The BEST 2-in-1 Laptop you can buy for school

I have been using the Surface Pro line for about two years now. I did not know much about the product when I first bought it, but knowing it ran Windows was enough for me. When I say it is the best laptop I've used, I mean that full-heartedly. With the pen, I am able to take comprehensive, rewatchable notes in OneNote, annotate screenshots and PDFs, and do some light sketching. This particular model also eliminates previous stylus jitter problems. Then, with the versatility of the type cover, I can type out Word documents and browse the web. The keyboard has great travel, and a very, very smooth trackpad with touch gestures. It is also backlit. I have also noticed great compatibility with just about every OS. iOS integration isn't the tightest, but OneDrive integrates directly into the iPhone files app, making sending files super easy. Android devices have the luxury of the Your Phone app however. Also, most parts of Windows are web-based, so it just adds more compatibility as to what features you can pull up on other devices. Finally, performance of the Surface Pro is outstanding. I am able to run Photoshop and After Effects with ease. While there may be some thermal throttling, most heating issues resolve in about 10 minutes.
All in all, if you are looking for something portable, powerful, versatile and great for school or work, this is the way to go. You will not regret using the Surface Pro and its accessories, as you will find its features and integration just become easier over time and more compatible with all of your other devices.

Just for perspective, this is my third Surface device.
It's an incremental upgrade over the Surface Pro 6, to be sure. But, it of absolute importance that it be stressed that in two key areas, the jump is significant.
First off, it looks almost exactly the same as the past couple of Surface Pros. The first major addition is the USB-C port, which while somewhat disappointingly not Thunderbolt, does open up a wide range of peripherals to be connected to this computer with ease. It really opens up the possibilities of this computer, and brings it up to date in terms of general connectivity.
Also, the processor speed increase is absolutely evident. This thing is incredibly snappy, and you just feel it in general usage how quick everything just works, and the multitasking ability noticeably stronger in every regard. Video performance is also much stronger on the i5 (which I have), and Adobe Premiere Pro had a much better sense of usability compared with the i5 in the Pro 6, which I had previously used.
The screen feels even more responsive than before, as well. I had some issues withe responsiveness on the 6, but I don't experience that here at all.
I couldn't be happier with this upgrade, which while it isn't mindblowing, does keep this computer up to date in connectivity and provides a noticeable boost in usability. If you do video editing or need better connectivity, I do think the upgrade is worth it. If you are just using your Surface 5 or 6 for general work, it might not be as important to upgrade.
However, if this is your first Surface Pro, THIS is where you want to jump in.

I bought a used Surface Pro 4 back in early 2016 that has lasted relatively well besides the touch screen not working (it was dropped), losing its charge faster than normal, and it starting to feel slow. I loved it for taking notes at school and it served me well. I'm starting my masters and I wanted to upgrade to I went with this since it was on sale. This is so much faster and the battery holds its charge like a champ! Also want to give props to Microsoft for keeping these surface pros the same size and being backwards compatible with older type covers and surface pens. Yes, it can be a lot of money if you are just coming into it since you will probably want to buy a type cover and a pen, but I if Microsoft keeps this up and you take good care of the accessories when you upgrade you will only have to buy the main device itself.

I really enjoyed my time with the SP7. It is a versatile device and I love the option of using it as a tablet or a laptop. Windows 10 was not optimized for tablet form as the buttons and menu clicks were often too small for finger taps. I bought this machine because as a teacher I needed it for remote teaching. It handled basic tasks fine, but it would get hot and the battery would drain during Zoom calls. I had to return it as I spent a large part of my work day on Zoom. Would have loved to have kept the SP, but I needed something with a bit stronger battery life.

