Love the 3:2 screen!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first Surface and am kicking myself a little for not trying out an earlier version. This is just a beauty. Sleek looking, screams high quality with a beautiful screen. Even the box it comes in just shows the quality you are about to behold. Every other laptop I’ve ever seen comes in a plain brown package. I felt the need to be super careful opening this one so as not to damage it. Almost feels like plastic. Very impressive. Love how it turned itself on the first time I flipped up the lid. A little set up with Cortana, it was off to the races. My last laptop didn’t have a touch screen so it’s taking a bit to realize I have one again. But it sure is nice to have the option. Very responsive as well. Battery life is great, the magnetic charger is really cool, it just sticks to the side. What I love the most is the 3:2 screen. It just seems bigger than 15 inches. As I age, my eyes are needing larger screens and this is just perfect and keeps the laptop at a more manageable size to lug around with me. Loaded Adobe Lightroom on it and did a little photo editing. Working great for that so this may be coming with me now on my weekend photography excursions. Especially with the 512 SSD Microsoft has done a fantastic job with this latest Surface

Very Good Thin Windows Laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted a lightweight and thin laptop for traveling and use at work while still having power, but I’m not much of an Apple fan. Thus, I liked the idea of Microsoft tailoring a product to Windows to make it more efficient, and I was happy to give the Surface Laptop 4 a try. Microsoft has taken a few pages out of Apple’s playbook when it comes to the experience you get when unpacking this laptop. This was the most satisfying unboxing experience I’ve had with a Windows-based product. The laptop is very thin and light, but feels very sturdy. I like how Microsoft chose to still include a USB-A port since many devices are still transitioning to USB-C ports. I would have, however, liked for Microsoft to include another USB-C port on the other side as well as a micro-SD card slot. Setup was typical for a normal Windows computer, but it seemed quicker. I thought the speed was more than adequate for daily use, but was surprised that this laptop came with an older AMD chipset. The touchscreen is a great feature to use while at work, and the keyboard was nice to use. I did find that the lack of a number pad made certain aspects of my job a little slower. Pros Lightweight Decent speed Touchscreen Large responsive trackpad Backwards compatible with USB-A port Cons 1 USB-C port No micro-SD card slot Older AMD chip Lacks number pad Overall, I would recommend this laptop. Though this laptop may be missing a few luxuries, they did a great job at making a thin, yet powerful, laptop.

Sleek, Pristine, Snappy, Versatile
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Surface Laptop 4 is the latest portable PC to grace my lap, table, carry tray, etc. I’m particular about packaging. I guess I feel that a company sends a bit of a message about how they feel about their product in the way it’s packaged. The SL4 comes in very premium, sturdy packaging. Each piece and part neatly tucked away, well protected, precisely wrapped – it is excellent. Upon removing the plastic, my first reaction was that of surprise at how sleek the laptop is. The feel is dripping “premium” and it looks fantastic. As I probed the device, I thought, “there are no seams”. There are, but it took additional lighting and a closer look to even see them. The SL4 is also very thin but doesn’t feel fragile. It’s got that feel of worth that few devices have. My household owns other laptops from other manufacturers, one is a powerful gaming rig, but none of them feel like the SL4. It’s nice in the hands. Another cool moment from the unboxing was the first time I opened the lid – the SL4 powered up. I thought this was a nice touch. Didn’t have to press the power button; it just began to boot up. Kind of felt like it was already mine – I liked that! Of course, Windows 10 is the OS for the SL4, and I am an everyday Windows 10 user for work and home. It took little effort to get my new laptop up and running with a familiar environment. Desktop, OneDrive, email, apps – all copied into the new environment in a snap. I think Microsoft has really done some good work in this department, and the ease of transitioning from one device to the next is very appreciated. The SL4 has a very quiet, clean base – by that I’m referring to the lack of extras, buttons, stickers, etc on the platform deck where the keyboard resides. The power button is blended comfortably into the keyboard space. I really like the look; clean and visually aesthetic. The keyboard is spacious, with individual keys and what I consider to be good key travel, feel, and feedback. I have what I consider comfortable and typist-friendly keyboards I use for both work and personal desktop space. The SL4 keyboard is not quite on the level of either of those but is one of the best I’ve used on a laptop/convertible. It feels right when typing – very responsive and natural. The trackpad is spacious and has adequate palm detection. I am typing this review on the SL4, and I have not once had an accidental cursor reposition or mouse move during that time. I have large hands, so that’s a first for me. The trackpad is responsive, as you’d expect, and handles gestures well with good accuracy. The screen is very good as well. With laptops moving to OLED, while Microsoft is sticking with what they call PixelSense. I find it to more than adequate for standard, single app usage and multitasking. It is bright and sharp with good color accuracy as well. The coating is reflective, but not overbearing in backlighting conditions. It is touchscreen, and if you’re like me, you touch screens on laptops that don’t have the feature. I find it convenient to just reach up to the screen on occasion and tap buttons, links, shortcuts, desired cursor locations, etc. The screen is so close to the keyboard, and additional movement and coordination is required for mouse input in the same situations. Maybe that comes from using a touchscreen 2-in-1 for the last 7 years or so. Using the SL4, I found it to be very responsive and flexible. In lightweight usage, like browsing the web, using email, and streaming, it performs beautifully. You really expect this out of a machine like this. What about a little heavy lifting? Well, I did some video editing, in 4K at that, and I was very surprised at how the SL4 responded. I guess pushing this device is when the AMD 8-core processor begins to shine. There isn’t much that rivals video encoding on a PC. I was more than pleased as I watched the percentage of completion increase at a decent pace. The SL4 handles multiple apps without issue, as well as heavy browser loads with double-digit tabs open. I never felt as if it was struggling or overworking to perform any tasks, and I only experienced the fan activating once – during 4K video encoding. The SL4 resumed and signed me in consistently within 2-3 seconds after opening the lid and showed snappy performance during basic navigation of the operating system and day-to-day apps. Did I mention Surface Pen support? Well, there it is. Pick up your existing pen, and just start writing. I have a Surface Slim Pen, and I literally just pulled it out and started writing on the screen – no waiting, no lag, just immediate inking. This is a welcome edition for PDF editing and quick scribbles when needed. The only time I wanted more from this device is when thinking of touch and pen input. It would be nice if this was a full convertible, but the screen stops at somewhere around 130 degrees or so. I guess that’s what they have the Surface Pro line for – which I have owned since the Surface Pro 3. In the end, the Surface Laptop 4 has renewed my interest in this form factor. It is slick, clean, and performs very well. This is an easy purchase decision for anyone looking for a very good premium Windows laptop. The only buyer that should think more about it would be the hardcore gamer or someone needing the power of discrete graphics.

