I've had my release XBOX One for about five years, and have gone through at least 8 remotes. The buttons seem to break at the slightest bump, and the internal parts are super cheat (they wear down quickly. creating stick drag, etc). Hopefully things improve with the next gen, but I had only two controllers total with the 360, so it's clearly not me throwing it around.

I prefer going with the Microsoft branded controller over 3rd party. They typically last longer and can withstand an occasional drop or two.

Only complaint is the battery life with these controllers. I have two with the Xbox rechargeable batteries and they last a day of hard gaming.

The controller is good when it’s new stiff and responsive. As long as you don’t drop it a lot. It should last a few years.
