The pen loses battery more quickly when not magnetically docked, and if you’re always on the go with the surface book in tablet mode (as I am for work) it can become dislodged when bumped. I’m on pen number 4 in 3 years and just went ahead and purchased them in bulk for a discount this time.

Keep in mind, the pen functions right out of the package, but ensure you go into Windows Ink and pair your bluetooth connection, then set up your button press shortcuts. For me, one click opens up Windows Ink, Two presses opens OneNote to a new blank page, and press and hold takes a screenshot. My workflow is fantastic.
