Okay phone but extremely bad service! Do not buy!

It is time to report my poor experience with this expensive device and say farewell to Microsoft hardware. I bought the 256GB Surface DUO 2 at Bestbuy on 1/14/2022. I spent almost $2,000 on the phone, pen, bumper and magnetic cover. I do not want to talk about the buggy software. Others have covered related issues a lot. Anyway, it improves through time. I do not have a lot of complaints about it since it is expected. My review is based on an issue that is not covered by others and the worst service that I have experienced. An issue I experienced that happened occasionally was that the device might sound “ding dong” like the charging cable is plugged in and then plugged out but I actually did nothing. The problem has happened quite a few times but after a certain period of time, it would disappear. I don't know how the problem is caused and fixed. At least, updating software and reboot do not help. The focus of this review is on the hardware quality and service. I used a bumper, a magnetic cover, and skin to protect the expensive phone. However, the lower right piece popped up slightly. It seemed due to the glue failure. It was not too bad. I believe it should be covered under warranty. After submitting a request online, I got an email about the repair process. I packaged it carefully and sent it to the service center in El Paso, TX. After a few days, I received an email saying that it was damaged and was not covered by warranty. I was surprised that they classified the problem as my fault. The service center sent it back to me without repair. After receiving it, I found that the lower left piece of the phone disappeared. Obviously, the guy who checked it broke the piece, discarded it, and said I broke it. It is totally unacceptable! I swear that it was not that bad when I shipped it out. It is unbelievable that the service was so bad. I do not know how to contact Microsoft to fix the problem. Also, I hate to be put on hold for hours and argue for something that was not my fault. Thus, I bought a Samsung S22 Ultra at Bestbuy to replace it. This was my worst $2,000 investment. If you consider buying a Surface DUO 2 or other phones from Microsoft, think about it twice, especially the unbelievable service that you might have to go through.

Drastic improvement from the first generation.

Okay so I have had the Duo 2 for about a week now. Comparing the device to the previous generation (which I also owned) it is a dramatic improvement. With that said, I didn’t care that the first generation didn’t have a “triple” camera setup on the back of the device, I don’t use it for pictures. The software is dramatically better than the previous generation. Now I will say I wish the device had 12gb of Ram but I haven’t had many issues with lagging or freezing. The software has “freaked out” a couple of times but not to the point that it has prevented me from being productive. A lot of over reviewers will say that “it’s a terrible device and Microsoft still hasn’t perfected the device”. I agree but if you are using it as it was intended, it works fantastically. To sum it all up, I love the device and I think Microsoft is on the right track and I hope future software updates will fix the few minor issues I do have with it.

If you want a tablet experience go get a fold. This is a dual screen device, not a foldable tablet. If you want an actual dual screen, multitasking beast, then this is as good as it gets for now. The software is still kinda buggy but its a big improvement over last years duo and it's finally a device that I don't mind recommending to people. I absolutely love the form factor and the wider screens are so much nicer to read and browse on than a normal phones screen width. I do hate the camera bump though and I think it ruins an otherwise fantastic design but I get why they did it. Hopefully in the future we can get like an optional "business edition" with no camera bump.

Before I bought it, I actually had to convince myself. It wasn't a cheap device, and despite everyone agreeing that the second generation was a huge improvement over the previous one, there were still many reviews that didn't rate the Duo 2 highly. After actually getting it in my hands, I found it to be better than I expected. If you like reading novels and comics, multitasking, and playing xbox cloud games, then the duo 2 beats not only traditional candybar phones, but also all the folding screen phones currently on the market. It had already gotten a couple of big updates from Microsoft when I purchased it, so there weren't many bugs that I felt. I can feel that Microsoft is confident in this device, and so am I now.

    Mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings about this phone. It has some really cool features, but it can be awkward to use. If you tend to sit down and use both hands for your phone, this can be a really nice device. I love being able to use two apps side-by-side. However, if you are trying to do something else, and need to pop out your phone to check a notification or something, this phone is awful. You have to open it in order to read any notifications, and it is near impossible to do one-handed. I've almost thrown the phone by accident trying to open it. Also, the software can be a little buggy. You never really know which screen something is going to open up on, and it is difficult to swipe an app away. I really thought I'd like the unique form-factor, but for me, it is a hard pass. I have since returned the phone to the store.

This is a great product for me! I am basically using it as a lap top. I was shocked when i tried to connect it to a monitor and it work! I also connected a mouse. Great for travel, great for use on plane with duel screen. Apps work great in single and duel screen.I haven't used it as a phone yet. Thats not why I bought it. I am using it on wifi for accessing cloud based programs and it works great for me! Fits fine in my pocket and so far the battery life has been great. I ran out and bought one for one of my sales team members so he can demo his products. Exceeded my expectations!!!!

