Essential for quick shortcut access and typing

I loved the original Chatpad on the Xbox 360 so I had to pick this one up. If you also had a Chatpad for the 360, this one is much lighter as the controller itself has a nice weight to it. When you plug it into the controller and power on the console, you'll be prompted for a controller update. Once that's done, you're ready to use it. There is also a one-ear headset included in the box for chat. NOTE: make sure you adjust the volume on the Chatpad so you can hear in-game audio and voice chat at the same time if you game with headphones. I couldn't hear my friends while chatting and thought the Chatpad was bad at first. One thing I noticed about this Chatpad is that with headphones (in my case, the Logitech G430), the in-game audio is much louder compared to connecting headphones directly to the controller and via standard adapter, which is a very good thing. Also, there's two special keys on the Chatpad: X1 and X2. X1 takes quick screenshots and X2 captures the last 30 seconds of Gameplay. Supposedly there will be a system update later in which allows customizing those keys to do what you want. Other than that, all of the keys illuminate and makes typing out messages much faster compared to spamming the d-pad and X button.

    Buyer Beware of Serial Number

I purchased this chatpad and noticed that the special keys weren't typing the image which appeared on the keys. The only time it seemed to work is when I went inyo my Xbox One Settings>Time and Location>Changed my Keyboard Language to Español/Mexico. But doing that prevented me from getting English typing suggestions. After doing a lot of troubleshooting and research, I was informed that the chatpads are country coded by Serial number. There is supposed to be one of the following letters at the end of the serial number which corresponds to the count which it is coded for: B,G, E. E would correspond to English/US (which I need). But the serial number in the one I purchased had no letters, only numbers. Hence, the reason its not working properly for me. Now, I have to go return this chatpad and try to exchange it for one with an E at the end of its serial number. So frustrating that MSFT couldn't just make these things work without this stupid restriction.

I bought a new HyperX Cloud headset that I wanted to use it instead of my wired Xbox chat mic. I also have a newer controller with the 3.5mm jack that I was able to plug straight into. I got tired of having to open menus up to adjust the volume, so I went to buy the stereo headset adapter. Through a little research I found that I would lose the mic monitoring (look it up if you don't know what it is - I had to) feature. Apparently this feature is disabled if you use the stereo headset adapter, but not if you just plug the headphone jack straight into the controller - weird. My only options that retained mic monitoring were the Turtle Beach stereo adapter, the chat pad, or the HyperX Cloud Pro which had an inline volume control. The chat pad was the cheapest option, so I went with it and I am glad I did. I didn't think I would use the keypad much, but I am finding myself typing a lot more messages to my friends or recent players. I originally bought this as an open box for $5 off MSRP. When I tried to use it, it wouldn't fit into the controller - either of my controllers actually. The pins wouldn't line up, so it was likely a manufacturing defect. So I returned it, and got another one that fit perfectly.

I use an elite controller. So, my opinion is based off that controller.... The chatpad definitely does what it's designed to do: alleviate the frustrations of using your controller's analog sticks to tediously select letters off the on-screen keyboard when entering text into your xbox .... but if you plan (like did) to just leave chat pad in your controller forever and game comfortably you might not be 100% satisfied. I think the chatpad makes the controller heavy and clunky and more awkward and uncomfortable to hold. This isn't very noticeable until you're gaming hard and you realize it's hurting your hands to hold the controller in such an awkward way...That being said I also took the paddles off the back of the elite controller because they weren't extremely useful for the games I am currently playing and they also feel a bit awkward...but this is all my opinion and others may have different experiences. All in all, I think the chatpad is great to plug in when a text screen appears and it becomes useful ... but it's not the most comfortable and it doesn't match up well with other headsets besides the one it comes with...it comes with a standard chat headset with a single ear piece... I tried plugging in my turtle beach XO one headset and it gave very poor/fuzzy sound quality ... other headsets may work but I was a bit sore that the xo one headset didn't compute well with the chatpad.

    Great for writing messages quickly

I get messages a few times a day/week that I dread responding to because I hate moving the joystick around to each character. Writing a message one letter at a time can be tedious(depending on how long the message is) and can be extremely frustrating; if you accidentally back out before sending a message thus losing the entire message. Sure I can take out my smartphone and use the smartglass app but I am lazy, to be frank. This chatpad simplified things for me in every aspect of writing message via controller. I like the added weight it adds to the controller, make it feel more secure in my hands. The special customizable buttons are great too, especially if you link them to taking screenshots or recording clips. The only gripe I have is that when I hit the mute button(mic mute) while my headset is plugged in, then proceed to un-mute, my mic doesn't get turned back on. Leading me to unplug my headset and plug it back in. Not much of a hassle but I am lazy. Maybe I got a defective version but who knows. I have neither the time nor persistence to go on an exchanging spree to get one that won't have the same problem. All in all, great product for gamers who are tired of using their joystick to pick characters individually and those want a little more customizability.

I purchased this device so I can type into a web browser instead of using the pointer one letter at a time. This poorly designed chat pad just would not fit into any of my remotes. I read reviews later and they had the same problem. I tried putting it in every possible manner with no results. I broke one remote in the process. (The connector piece get pushed in so nothing else can plug into it.) In the past, this was more critical because of no headphone jack unless you got a separate device. Bottom line, this is designed for the older style remote controllers. I took it back to Best Buy and the technician was able to put chat pad into one of my remote controllers. I would suggest that you bring your controller with you when you buy this to make sure it fits. As far as chatting is concerned, it's about as easy as texting on an old flip phone. I left the chat pad connected to one of the remotes, since I didn't want to remove it and break the other remote. I then got an old wired keyboard and plugged it into the Xbox and it works great.

