As someone who’s accustomed to Windows, I’ve always been a big fan of the Surface line of devices. They’re sharp looking and functional. Not to mention the size. It’s essentially an iPad but in Windows form. While this is a terrific all around device, it’s still not without its shortcomings, which have plagued the Surface line for a while. If you desire a light and flexible Windows laptop, this should be towards the top of your list.
IN THE BOX
The first drawback, going back to the original Surface, is the fact that the keyboard isn’t included. It’s just a fact. While the Surface line has gotten somewhat “cheaper” over the years, it’s always misleading when you factor in the lack of accessories. Even worse, you no longer get a charger anymore. In the box is simple the Surface and a USB-C cable. Now, granted, the Surface could arguably get a pass given that 27W chargers (which most of us will have with our smart phones) can charge the device, it still stings a little bit when buying an $800 computer to not have a charger.
SETUP
Setup is similar to any Windows computer and your experience can vary depending on a number of factors. A straight new install (i.e. not backing up from old computers) can be pretty quick, but expect it to take some time. It took me about 2 hours to get up and running after taking into account the large Windows update out of the box.
SPECS
Here, you’re getting a 12” super sharp display, 256 or 512GB of storage, Qualcomm Adreno GPU, and an 8 core Snapdragon X Plus chip. As with most new Windows laptops, has a dedicated neural processing unit which is a specialized chip to accelerate AI tasks, taking them away from the CPU and GPU. This allows it to process AI tasks on the device, rather than relying entirely on cloud processing. For everyday tasks, it’s superlative. The Snapdragon X chip allows the device to run cooler and extend battery life when (generally speaking) compared to Intel chips. But you are sacrificing some features - namely compatibility - but more on that below.
While AI features are getting pushed in all our devices, individual mileage will vary depending on your use of AI features. The most obvious one is the built in Copilot function. The free version allows for conversational AI and image creation. You’ll have to pay a monthly fee to get Copilot integration with 365 apps, as well as the latest AI models for conversations.
DESIGN
I’ve always been a fan of the Surface line. Like Macs, I think they’re beautiful and elegant products and scream premium. The Surface 12 inch continues that trend and just looks absolutely great. The big design change, if you can call it that, is the recessed pen storage area on the back. I admit I was a little concerned about that because I thought the pen would come off easily, but the magnets are really strong.
The hinge is really stiff and the same time, easily movable. It has 160 degree movement on the hinge almost allows it to go from straight up to lying flat. It’s smooth and durable.
FEATURES
As stated earlier, one of the drawbacks of the Surface is the need to purchase what I believe to be, necessary accessories. The drawback is simply the price on the Surface itself isn’t the total that you will be paying. But putting that aside, you really need to invest in the Surface keyboard and slim pen to really get the most out of your Surface. I have both, and will be referencing them because I think that’s the best way to highlight the Surface’s features overall.
The Copilot+ PC is Microsoft’s big push towards everywhere AI and that’s really the star of this Surface (to be clear, it’s not limited to Surface devices). But the Surface has a dedicated neural processing unit that allows the computer to process AI on the device itself, rather than in the cloud. A few things that stick out - again, these are available on any Copilot + PC - is recall, cocreator and copilot. Recall is a somewhat controversial feature whereby your PC takes screenshots of your computer and allows you to conduct a search as to what you might have been doing or what was visible on your screen. This feature is a gamechanger for me, I use it to search through old communications whether it be letters or emails. I use it as a search function across my entire device. Cocreator is hit and miss, but allows you to create images with image prompts. It’s cool, but the novelty wears off quickly. There’s also Windows Studio Effects that allows enhanced video chat quality and filters. But this is all subjective and depends on how often you’re on video calls and whether you have a dedicated setup.
It has two USB-C 3.2 ports (with USB4/Thunderbolt support). Either port can handle charging, data transfer, and display port for connecting up to two 4K monitors. It utilizes Wi-Fi 7 (which I guess is future proofing, I don’t have WI-Fi 7) and Bluetooth 5.4.
The big feature for me is battery life and the touchscreen. The battery life is phenomenal, in no small part because of the Snapdragon chip. I use this much like an iPad, where I just hit the power button to put it to sleep and then wake it up when I need it. It just always seems to hold a charge. The touchscreen is terrific and very responsive. It’s even better with the sold separately slim pen. I very much enjoyed writing and drawing on the screen with the slim pen, even though I’m not a creative type by profession. While the novelty wore off a little bit, I do enjoy writing and drawing with the pen when I’m just sitting on the couch and reading the news, surfing the web. It’s a fun way of input.
DOWNSIDES
The big downside is also the Surface’s biggest strength and that’s the Snapdragon processor. While it brings a lot of positives, including snappy performance and very long battery life, you sacrifice a lot of compatibility. Old drivers (mostly printers at my office) are tricky and won’t work, and some software we use at my office isn’t compatible with the Arm architecture. Luckily, there seems to be a concerted effort to expand the Arm ecosystem so hopefully this becomes an absolute non issue.
As I’ve said earlier, one of the biggest complaints is that the keyboard and pen are sold separately. I’ll also say, the AI features aren’t unique to the Surface, so the only real selling point is the Surface hardware and form factor.
CONCLUSION
The Surface line continues to shine. This is an extremely portable, great looking piece of hardware that will go for several workdays. It’s a capable performer, and will tackle 90% of all tasks the average person might throw at it, with ease. It’s just a shame the keyboard, pen, and a charging brick wasn’t included.