I have worked on Surface Pro’s since they were first introduced with the Surface Pro 1. I’ve had the Surface Pro 2, 3 and 4. I had them for work and every couple years they’d upgrade our equipment. After I left, the 5 and 6 came out and had better more current features and I wanted one. But the old Pro 4 kept doing what I needed and I couldn’t justify the expense. When the Surface Pro 7 came out I was considering it. It’d been long enough and my Pro 4 was feeling old and slower. I’d check out the Microsoft Store website from time to time to see how pricing was but still more than I wanted to really pay.
I must have really lucked out because one weekend at Best Buy, they had the Pro 7 in stock and it was on a very good sale. For under $700, I couldn’t resist and felt it was a good time to get it.
I already had a MS keyboard and pencil, which worked with the new Pro 7 out of the box. I did in the end, but the new version of the Pencil though for more features and compatibility. The old pencil worked fine, but the pencil would “drop off” frequently and I’d have to reconnect. It was the old 2 button model. The newer 1 button and eraser button model I’ve not had any compatibility issues at all. I’m sure I will eventually get a new keyboard as well, but the old one still works perfectly.
The Pro 7 out of the box was easier to set up and get going. I did buy a micro SD card to expand the memory storage as the built in memory is only 128gb with a usable 80gb. Not much space for this day and age. If you step up to the 256gb or 1tb models, you’re doubling and tripling the purchase price, which for most people is too much. The SD card is a good way of adding storage space, though it is slower than the SSD. I found out a week after I purchased the Pro 7, that Microsoft had designed a new version of the Pro 7 that does allow you to replace the SSD, but it was only available in India. I bet later this year it’ll be an included feature of the Pro 8.
There are massive performance differences between the Pro 7 and the Pro X. The Pro 7 still uses Intel i5/i7 CPUs while the new Pro X uses the Microsoft M chip. It’s like the Intel i3 chip but a bit slower and cheaper (my opinion). The only up feature of the Pro X is the included Mifi chip for connecting to a cellular plan. And the slightly slower performance. But the new M chip is supposed to be better for a longer lasting battery. That isn’t something I’m overly worried about as I don’t use my Pro 7 for work and don’t need to go all day on a single charge. Though I do get a good 4-5 hours on a full battery before I need to plug in again. I mostly use my Pro 7 for surfacing the web, Facebook, reading books in the Kindle app, very light word processing in Word, email, and very very light gaming and for graphics/art drawing. For me, it’s meant to be a very light weight of tablet that I can take with me wherever. Much like an iPad, which I also have and use.

I did a lot of research for the best 2 in 1 laptop and the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 kept beating everyone els in performance, usage and programs. Ive had it for 3 weeks now and i love how fast it is, the ease of use and functionality of it. Overall it is a really good 2 in one tablet/laptop and I highly recommend it. The one downside is the battery life, on a full charge and using it every now and then it only last about 3 days, and on a full charge and on battery saver mode, browsing the web and some light gaming it went from 100% to 45% in a mater of 3 hours. So i gave it 4 stars because its an awesome laptop but for almost a Thousand dollars i wish the battery was better.

So what if I bought it for fun instead of work. I used to haul a bit ole gaming laptop to my parent's house when I'd visit for the weekend but that kinda got old. I have android tablets but that limits what I can/can't do. So I ended up getting a Surface Go and the Surface Pro 7 because I didn't know if I could deal with a small vs larger screen but ended up keeping both.
The processor is snappy, but not near as powerful as my Spectre but also better suited for drawing with the screen ratio. The battery life is acceptable but I'd love a few more hours. Pretty much love it.

My review is from the perspective of an older, experienced laptop user moving to 'new' updated tablet technology so some of this may pertain in part to other solutions in the class. So glad I pivoted and spent a few bucks more purchasing the Surface Pro 7 instead of the conventional 2 laptops I was considering. Coming from an old but dependable HP laptop, I had no idea the tablet experience had come as far as it has with the Surface Pro 7.
Unfolding the keyboard/cover initiates instant wakeup from sleep to instant identification via windows Hello. You are greeted with a gorgeous screen that my 60+ year-old eyes appreciate with sharp text rendering, faithful color and useful 16:10 ratio that really makes the screen appear larger than it is. Excellent lighted keyboard and sensitive (maybe a bit too much) trackpad are better than any of the many laptops I've used. I purchased the pen but don't use all that much, preferring a combination of navigating with trackpad/touch combination.
High end build quality and flexible USB and USB-C ports on side make it possible to use inexpensive third-party accessories for port replication - Hdmi connections etc. Might have preffered a non-proprietary power connection, but the magnetic connector is easy to use and probably will withstand removal/insertion cycles better over the long haul. I purchased a 20 case online which basically functions like a phone case offering some basic protection. Battery life is pretty much all day/evening, but granted I tend to be on/off sporadically so constant use might see different results.
Performance of the I5 chip is instantaneous for my MS office usage, web browsing, light 2D graphic design/Photoshop. Suspect gamers would look elsewhere for 3Drendering. Plenty of built-in performance growth in this package. Really like the built-in gigabyte wi-fi card. I'm getting 1.2 Mbps Wi-fi transfer rates via my Asus gigabit router as I write this.
Even after purchasing cover and pen, overall a great value and one of the few tech purchases I've made with almost no downsides.

I had a Surface Go and wanted to upgrade for the bigger screen. The speed was notably faster than the Go but other than that, everything else was pretty much the same. The only problem I have with these surfaces is that they tend to get pretty hot and end up ignoring the touch of my surface pen. Charging the device ahead of time helps, but I can still notice the heat. Other than that, great device that I highly recommend for students who write out their notes.