This device is amazing, but i am comparing it to the surface duo 1 that came out previously. This is a much needed improvement, but it does have a couple of quirks thats a little weird but not a big deal to me. One of those is the camera bump prevents the phone from opening all the way when you wrap the screen around. Then there is still some slowness in the phone, but it's really not bad.. Keeping in mind, I had the first surface duo which is why i am still so excited for this version. Another thing I can say is that it's not dropping calls either like the first version. I have this device on T-Mobile. All I did was take the sim card out of my other device, popped it in here, and boom! I'm online with the surface duo 2. The bluetooth doesn't seem to be very strong. So if I have the device in my pocket and my google pixel buds in my ears, they cut out, but as long as i don't have the phone in my pocket the bluetooth works with no problems. All that being said, again, i'm happy with this device. Two screens, more apps working with no problems.. Could it have a few more features for the price? Sure, but for what I use it for, as a power user, it's perfect for me!

First thing I have to say is, this device is not for everyone... If you are interested in the form factor and liked the Surface Duo v1 then this is a GREAT device. Most of the major issues/compromises from the v1 are addressed with the Surface Duo 2. The device is very snappy and the build quality is vastly improved from Surface Duo v1. There are times that the software bugs out but none are deal breakers as those can be patched up. Im giving the device 4 out of 5 just because of the (very) minor software issues that I've encountered and shouldn't even be present in this $1500 device. Overall, if you are in the market for a new phone and like the idea of a foldable device then this is is a very good option to consider!

It's interesting device, but probably for a specific crowd. Much better than first Duo, in terms of overall quality and performance, but still relatively specific use cases in terms of multitasking. If you are doing a lot of Microsoft Office tasks - you will find it helpful, but size-wise it may take some time to adjust. Also awesome to read books on this device

my surface duo 2 has been plagued with issues - currently one month after one year warranty the left screen is totally blank. quick google search shows this as very common issue. the screen works i can flip things to it but it's blank. the top molding has come off, just a very unrefined buggy device. the camera is total garbage. I've missed shots as it's takes so long to clip to the camera you wants. I regret spending so much money on this. I asked Microsoft to consider warranty repair as this is clearly software related and they said sure $700. i will never purchase another microsoft laptop or phone

I'm a phone enthusiast who uses iPhones, premium Samsung phones, and Google Pixel devices. I have to say that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2's build is as premium as they come. I can't explain how good it feels in the hands. The hinge is buttery smooth. I have had the Duo 1, and I will say that Duo 2's software is a step in the right direction. The latest December 2021 update fixes 98% of software issues that I have ever had with the first Duo. Do not listen to the famous Youtubers as they previewed the device before the update. Coming from an iPhone will be a learning curb especially if you haven't used an Android device in a while. Give the Duo 2 a real try before you write it off. I am a businessperson in the corporate world and this device has improved my productivity. This is not a Samsung Fold! Duo 2 is not to be used the same way! Microsoft's intention was for you to not span video across both screens but to use both screens separately like you would do your laptop and monitor display. This phone can be your daily driver or used as a secondary device for work and productivity. The build quality is so good that you might just want to use it every day as the daily driver!

Wow, what a difference one update can make. I moved from the iPhone 13 Pro Max about a month ago and liked the Duo 2 but struggled because of the bugs. I was about to switch back when the latest update dropped and totally surprised me with the amount of progress they made. Usage: MS Outlook/Excel 50% Internet/social media 20% Movies/Tv (Plex) 15% Life apps (Banking/Shopping etc..) 10% Games 5% I can never see myself returning to a single screen device again. I can also never see me using a "Fold" type either. I'd just use a small tablet. I did add the cover and pen shortly after purchasing. Basically, like the Note 20 Ultra, I owned a while back. I wish MS would include it in the box. A couple of cons are: No sdcard expansion. Odd since most Androids have these. I have a 2TB OneDrive but would still prefer the option. Being a dual-screen device the time it takes to pull the phone out to take a picture or even open a simple app can be frustrating. Apple Messenger and Facetime are infinitely better than anything offered on Google. How Google hasn't resolved this baffles me. The Facebook messenger set as the default messenger app is the best solution I've found so far. Setting up the phone to your liking takes time. Lots of time. I enjoy it but not everyone will. The battery can last a full day, barely. 6:30am - 11:00pm. Lastly, as mentioned before, the pen is extra and a must for people who heavily use OneNote.

The Microsoft Duo 2 is excellent. It has froze a few times but Microsoft is doing updates already and working the bugs out. I do wish it was a Windows 11 phone because I am used to Windows phones. But you can get it setup like Windows. The clarity even in bright sun is excellent and the idea that it is basically two phones or one is very good and saves time. I love it and will stick with Microsoft. They are so much advanced then Android or Apple. They were just very late coming out with their phones that everyone got use to the others. Hopefully they think ahead and can get to be the top of the game in cell phones in the future.

This phone so far has exceeded my expectations. I will have to take some time in the future to create a full review because there is a lot to mention. I listed some below: 1. Excellent build quality 2. Excellent user experience 3. Great camera 4. The dual screens work well together If you are thinking about getting this phone at least try it out. I switched from an iPhone 11 and it did take me some time to set up all 36 of my apps. But after that, the phone has been working really well.
