Sleek, Fast, and Great for Everyday Use

Setup was quick and straightforward, and it runs smoothly right out of the box. The screen is bright and sharp, making it comfortable to use for work, streaming, and browsing for long periods. Performance has been fast and responsive for everyday tasks like multitasking, video calls, and productivity apps. Battery life easily lasts through most of the day with regular use, which is a big plus when working on the go. The design is slim and lightweight but still feels solid and well-built. Keyboard and trackpad are comfortable, and overall the laptop feels reliable and polished. Great value for the price and a solid choice for anyone needing a dependable Windows laptop.

Great promise, not yet a reality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With this CoPilot+ PC, am excited to see a powerful laptop with a great battery life and competent performance. I have been optimistic about what has been in the works with AI as these technologies improve, but I’m also suspicious of claims about what AI can actually do. I’m also sensitive to privacy concerns when it comes to sharing personal data. This new chip architecture is supposed to enable on-chip AI, without the need for powerful cloud-based algorithms processing your personal data: Satya Nadella said in an interview, “It’s all being done locally, and that’s the promise.” If that’s the promise, Microsoft has not yet delivered. Hardware: 4/5 Performance: 5/5 CoPilot+ features: 2/5 “It’s all being done locally”: 0/5 Out of the box, this looks like a very nice compact laptop. It’s a lovely shade of blue. It seems like a solid piece of hardware, both elegant and capable. But, like other Surface devices before it, it seems to be unsure of what, exactly, it is. It looks like a compact laptop, and I’m inclined to use the attached keyboard/trackpad as I would any other laptop, and I forget about the touchscreen. But then when I remember the touchscreen (which is really nice), I wonder why there’s a keyboard and trackpad getting in the way, and I wish the screen were better supported so it doesn’t bounce around on its hinge when I touch it. Additionally, it’s lighter than the largest laptops, but at nearly 3 pounds it’s heavier than many other Surface devices. It’s also heavier than my MacBook Air. Here are some random pros and cons with the hardware design: + Seems sturdy overall + Three USB ports give decent flexibility - The touchscreen is awkward to use when the hinge flexes under slight pressure. I feel like I want to hold it with my other hand, which is also awkward. - Trackpad clicking is an interesting combination of mechanical movement and haptic feedback. Usually it feels great but sometimes it won’t register a click unless I take my finger off it entirely and start over. + Battery life is great; a full day’s work on a single charge, depending on what you’re doing. - Comes with a 40w charger with a proprietary magnetic connector. But + it will receive a charge from a standard USB-C charger. + The Snapdragon processor can do heavy lifting without breaking a sweat. Even after a 90 minute Zoom meeting, the device was barely warm to the touch. + It also does a perfectly capable job with video-intensive applications and games. One of the big selling points of this device is the neural processing capabilities of these new Snapdragon chips. I think a lot of the value here will come from third-party software that can take advantage of this. Microsoft mentioned, for example, Adobe suite software that will do complex image manipulation using the Snapdragon’s NPU. Out of the box, though, Microsoft offers us CoPilot+, a set of tools integrated into Windows that claim to offer new functionality that is only possible with the on-chip processing power of these CoPilot+ PCs. I tried a few of these functions to see how well they work. Live Caption translations in real time: This feature is the one that impressed me the most from the new CoPilot+ offerings, in terms of potential utility. When I turned on Live Captions, I got a message saying “Getting ready to show live captions translated into English…” with no indication of what it was doing or how long it would take. I assume it was downloading language-specific translation models, so I came back 10 minutes later. The message hadn’t changed. I waited another 30 minutes, and then finally it started doing stuff. In fact, before I even realized what was happeneing, it started giving me live captions of a YouTube video I was watching. I was also able to have it listen to the device’s microphone, and it started captioning my voice and other voices in the room. I tried speaking the few words of French and/or Spanish that I know, and even with my terrible accent it generally figured out what I was trying to say and dutifully translated (almost) everything to English. I played some other videos, and it would get a little confused with background music, but for the most part it did a pretty passable job. I could definitely see using this for taking written notes during a meeting (edit: actually nope; there’s apparently no way to save the text as a transcript) or for conversing in real time with someone who is speaking a language I’m not familiar with. And, importantly, all the processing appears to occur on-device, so I don’t need an Internet connection and I don’t need to worry about privacy issues when I’m using this feature. Windows Studio Effects: These are a set of adjustments that can be made to the front-facing camera. Effects include blurring the background, adjusting light levels, apply a creative filter to make your image look cartoony, and adjust your eyes to make it appear like you’re looking at the camera when you’re looking at the screen. I’ve seen that some people often use the blur background option that has been built into Zoom for years, so this option could be useful sometimes. It’s a more refined, more accurate version of the feature I’ve seen before. The eye contact option seemed intriguing, but the only change I noticed is that it makes my eyes look unusually large. The other effects seem like fun party tricks, but I don’t think I’d ever have a use for them in a work setting. Image and text generation with Cocreator in near real-time: A new button in Microsoft Paint offers a feature that has made for some very impressive demos that I’ve seen on the web. But when I tried it, I was not impressed. Maybe I wasn’t holding it right, I don’t know, but it uses some generative AI to generate an image based on a drawing and a text description I provide. I tried 3 or 4 different creative ideas, but despite various attempts over half an hour or so I couldn’t get any usable output. Most often the algorithm would fail to get any hints of my intent from either my prompt or my drawing. For example, I tried to draw two people in a canoe on a river; the output often gave me 3 people or 1 person, and didn’t pick up on any details I tried to include illustrating the river or the shore. As I progressively included more detail in my drawing, the output became more accurate, but it was never better than my drawing was to start with. The worst part of this feature was that it immediately stopped working if I turned off my wifi, belying the promise that the generation was being done on the device. There have been a number of other features that have been talked about that are made possible through the neural processing capabilities of the new Snapdragon processors, and I wasn’t able to try them all. I’m sure some of them may be useful. The live translation is a testament to the possibilities of this new hardware architecture. However, Microsoft is either slow to implement some of these or still relies heavily on cloud-based processing for some or all of the work. Microsoft may also be misleading or less than forthcoming regarding what processing is done on device, what is done in the cloud, and how far my data are being shared. So I remain skeptical of what is actually going on here, of where my data are being sent, of what information Microsoft is collecting from me under the guise of “improving” their services, and whether I’ll ever be able to rely on these generative AI models to provide outputs that are useful for any real-world application.

