Make sure not too let your toddler get ahold of it, it's easy to smash the nips which allow for a more brush-pen like drawing experience. Thankfully there are extras in the box.

It sounds like your last Surface Pen was a previous model. This version of Surface Pen is the most recent which comes equipped with a magnetic connection for your Surface device in lieu of a clip. We hope this helps clarify.