This is an excellent tablet that comes with a full Windows 11 operating system. It offers great value for its price, is extremely portable, and is incredibly fast. It efficiently completes tasks and has a long battery life that lasts all day.

The Surface Pro Copilot+ 12-inch tablet arrived in a compact, modern-looking box that screams premium. It just feels nice in your hands, a good sign that what’s inside will be equally nice! There’s not a lot included in the box, just the tablet, a USB-C charging cable, and a couple little paper inserts, including one that identifies all the buttons and directs you to a webpage for additional setup support. No wall plug included, which is fine with me.. I’ve already got way too many of those lying around, and I’m happy to contribute toward reducing unnecessary waste. Even the packaging itself looks and feels like it’s made from fully recyclable materials, which I always appreciate. The device was nestled perfectly, easy to pull out, no annoying plastic, and ready to go.
Once I had it in my hands, the first thing I noticed was how lightweight and thin it is. It just feels really nice, sturdy, strong, all metal and glass.. Cool to the touch. The finish is smooth, and everything about it screams quality to me. It’s sleek and minimal but packs a mighty punch. The kickstand on the back folds out beautifully and holds at nearly any angle you want. I’ve been using it everywhere and the kickstand works not only for your desk, but in bed, on my lap, on one leg, etc, and it stays stable and holds its position really well. The hinge is so smooth, it pops out then glides into places, and then when closing it there is a subtle click that secures it into place, flush with the tablet, almost unnoticeable. Very well designed.
Setting it up was pretty standard for a Windows machine, though there were a couple of new options. The Copilot feature stood out right away, basically an AI assistant built into Windows, and there was another option where you can enable snapshots of your screen taken every few seconds. That sounded cool, but I skipped it for now. Might go back and try it later. Everything else about the setup was familiar, location settings, updates, and login, and went pretty quickly.
The tablet powers on quickly, and the screen is gorgeous. It’s a 12-inch PixelSense display with sharp detail and stunning color. Even though it’s not OLED, it could have fooled me, because it look fantastic. Brightness is good and I haven’t had any issues using it in different lighting around the house. Touch response is excellent, and everything feels fluid and fast. The scrolling is really smooth, wish is probably because of the 90Hz refresh rate. The device is completely fanless, which makes it totally silent. No hum, no buzzing, just quiet, and as far as I know, that’s not very common for a Windows device. Even under heavier use, the tablet hasn’t gotten hot.
Performance-wise, I’ve been really impressed. It runs on the Snapdragon X Plus chip with 16GB of RAM, and I’ve had no trouble running multiple apps, streaming, browsing with tons of tabs open, and even some light editing work. So far it handles it all smoothly without any issues. I haven’t run into any crashes or freezing, and it feels really fast. You probably wouldn’t want to game on this unless you’re cloud gaming or playing something casual, but for everyday tasks, it’s solid. Battery life has been perfect for me, honestly better than I expected. I’ve been getting two to three days of light to moderate use in the evenings, on a single charge.
The speakers sound pretty good for a tablet. They get loud enough for me, and I’ve watched lots of videos on it without feeling like I needed better sound.. The front-facing camera works well for video calls, and it supports facial recognition for logging in, which works really well and I’m starting to love. I haven’t used the rear camera much, but I’m glad that it’s available for when I’m traveling or if I just need to grab a quick pick on this device. There are two USB-C ports for charging, data, and video, which is perfect for my needs. I connected it to my external monitor, and it looked great and performed just fine. Everything scaled well, and there were no issues.
Copilot has quickly become one of my favorite things about using this tablet. I love being able to ask it questions, have it summarize stuff for me, help write messages or posts, and even search for things faster. If you’re not familiar with Copilot yet, I highly recommend spending some time with it. It’s an easy way to start incorporating AI into your everyday workflow, and I think it’s only going to get more useful as time goes on. I’ve always been a fan of AI tech, mostly for art and video creation, but I’ve been trying to use it for other things as well, and it’s exciting to see it built into a tablet making it so easily available.
Overall, I’m really happy with this device. The Surface Pro Copilot+ 12-inch has easily become my favorite tablet to carry around. Whether I’m heading out for a quick trip, visiting a friend, or just moving around the house, I always want to take it with me. It’s lightweight, quie, easy to use and has AI built into it. I can throw it in a bag or backpack without thinking twice, and it feels like the kind of device that’ll hold up well over time. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quality tablet that’s sure to last for many years.

Love it! Very much like using my iPad but with real MS Office! The size is perfect-SO much lighter than a laptop, and can do everything that a laptop can do. When I work at my consulting job, I have an attachment where I can hook it into the monitor, which is really helpful for typing reports. It has long battery life as well, which I like. If I leave it in my work bag for two or three weeks, it’s still charged when I get it out unlike my iPad, which would be dead by the morning. If you get a MS Surface, DO get the cool mouse that matches it. I got the lavender surface, the lavender keyboard that makes it just like a laptop and the mouse.