MS Surface Laptop Copilot 13.8" Screen Review
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using this Surface Laptop for about three weeks now, and I'm very impressed with it. The sapphire color is gorgeous in person - way better than the photos on the website make it look. Performance wise it runs everything seamlessly at the same time. Battery life has been great. In addition, the touchscreen is bright and crisp and easy to use as well as using the track pad. Overall, I am really happy I chose this computer and definitely recommend it if you're looking for a reliable, sharp looking laptop that can handle everyday tasks without all the bells and whistles. The Copilot+ features are there if you want them, but the laptop works great regardless of whether you use Copilot.

The Future of Mobile Computing
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 is a well-built companion for your daily tasks. I expected some unique challenges with the move to Windows on an ARM CPU, but I was pleasantly surprised! With most of my daily applications available on the Microsoft store, I had no concerns about compatibility. That’s not to say that x86 emulation doesn’t have it’s issues, it just wasn’t something I had to deal with on my daily driver. Build Quality: The sleek aluminum chassis feels premium and durable. It is relatively lightweight at just under 3 pounds, making it easy to carry around, whether you’re heading to class or to the coffee shop. Hardware: Display: The 13.8-inch, 120hz, 2K, HDR touchscreen is crisp, bright, and a delight to look at. Keyboard and Trackpad: Typing feels comfortable, and the large precision trackpad is responsive. I’m a fan of the haptic touchpad – no corners cut here. Ports: Two USB-C/USB 4 ports, one USB-A, a headphone jack, and a surface connect port cover your connectivity needs. Upgradeability: The bottom cover can be easily removed with just 4 screws under the feet. The only user upgradable component is the M.2 SSD. That being said, the unit itself appears to be highly repairable compared to other laptops in its class. 3. Windows with Copilot: The Surface Laptop 7 runs Windows 11, and the addition of Copilot+ features is intriguing. The Snapdragon X Plus supports advanced AI capabilities with it’s dedicated NPU. Expect smooth multitasking, thanks to 16GB of RAM and the snappy SSD. 4.Performance: Everyday tasks—browsing, streaming, and document editing—are a breeze. General photo editing and casual gaming? No problem. For more heavy-duty workloads, it holds up, but do not expect workstation-level performance. The Surface Laptop 7 is a great daily driver for my typical workloads. Windows is snappy, the ARM SOC sips power, and having direct access to a dedicated NPU makes me excited for future possibilities. If you value portability, build quality, battery life, and a touch of AI magic, this notebook should be on your potential buy list.

