You get access to online multiplayer and unlike Sony's equivalent, the service offers 4 free games per month as opposed to 2. There are also exclusive sales and increased discounts on general sales. Best Buy sent this to my email very quickly and it is a great option for someone who wants to give their friend access to XBOX Live.

In addition to getting to play online multiplayer with friends, a Gold membership also gives you access to new free games each month (up to $700 worth over the course of a year) and deep discounts on Xbox games and add-ons in the Xbox Store.
