I have to say that I wasn't sure if there were any benefits to it. Once I learned to customize it towards Lightroom and Photoshop, I quickly changed my mind. This helps speed up my workflow tons, especially when I have the Surface Studio in draft mode. It's pretty fast, although at times there can be a slight delay in Lightroom when scrolling between thumbnails. This and needing more advanced customization are my only complains so far.

I purchased the Microsoft Dial almost immediately after I saw the Microsoft Keynote and showed the Surface Studio and Dial. The dial in my opinion has a lot of potential. Now that the Surface Studio has been released I hope that other companies start to do more developing. I really like my dial, although I would tell anyone to wait a little longer and wait until there are more developers adding to the product.

New twist in the world of man machine interfacing! Not a lot of apps making real use of the device yet, but for the ones that do it's able to provide both new abilities that weren't there before (like changing pen color while you're drawing), as well as simply a new way to do standard things (like scrolling or changing the volume). As a developer I'm excited to add dial support to my apps, hopefully as a way to stand out from other similar apps.

I review engineering prints almost everyday in my job. I would love a surface AIO but I only have the surface book. But I still love this device. I use it constantly to change weights of the ink, zoom, and scroll constantly. If you mark up pdfs I can definitely recommend this.. But I don't know about artists or anything like that because I am the farthest thing from that.

It's a great tool, but on a 15-inch screen it does not work for me. Look for everything to use it, but I could not adapt. When I have my Surface Studio, it will be a purchase. Right now, with the pencil is enough. Many accessories overwhelm me. Mouse, pencil, Dial, touch screen, trackpad mm, it's too much. For me it was not useful.

To get the full benefit with on-screen display you need the Surface Studio. However all of the same features still work off-screen for the Surface Pro and Surface Book In addition the dial will work for any laptop via Bluetooth. This dial is convenient for scrolling and zooming as well as for ink replay. If any of these options are of use to you it's worth it. I am sure more options will be added.

Bought my Surface Book at Best Buy! The best ever! I purchased the Surface Dial to use for certain programs. Right now it is limited. I wanted to use with Flight Simulator programs. The dial only worked for volume. I tried to customize keys. It did not work. I did return it. If you are an artist, work with floor plans business or art projects, it is a wonderful tool.