Fast and snappy performance from the Snapdragon X Plus. Impressed with the various Windows applications it was able to support, did not encounter any issues with my games and softwares in use. Quiet, yet performant.

I have had Surface tablets here and there in the past but always found them to be too heavy and bulky to use as a tablet, which made the form factor pointless for me. The new Surface 12" though is finally light enough to use as a tablet without sacrificing battery and performance like the Surface Go line did. Also, it is big enough for a comfortable keyboard accessory, which was also a downside of the Surface Go. All in all, I am enjoying this device.

I purchased the Surface for school work and has worked great for me. I had to travel while attending online class and this was easier to take with me than a full laptop. Has worked great for all of the required projects and very light weight for what it can do.

Excptional product. Very easy to set up and use for any task. Quick response and the AI features are interactive with correct results. This product is very lightweight and you can take it anywhere and use without connecting issues.
I do suggest using ear buds for clarity in sound when watching movies or on video calls. The display is vivid and exceptional. Overall one of the best products from Microsoft this year.

Lovely quality, easy to use. Love the copilot feature, like chat gpt's sister. It's amazing super lightweight and I could not have asked for a better laptop because my previous one was too big and heavy. Also got the keyboard and pen and it's just an all in all perfect pairing and makes life more convenient. I don't dread opening my laptop now which is something I was aiming for!!

This device is great! If you're a windows user and want something portable that is snappy and has good battery life, this is it! Of course, you will still run into windows OS things like its not as touch friendly or optimized as well as a ipad or android tablet, but it has full windows! This is not a powerhouse for heavy photoshop or video editing but for everything else. Now, if you are not a windows user I would temper the expectations and understand that windows OS is a computer first then a tablet second. But its nice to have the versatility. Onenote is great for type and written notes. Goodnotes is also supported for a write first experience and works well. If you keep those in mind and use it what its intended for, you will have a great experience.

Being a big Microsoft Surface fan (I have owned a SP8, SP9 ARM, and a SP 11 ARM), but wanting a smaller form factor, I picked this up on release day at Best Buy. First off - the color...Ocean is kind of "meh". If that's what the ocean looks like it's more like a Galveston TX beach and not the Caribbean or Hawaiin waters. However, the device itself is awesome. I can't tell a difference performance-wise between it and my SP 11. Both are fast, quiet and handle anything I want to do. It's definitely lighter than the SP 11, smaller, too, but I would have also been happy with a slightly smaller form factor. However, if it had a smaller form factor the keyboard likely would have been cramped. So, great keyboard and typing experience, easily held as a tablet (and the keyboard folds back and is deactivated so you don't have to pull the keyboard off to use it as a tablet), amazing battery-life (it's Thursday, I haven't charged it since I got it Monday, and I still have 41% battery-life), great screen (I can't tell a difference between it and my higher end SP 11). This will be my daily tablet and travel work computer. No need to take a second device with me when on the road!

I am very pleased with the laptop's efficient performance, especially its aptitude for academic work and multitasking. Its dimensions are well-suited for note-taking and other fundamental student activities. Nevertheless, for gaming, a laptop specifically designed for that purpose might be a more appropriate selection. I have noticed that it tends to overheat and battery dies down more quickly only when running downloaded games like Roblox and Honkai Star Rail. Beyond that, it is a laptop that I would suggest for students, given its impressive speed and artificial intelligence capabilities.

I absolutely love my Surface Pro. I wanted something small enough to fit in my purse and carry around for my travel business. It's super lightweight but is as powerful as my last PC. I wasn't looking for the Copilot but now I use it all the time. I highly recommend this, especially for people on the go. They even had it in my favorite color purple.

Bought this for my wife as she has needed a new tablet for her art. She has never experienced any sort of lag while using it every day and finds it much better than her macbook in terms of speed and screen quality.

So far, I am LOVING my Surface Pro. I've had it about a week now and have zero complaints. I'm a PC girl although I considered switching to a MacBook for a moment, but I just couldn't do it. I do have an iPhone. Overall, the functionality and speed are top notch. It's lightweight and fits my personal needs. I am pleased. I love the soft keys of the keyboard and the pen glides across the screen with ease and zero lag.

My wife told me for a couple of years to get a new one and I finally gave in and I am glad that I did. I love it. It's fast and easy to use. Plus got it on sale. Plus with the savings I was able to buy the keyboard. I would highly recommend the Microsoft surface

Absolutely one of my favorite devices ever. I decided to trade in my iPad Air for this and I have zero regrets. It’s bonkers fast, wonderful battery life and actually has a useful OS!

I love this new Surface. I love the color of it and I love how easy it is to use with help from Co-Pilot. It has artificial intelligence built in and I love it. It is so much more advanced then the old Surface I have. The colors are bright and beautiful screen. I am still getting use to the Windows 11 but so far so good, pretty much self explanatory.