Surface Laptop 4 is wonderful!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve had the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 for about a week now. This is a great laptop, looks and performance-wise. In the box, you obviously get the beautiful laptop. You also get a power brick, that is about average size and has a single USB port on it to charge other devices without using another port. The power cord to your outlet is standard, but the power cord to the laptop is proprietary (similar to other surface branded computing products). From unbox to a functioning/usable laptop takes a few minutes but there are always system updates needed. Those updates took another 30 minutes to complete. Windows Hello (microsoft’s facial recognition software) works very, very well. Once it’s set up, during initial set up, logging into your new laptop is incredibly fast and simple, without needed to remember another password. It made the reboots easier to tolerate while the computer was updating. Part of the reason this works so well is due to a great camera, which is really nice for Zoom. Unwrapping the Surface Laptop 4 unveils a sharp looking, super thin laptop. While the laptop is really thin, it is deceptively heavy considering how thin it is. I got the Matte Black version and it’s stunning to look at. My configuration is the 15” touchscreen with the AMD Ryzen processor. In the week that I’ve been using this computer for Zoom calls, working in Microsoft productivity products (like excel and word), and playing a little xbox (thru the dedicated Microsoft xbox app and thru the cloud beta) and I haven’t heard/noticed the fan once. If it is coming on, it’s insanely quiet and laptop stays very cool to the touch (this is a laptop after all). The laptop plays very nice with surface earbuds and Bluetooth capable xbox controllers. Setting those devices up was a breeze. Connecting your phone, no matter the brand, is simple as well through the USB or USB-C port on the left side of the laptop. There is also a headphone jack for connecting wired headphones, if you still use them. Battery life seems very good. Microsoft quotes 17.5 hours for my configuration and I’ve seen right around that depending on the day’s activity. I will say that Zoom can be a pretty big battery suck though. Thanks to the multitasking power, the Surface Laptop 4 can handle any of the work requirements I throw at it without any slowdown. And after work, since my 3 year old can hog the TV screen from time to time, I’m free to have my own screen for entertainment/content consumption. Xbox games play wonderfully on this device and shows/movies look great. This is a really, really nice machine. Bravo to Microsoft for a high quality product worthy of the Microsoft name.

Love it!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Surface 4 with Ryzen CPU is a more-than-capable computer. I played a graphics-intensive game and no stuttering, though it did get a bit warm and the fan was blasting. The display is crisp and clear. The unit itself is light and thin so very portable. Although it doesn't fold flat, the addition of a touch screen is handy when clicking on buttons, etc.
