I feel the package was a little deceiving. May be its just me - new to Xbox family.

While we recommend Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for the best Xbox experience, you definitely don't need Xbox Game Pass to enjoy the benefits of Xbox Live Gold. Gold members are able to play their Xbox games online, get up to four free games every month, and enjoy deep discounts on games and apps in the Microsoft Store. Own PS4 and XBOX1s and if going to play online I buy strictly for Xbox since online gameplay and community is so much better. Do think $60 a year is a bit steep, so I usually purchase when it's on sale.
