A Power-Packed Tablet for Serious Productivity

The concept of a productivity focused tablet has long held appeal for me. Almost all current tablet offerings exist primarily as media consumption devices. The capacity to interact with productivity stalwarts such as Word and Powerpoint via touch coupled with the sublime capability to effectively transcribe notes by hand using the excellent stylus is of great value in my line of work. All of these tasks and many more are accomplished with ease by the new Surface. It should also be mentioned that the build quality is top-notch and the type cover upon which I am writing this review is the best "keyboard cover" I have ever used by a fair margin. There exist many solutions to the "hybrid' proposition raised by Windows 8 and, for me, the Surface Pro is the most elegant of these. If you have different needs than me and require more tablet-like battery there exist plenty of products for you as well #such as the Iconia W700#. Finally, I ought to respond to some of the commonly cited criticisms of the Surface Pro. It is true that the Pro is noticeably heavier and thicker than the ARM based iPad #or equivalent#. I have not found this objectionable and still can handle the Pro easily in one hand but I would guess weight sensitivity varies by the individual. Battery life on the Pro has been around 5hrs during my fairly rigorous work usage. This is in keeping with most Ultrabooks of similar specs and a fair bit better than many convertible tablet options #Vaio Duo 11 for instance#. Given the fact that the Surface Pro is one of the very smallest Ultrabooks in existence, I would say this is quite an achievement. Lastly, it has often been asserted that the Surface Pro lacks the ability to be used on one's lap in an analogous manner to a laptop. This, as with weight sensitivity, likely depends on individual preference. I am typing this review on my Pro while sitting in a recliner with the tablet positioned on my lap. I have no difficulty with this position and do not find it in the least precarious. I have listed the value for this item as "Average" because the approximately $1200 entry price represents a midpoint in Ultrabooks of similar specs. This latest offering out of Redmond will certainly not be for everyone but, for those who require a small, powerful computer with excellent touch and stylus capability it may prove an excellent option. The Surface Pro illustrates the full potential of Windows 8 and, for me at least, makes an excellent travel companion and work laptop.

For taking notes, the Surface pro with the type key pad really does a good job. Its functionality as a PC is good.

It is what you expect. A laptop with the size of a tablet. It's good but may not be worth the current price for it.

Run a digital publishing house and the Surface Pro is perfect for the applications I need. Software is not restricted to Microsoft programs, can use Photoshop and other graphics software, Quick Books, etc. Touch screen is great for applications with graphics. Considering purchasing additional devices for our staff. The size and flexibility of a tablet are great for meetings, and travel. Also purchased the lighted keyboard.

I returned it after demoing it for a week. I had hoped it would work as a very portable computer running a specific program I use in an outdoors environment at work. The device itself seemed well made, solidly sturdy and with no moving parts was very fast. For me the Surface Pro touch screen was to small to use and not bright enough to see outdoors. I can see this device being used by someone needing a very small, light weight and fully functional computer indoors.

The tablet is excellent compared to comparable competitors and offers much more versatility than Apple from a business standpoint. Microsoft obviously needs to get more apps and it is disappointing that they did not preload office on the pro as they do with their less expensive models. Having said that, I will stay with Microsoft and never go back to the iPad.

I currently use my Surface Pro for everyday use. When I first purchased it, I asked myself, "What I could use this for?" Every day after that, I've found a reason to use it! Currently, it is being used as an AMAZING work tool. I'm in meetings all day, and it is perfect for note taking, previews, and working on files on-the-go. I would highly recommend anyone who is in the market for a tablet to purchase this item!

just as cross trainers are designed for the best of two worlds, so the surface pro is too. I like bikes that I can comfortably take off-road, but fare well on the pavement too. there will be compromises, but I think Microsoft handled this one well. I like it as a mobile tool.

Not good for EMR... Size matters

I thought that this would be an awesome addition to my new practice and I waited for it to come out instead of just getting an IPad because I wanted an all in one computer that I could take care of all my business needs on including email through outlook word processing and excel. Also I liked the idea of the magnetic key board that is docked and stays on without being too clunky to move around and it's not in the way when I don't want to use it. The touch screen is awesome for my EMR but anytime I type things it takes forever becuase the screen is too small and the EMR screens are kind of smushed into the screen. I have tried to change this several different ways including contacting my EMR tech support and we couldn't get the screen print any larger and becuase windows 8 just does not like my EMR, it seems, everytime I increase just the font size so at least the words are bigger it crashes and the whole tablet shuts off. So for now, I have to do the touch screen functions in my treatment room and go to another network computer to type the rest of my note. Still seems like a good idea if maybe windows 8 could make it easier to enlarge the screen on the tablet, not just the programs that are on it that can do that. I spent a lot of money for this to be an all in one for me, so I really want it to work for me.

Used by working mom and eight year old boy an we both love it equally. Works better than my last two laptops when used with type cover. Fully functional as home computer for working at home, and still a great easy tablet. I like the apps available, and am actually grateful there are not yet as many as with the iPad as it helps me regulate games appropriate for my son. Lots of. Learning options lots of fun options.

I have had my Surface now for a little over a month, and it is helping me out at work, school, and home. It is easy to use - the apps all work great -- but of course, Surface 2 is around the corner, so maybe it will be outdated and unsupported soon. :( But for now, I'm enjoying it immensely, and really happy I decided to get it.

I have been waiting for a Windows device like this for a long time. Thank You Microsoft for making this a great device out of the box. As Samsung dominates the cell phone market, Microsoft is well on it's way with perfecting an already great tablet. This device is a laptop and a tablet with full Flash support for online multimedia.