Microsoft knocked it out of the park!
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used a lot of laptops over the years and this laptop has ticked almost every single box. Here is a breakdown on my thoughts. Screen - Absolutely stunning for an IPS. Great color reproduction, great brightness, no screen bleed, and a fast 120hz refresh rate. I daily an OLED monitor, and yes they superior in a lot of ways, but this is still a great IPS monitor. Added bonus of not having to worry about burn in. Response time is okay, and I don't use the touch screen at all to be honest. Keyboard & Trackpad - Finally a nice haptic touchpad on a Windows laptop, thank you Microsoft. It is just as good if not better than my wife's MacBook Air M2. The keyboard is good as well. Comfortable to type on, backlighting is pleasant, and good travel distance. Chassis - Nice premium material. Feels great in the hands. Decent port selections with 1 USB A and 2 USB C 4.0. Performance - After initial setup and updates, I have notice zero issues or hiccups. Day to day tasks run smooth, and performance is more than enough for the average user. 16gb is nice to have on the base model instead of 8gb on a lot of other laptops. I upgraded the SSD with a 1tb Corsair MP 600 Mini. It has lower power consumption than the SanDisk/WD SN740 these come with. It also has faster read/write speeds but the average user will never notice. Battery life - This thing is excellent. I am charging my laptop about once a week. The idle drain on the battery is minimal at best. This is where I have notice most of the gains with this CPU. I can pick it up 3 days later and I have only lost 4-6% battery. You can't do that with an x86 CPU. I know Intel's Lunar Lake has made great strides in battery life but I still feel like this is superior. Compatibility - This is the only area I truly can knock the laptop. Yes, it is true that there are programs and games that are not compatible with this architecture. I do play a lot of games and my wife likes to photo edit. Adobe has been make strides in app compatibility and quite a bit of their suite now has an arm app. There will be a few professional apps that may never get an arm port and that's alright if you have access to another PC/MAC or you temper your expectations. As a gamer instead of just being mad that certain games don't work, I try and find what does and try them out. I am a huge Age of Empires player and fortunately all of the new Definitive Editions for the older games are compatible. www.worksonwoa.com - is a great site to check for games/apps that you may be interested in using on the laptop and I recommend you check it out before you purchase this to know what you might be missing out on. Overall - I think this is a great laptop. It is finally a MacBook Air for those of us that like or must use windows. Great chassis, great screen, great keyboard, great trackpad, amazing battery life, great performance. I know as Microsoft embraces ARM more, we will see greater compatibility for a lot of apps out there. 10/10 would recommend for most casual users, and tech nerds like me that understand the compatibility limitations on ARM at this point in time.

Impressive Upgrade Experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have always used Microsoft Windows as my favorite operating system but have not had a Surface laptop in many years. I was thrilled to find out about the new AI Surface Laptop enhanced with Copilot+. I chose the Sapphire color for the new Surface and was blown away with how beautiful it was in person. I realized it had been many years since I had any laptop that was not the standard silver color, so the Surface immediately stood out. My friends also commented on how beautiful the color was and how nice the display appeared on it. I did notice that even though the laptop color was amazing that fingertip marks did e up being noticeable on the lid from usage but would wipe away with a microfiber cloth. I had read all the specs Microsoft shared about the product before releasing it to the public and I was curious how fast the Surface would operate with the Snapdragon X Plus chip with 10 cores and a Neural Processing Unit. I have to say that after I quickly did the initial setup, I realized that the system worked quicker than what I was used to. I was also drawn to this model because it had plenty of storage with the 512GB SSD. A new feature that I found after setting up my Surface was the new Windows Hello security feature which lets you setup signing in with a PIN or with your biometrics information. I chose to use my facial recognition since it would be faster than me trying to make the entries on the keyboard. I was surprised how accurate and much quicker it was for me to get past the normal sign on area with the device validating via the webcam that I was truly the person who installed the biometric data. I decided to research the new feature and was thrilled to find out how much more secure the Windows Hello security was than the standard methods adding to the encryption methods as well. Overall, I cannot say enough good things about how much the device has matured since my previous experience, but it has spoiled me from going back to regular laptops.

