Having had experience with Microsoft Surface tablets in the past I didn't have high hopes for the new Surface Laptop Studio - boy was I wrong. To begin with, the Studio comes packaged in a solid almost wood-like box, presented like the gem it is. I struggle with this however. While it's nice to know that a company wants to make it's product seem as worthy as the packaging (the Studio definitely is), at the end of the day most of the packaging just ends up in the trash. The Studio’s build quality is excellent. The backlit keyboard is a joy to type on, one of the best laptop keyboards i’ve used. The trackpad is on par with my Macbook Pro, it is very responsive and the new haptic feedback is on point. Unlike “diving board” trackpads, you can click anywhere on this one and it knows if you click in the lower right side, it's a right button click. Very nice. The 14.4 inch touch screen display is a thing of beauty. 120 hertz paired with the Geforce discrete graphics provides buttery smooth scrolling and excellent game play. OLED would have been nice though. Another thing with the display is the corners are now rounded which cut off the corners of windows but not a big deal as most times this only affects the title bar. The hinge on the display feels solid and the magnets that hold it in the two positions are strong. I did notice some flexing on the screen when using the pen in studio mode however. The Slim Pen works better than any of the devices I've used in the past and it doesn’t require any hard to find special batteries. It charges under the front lip and is held on by strong magnets. Writing is smooth due to the 120 hertz refresh and the tip is pressure sensitive. The only downside is it is a separate purchase. The I7 chip, 16GB ram and 512GB SSD make the laptop snappy and enough to handle most anything you throw at it. A major disappointment is that Microsoft claims there are no user serviceable parts inside so make your first shot your best as you can not upgrade further. The webcam is 1080 and looks fantastic and the built in microphones sound great, no trouble at all for zoom or team meetings. The Studio has four speakers that sound impressive. They do not have all the base you might want but there is plenty of volume. Battery life is fantastic for a device with this much power, it easily provides a full work day and more. The laptop comes with Microsoft’s charger which is magnetic so if it gets caught on something or your pet walking through it, it will just pop out without pulling your new laptop to the ground. There is also a charging light on the charger but it's on the outside making it difficult to see. I would have preferred it to be on the top or bottom of the plug to be more visible. The Studio will also charge via the USB C ports. The base has a two-tier design which I really like. It does make the unit a little thicker than it initially appears but the heat vents blow out the sides rather than bottom so using this in your lap does not block the vents causing it to overheat. Regarding heat, I didn’t notice any loud cooling fan noise at all. I could feel air movement but the laptop remained very quiet - a giant plus over some of the competition. The Surface Laptop Studio comes with Windows 11. Setup took about 30 minutes while it downloaded updates and such. I like the look and feel, however there are still a few remnants of Windows 10 hiding in the background, something I imagine future updates will take care of. Having the bar move to the center is very Mac-like and I had no trouble adjusting to it. Finding some of the settings wasn't as easy as it should have been but I was able to find them using the search. The new Surface Pen is nice but at this price point and use case for the device, it should have been included and not a separate purchase. Also, there is no USB C dongle for USB A, another required purchase for those with older USB devices. Overall, I am very happy with the new Surface Laptop Studio and feel it is a solid contender with the likes of Dell and HP. I highly recommend everyone to consider it for your next laptop purchase.

The laptop is falling apart within 2 weeks in. First of the rubber in the top of the tablet is hard plastic and it’s falling off. Take it that I’ve only have folded the top flat once or twice maybe at opening the box. Yet, when I tried folding the top the third time I analyzed it’s components and noticed that the plastic was coming out of its gap and quickly It made me fold the top back to a normal stand point. In my opinion for the price this laptop cost is not the quality that I was deliver as a product. I love windows and it always has been my reliant but this time it has let me down.

This freezes pretty frequently. For the price it does work great for creating content and the touchscreen, if you don’t need touch screen I wouldn’t recommend it.

    Power and Flexibility

If you are interested in a laptop that has power and flexibility, the Surface Laptop Studio is something you should seriously consider. DESIGN AND BUILD - The two-tier design of the base is unique and makes the laptop look bulky, but it's not much thicker than a Macbook Pro. It is a bit on the heavier side at about 4 pounds. Weight does seem evenly distributed though, so the laptop feels sturdy. Overall, it looks and feels great. The standout feature is the screen (more on that later). KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD - Key travel is sufficient. Most importantly, it is relatively quiet when you type - a real plus in my book! I wish the function keys were full-size, but overall, the keyboard cannot be beaten. It's almost perfect. The trackpad works flawlessly. It is large and feels like a Macbook trackpad because it is static and uses a haptic engine to give you a tapping sensation along with an audible click. If you used a Magic Trackpad on a recent Apple laptop, this works the same way. DISPLAY AND SOUND - There are two big things worth noting regarding the display. The 120hz screen is very impressive. Scrolling web pages, in general, is very smooth. It's hard to explain, but if you are familiar with the 120hz refresh rate, then you know the difference it will make. The laptop is advertised in three different screen modes: Laptop, Stage, and Studio. The laptop is self-explanatory. Stage mode is where it kind of looks like a tent where the screen moves over the keyboard deck, just in front of the trackpad. Studio mode is when the screen comes all the way down flat over the keyboard and trackpad - ideal for using the Surface Pen 2. The laptop gets very loud when it comes to sound. I was quite surprised too because there are no speaker grills in this product. So sound must come from the keyboard deck and the grills under the laptop. No matter which display mode you use the laptop in, music and movies sound great. I wish it had a bit more bass, but for a laptop, the sound quality is awesome. POWER - If you're a creative professional who needs a computer with power, then this laptop is worth considering. The 11th Gen i7 processor, along with the dedicated NVIDIA RTX 3050, makes using Adobe Creative Cloud software a breeze. Running both InDesign and Photoshop simultaneously with large files did not make the laptop slow down in any way. On my previous Dell XPS 13, you would noticeably feel the computer slow down and hear the fans spin up. This laptop is quiet, but you can feel the heat coming out from the bottom as all the heat is expelled to the sides. Not really a big deal, but kind of a weird feeling. OVERALL - I am very impressed with the Surface Laptop Studio. Like any other Surface product, this laptop looks amazing, the build quality is perfect, the keyboard is perfect, the screen modes make it multi-functional, and it has the power you would need/expect in a laptop. While this laptop is on the chunky and heavy side, appearance and performance do make up for it. I would recommend this for any design creative professional like myself who needs power with a great screen. You will not be let down.
