Unfortunately, you need xbox live gold to play with other people online, but it's required and these go on sale occasionally, so it can be had for cheaper than $60 which is nice since it gives you a year to find the right deal. Make sure you read the auto-renew subscription text when entering the card to your account so you don't accidentally get billed if you forget to renew when it expires.
