Lots of Capability
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great capability, but it needs to have some kind of manual to allow those of us who are not geeks to learn how to use all of them!

Great for Work - will replace ultrabook and tablet
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I manage the computers for a prosecutor’s office. The two biggest complaints I hear about using technology in the courtroom are 1. my laptop is too big and bulky for the work area in the courtroom, I need something the size of an IPad. 2. I need to be able to have access to all of my files and programs like PowerPoint, etc. The surface is our answer and it will save money. We need a laptop that runs Windows Professional to allow the laptop to connect to our Domain for security. We need a tablet for the portability and easy of doing legal research on the Internet. The IPad/Android only gave us the Internet and not the ability to be part of our secure domain. The surface Pro has the Professional version of Windows so I have been able to join it to our Domain and run all of our commercial and specialized software. An added bonus is that our attorneys take lots of notes, the stylus and OneNote will allow us to take hand written notes and save them out as pdfs, etc. We could not have done this on an IPad because the writing pads apps look more like I am using a magic marker instead of a pen. For a next budget cycle, we are going to replace our 5+ year old laptops with the Surface. If you compare the cost of buying a laptop and a tablet, the Surface is a lot cheaper. In addition to the Surface Pro 128 and the type cover, we are going to buy a 1. USB 3.0 docking station that supports dual monitors, LAN (wired network) and has additional usb ports; 2. Portable DVD drives; 3. a couple of display port adapters for presentations; and 4. wireless full-size keyboard and mouse. When the user is at his/her desk, they will plug in the power cord and the usb docking station that has the LAN, monitor, keyboard/mouse, and DVD. At this point, they have a full function computer system. For when needed on the go, they take the surface, type cover and the portable DVD player, if needed. I have tested that all of this works on our Windows 2008 R2 Domain with group policies. The issues I have encountered are: 1. The type cover sometimes has a small lag with the touch pad. This could be related to me using two fingers to move and click. 2. Windows 8 Pro has given me some issues with adding the .net 3.5 framework after I join the domain. MS states this is related to the Windows Update Service on our Domain. I recommend installing the 3.5 framework before joining the Domain. Otherwise, you have to use a local copy of Windows 8 and the dos command to manually install the 3.5 framework. Everybody in our office who has seen Windows 8 things that it is cool and easy to use. As with any new software, there is a learning curve. As an IT person, if our budget would support it, we would all have Windows 8 computers (either Surface Pro or a Desktop with Touch screen).

wINDOWS 8 IS DIFFICULT TO GET USED TO

Limited Remote Desktop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For $1200 this pad is way overpriced for all the things windows 8 is not compatible with.. To view my webcams for my business I have to shut off user account control and reboot the pad. Most all of the tiles on the start screen will not function without user account control running. So I have to turn UAC back on and reboot the pad to get the start screen to function as designed. I use Remote Desktop to run my business computers remotely. Remote Desktop is not easy to turn on in windows 8 and pinch zoom is not available yet with it. It is nearly impossible to read numbers remotely without some sort of magnification. The iPad is cheaper, way more apps are available for the iPad , and the afore mentioned problems are a non-issue with the IPad . Flash is available for surface pro, however, and not for any apple product. Lets face it , there are a lot of applications that still use flash that cannot be viewed on the apple.. Oh yeah, the mouse pad is sub par on the surface pro also.. So I tried the surface pro for three days and took it back..still using my ipad2...and I have a lot of extra cash in my pocket and my apps run without a hitch!