Finally, better battery life!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a windows guy through and through and have eagerly awaited the day that I would be able to have a laptop with solid battery life and not have to be tethered to the outlet or a power bank. That day has finally arrived and it could not have come sooner as I was starting to think that I would have to switch to Apple just to get a laptop that could keep up with me. Now for those who follow Microsoft as a company and all that they do and have accomplished should already know that this is not anything new as they have tried previously with Windows RT and they made some grand promises that never panned out. This time around though I think that it will work as there are more developers working with Microsoft and from my time with my Surface 7, I think that Microsoft will deliver this time around. :::Initial Impressions::: Sapphire Blue! That is the device I chose and I love it so much, even the box it comes in matches the color of the device. It is a little disappointing though that Microsoft did not make matching chargers missed opportunity there. Upon opening the box, it is pretty much what you expect the device, power cord & documentation. Opening the laptop, it powered on just by opening it much like a Chromebook would. This is very much the usual Windows setup & experience that you would expect the only big difference here is that you will not find X86 internals. What you will find under the hood is an ARM chip made by Qualcomm. :::General Thoughts::: You might be wondering so what is the big deal with these devices, why are they being hyped so much and who is this for? Like I mentioned earlier this is Microsoft’s answer to what Apple is doing with their M-line of processors that power all their devices. These devices are brought to the market with promises of better battery life, AI enabled features that aid you in whatever you may need assistance with. I tried co-pilot and co-creator with paint it made a beautiful work of art with my nonexistent art skills. Now who is this exactly for? Now this is best for the casual everyday user like a student or professional who would rely heavily on the Office suite of applications. The biggest issue you will face is that not all applications will run on this device or the Snapdragon Elite because developers need to add support for ARM powered devices. You will find YouTube videos of individuals testing out what works and what does not. I would say that this should not deter you from looking at or picking one of these up because I most certainly have been enjoying my time with my Surface. It is only a matter of time before X86 emulation gets better, efficient, and more apps have ARM support. Individuals who want to game on these devices can but do not expect it to outperform a gaming laptop with NVIDIA or AMD graphic’s it is not capable of that yet but may possibly be able to do so in the future. Android phones are a testament to that if you stop and look at the high-end devices and the games that run on it then I would say that Windows on ARM is looking good and it has a bright future ahead. As far as hardware in concerned you get two Variants the Snapdragon Plus & Elite. They are similar but with minor differences between the two. The design of the SL7 is like past iterations so you know it is a quality device. It feels good to hold and has some heft. The trackpad has been improved and feels amazing in comparison to my Surface Pro 9, the keyboard is good and responsive and backlit it gets plenty bright, the screen is amazing and the usual 3:2 ratio. Battery life is amazing in my use, some light gaming, work, and media consumption I easily got 15 hours with Spotify, co-pilot, co-creator, cloud gaming on Gamepass and a few other apps opened. You get the 39W charger included but I have the 67W charger and that is the way to go for a quick charge. :::Pros & Cons::: Pros: - Amazing battery life - Quiet - Same windows experience - Love Sapphire Blue! Cons: - Not every app is ARM compatible - No light indicator when charging via USB C - Cannot install games on this device with Native app Gamepass :::Closing thoughts::: I did not touch on specifications because these are not Intel or AMD devices and there are only two choices with minor differences but both provide comparable experiences. I am looking forward to what Microsoft & Qualcomm can do here it is off to a good start and I might just end up picking up a surface pro-11. I love my SP9 and all that it had to offer. Microsoft, please bring back the surface Headphones they were amazing. Imagine an AI powered set of headphones please make it happen. :::TL;DR::: Microsoft is experimenting again and has made some big changes that will change how you work, play, and do everyday tasks. Pick one up and check it out for yourself.

Great college laptop
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this laptop. I bought it for college and have been using it for about 2 months now and it is very portable and not heavy. It has such a good battery life which is what I was looking for in a laptop as the school rentals were the worst because the battery would drain in like 2 hours. Face ID and touchscreen is the best and it has such an easy and sleek design!