I'm not going to go into super detail because I don't think j can do as much justice as more technical people can, but I will say I have own a laptop from every manufacturer that is out there. Now mind you, I did way more research this time, and made my own opinions on the research I did rather than just hearing other people's "opinions". But regardless, this thing is just the best. I really love it. It turns on right away every time. It knows when I close it which is great. And when I open it! Even better! It's also extremely user friendly. I haven't come across anything that I think my father wouldnt likely be able to figure out (who can't even send an email by himself............) But I'll leave it at that lol.
I can't say enough good things. The only possible thing I could ask for is maybe more battery life. But I also usually have a dozen things open because I'm a multitasker and I'm asking a lot of it. So I take most of the blame in that. And I wouldn't say it's really bad anyway. And it comes with a great really long cord which makes it a little more convenient for charging if a plug isn't right next to where you want to sit. Over all I'm ecstatic about it! And I recommend it to everyone!! (Also as a tablet it's just as amazing)
I haven't mastered drawing on it, my lines are a bit shaky, but I think I need to play with the settings... But the paint app it has on there is AMAZING. Seriously. So many amazing features!!!!! 12/10 recommend.
*Side note- I recommend getting a skin for it. They're relatively cheap on Amazon and help to protect it. I also feel it makes it easier to grip. But that's my personal opinion. Plus you get to decorate it to fit your style! They have everything out there you can imagine. And you will always know which one is yours lol
*It would definitely be more than enough for a college kid. I personally like it better than the MacBook.
*I HANDS DOWN, 150%, recommend the brydge keyboard over the Microsoft cover anyday! It actually holds the surface up like a normal laptop, works (types, good back lighting etc) great, connects great, and the battery lasts an unimaginable amount of time. 15/10 recommend.

I've had excellent luck with all of my Surface products (minus the headphones), and this is no exception. I just upgraded from the Surface Pro 5, and so far I have not been disappointed. The only concern I've had has been how hot the back of the unit gets, but it doesn't seem to cause any problems. I paired the Surface Pro 7 with a Brydge Bluetooth keyboard and I couldn't be happier with the setup. Its a great everyday computer that will make your life easier.

It's a tablet but with the proper components of a windows laptop. Performs just as the specs would. However if you need to run extended intensive workload the cooling may not keep up. Best use it for travel or school where the workload is mostly light and the compact size and light weight makes the trade off worth it. Get the keyboard - it's pretty good. But the pen is less useful, and I lost mine already...

I love the new surface pro that I purchased. I bought it for travel and it is a great size to fit in my medium size backpack. It is fast and the key board is easy for typing. My only complaint is that you need to purchase the key board separate and when I was shown the the computer the salesperson did not think the key board came off and lead me to believe it came with the touch screen. Meaning after getting home I had to return to the store and pay an additional large fee for the key pad. A bit pricey.

If you have been on the fence for awhile like I have. The time might be now to jump off the fence and get your Best Buy Deal (wrote this in late October).
While ZERO accessories are included at the price I got. The amount of tech I wanted with the i5 processor and the 8gb of RAM was worth the price for what this tablet can do. And since these don't seem upgradeable like laptops. I would recommend at least the 8GB RAM models for running windows. You can add more space(cloud, sd card, external drives). Yet to see any easy way to increase RAM.
As for the ease of use. Nearly everyone has a touchscreen in their pocket/purse. It is so much easier for many computing tasks to simple touch the screen and slide your fingers. While there are a few shortcomings in Windows that touching might not be enough. I'd recommend the pen over the type cover if your budget can only handle one of the $$$ add-on Surface devices. There is a keyboard on the screen whenever you need it in case the type cover is more than you can afford in store. The pen for Surface is like magic. It makes you more precise and adds a button that adds a bit of mouse functionality. Plus, you will want to draw on the screen, its fun! And as for mice. Not truly needed, but buy the one you like, most mouse/mice will work with the Surface Pro 7. It has Bluetooth and USB.
To Sum it up. Its a PC with Windows in tablet form. We all know how Windows runs a lot of the computing world. And maybe the 6+ inch rectangle in your pocket/purse isn't quite powerful enough to get your work done. And a laptop is too yesterday, Buy the Surface Pro 7. The keyboard type cover is very nice, but for those on a budget. I think the pen from Microsoft or others is money better spent. And if you find yourself in the store testing display models and the Surface Pro 7 feels to heavy. Check out the "Microsoft Surface Go 2". It's A 10 inch tablet running Windows. Again, try to look at models with 8GB of RAM.
