A must in this day and age. Xbox Live Gold is required to play online, but you can also save your games to the cloud. That's great for if something happens to your console or you sign in to a different console, you don't lose potential hundreds of hours of progress. Also free Games with Gold every month. And at $35 with Gamer's club unlocked, it's a great deal as well.

A Gold membership gives access to online multiplayer, which is great. Microsoft has spent a lot of time really building up their online services, so there's fewer problems with the online multiplayer for them. Aside from allowing online multiplayer, with the discounts and freebies that the Gold members get in the Xbox Live Marketplace, which are similar to the freebies and discounts that PS+ members get through PlayStation, even a card for a month of membership is pays for itself. The longer the membership you get, the higher the return on investment.
