There was a very good article online about where the "cheaper" codes come from. They often get shut down. 60 bucks is the going rate. Purchasing them from Microsoft is the same price, but you don't get points. By the way, you get double points if your are a gamer club member which I recommend.

The 12 month membership is convenient because you only need to purchase it once a year at $59.99, as opposed to the monthly cards that cost $9.99, or the 3 month cards that cost $24.99. As a bonus, the Gold Membership often offers discounts on games, or an occasional free game.