For starters, I love a chatpad (or used to). The first one I used was on the Xbox 360 and it basically became a part of my controller in usefulness and comfort. I had to have it on my controller whenever and whatever I was playing. It was snug, it WAS a part of the gaming experience for me. Now it's years after the release of the XBOX ONE and this has just been released, so don't tell me they haven't had time to perfect an already decent idea. The headphone jack that's built in is ridiculous. It's inconsistent and I constantly have to adjust the headphone's wire (newer headphones, Turtle Beach, decent) to get it to stay working... the chatpad IS a nice keyboard and although it's not as cozy a fit as the 360 version, it does add the handy options of party chat volume vs game volume...when the headphone jack isn't being wonky. I own 2 of these now, both are having issues here and there. My headphones aren't the problem as I've tested them with other consoles and such. Needs a hotfix or patch soon.

So the Xbox One chatpad, it’s pretty much an updated 360 chatpad and works perfect for quickly typing out messages or searching things on the Xbox, another bonus is being able to control volume/mute of any headset that is plugged into the 3.5mm port in the bottom and it has two extra buttons that are assigned to screenshots and recording but can be changed to whatever you want. Overall does what advertised. Now the bad, this is my third chatpad. First one for my original white One S controller but would not go onto my black controller that came with my X so I had to get it exchanged twice before I got one that fit, I’m assuming a revision or issue with the mold. You do have to finagle a little bit to get it on but once it is secured you are good to go!

As much as I loved the 360 version of this chat pad, and ended up buying one for every controller, this version is a couple of steps back. First it just doesn't lock onto the controller as snuggly as the previous did. Granted, there are no screw holes in this controller for the pad to "grip" into. However it doesn't even mold as smoothly to the controller. The sharp angles at the bottom around the grip are constantly irritating my fingers as they wrap down over. Even on the top, it's raised far above the controller and has sharp edges/angles that distract from the sexy smooth feel of the previous model. It does its job, for the most part, however I find it slow to picking up initially on some screens when typing.. Often having to press a button twice to get it to initially begin working. Otherwise it works well and Is better than having to use the onscreen keyboard all of the time.

I got this mainly so I could use my headphones that worked on my 360 on my new xbox one. The added bonus was the new ease of typing in codes since I don't have a kincect one. Works as well as the version I used on my 360 keypad. You do have to download new software to your controller to use it so make sure you have that cord handy before putting it on the controller. I didn't use the headphones that came with it for any real length of time but when I tried to use it instead of my turtle beach headphones for about 20 seconds it was really awful. I decided to put more effort into finding my other pair than to continue using it. Still a good purchase for the keypad and ability to use whatever gaming headphones you want without buying the special xbox one version plus you get an emergency headphone if that breaks. I'm sure it will do the trick for a night if you have no other options.

I read a bunch of reviews online about this chatpad not easily fitting onto the controller. It fits my 3 controllers just fine. I have two older controllers (the standard one and a midnight forces one) that I bought in Aug 2015 as well as a covert forces controller that has the new design (with the headphone jack). It fits all 3 just fine. My kid yanks the chatpad on and off of his midnight forces controller all the time without issue. It's a quality piece. All the buttons have a nice feel and they are backlit. It is 'hot swap-able' meaning you can take it on or off the controller in the middle of a game and it continues to work fine. You certainly don't have to restart games or refresh anything if you leave it off, then put it on in the middle of a game to enter text.

Apparently each chat pad is specific to each country. I’m in the US and expected a US chatpad. I received a chatpad for Spain and had to change my language to Spanish (which I don’t speak unfortunately) to get the keyboard to apply the correct letters and symbols when pressed. Even after changing the language to match the chatpad I received 27 of the symbols weren’t correct. When pressing the key on the chat pad, it would show a different symbol or not even work. Before you ask, yes I updated both the controller and the chatpad. Nothing helped. Thanks for the wrong country hat pad Best Buy!

I was waiting for a deal to come along on this, but it looks like it's not going to happen. This is a great item. It fits the controller well and gives me access to volume and chat functions without having to go to the menu. Sometimes I'm in a party chat with my friends, but we're not playing the same game, so when I want to hear the game audio, I can dial that in with a few presses on the pad rather than opening the side menu. The keyboard saves time over the onscreen version, but it takes some getting used to when using the alternate functions, such as finding the parentheses and other symbols. It's backlit, but it's not constant. Pressing any key activates it, so it isn't distracting.

It makes the time of trying to type out text and usernames on the Xbox way quicker for ease of use. The chat pad also has a feature to mute your microphone when you need to and case a volume changer for your headset and a shifting button for between game volume and party volume. The chat pad also has a large variety of symbols and has the same effieciency of typing on a keyboard. Overall this is a very time saving product that works with ease. Note: you can only hear voices in the headset that comes with it. So, invest in better headphones if you want the ability to hear the game as well.

Works great no problems plugging into xbox one controller and headphone is decent if you don't have a headset mic, I'd prefer a real Surround sound headset w/ mic but that is just my opinion. Typing on the chat pad is better then entering it through the controller which saves a lot of time. Most noticeable if your in a multiplayer match and need to type something real fast so you can get back into the action that is when the chat pad is well worth the buy. If your not on xbox live and don't hardly play multiplayer matches then the chat pad really isn't needed or unless you use xbox one for social network then yes it would be worth the buy.

This let's you talk smack on the Xbox one, and allows you to assign functionality to different buttons. I use it to take screenshots and videos of me pwning noobs. 4 stars because I've noticed that sometimes the remote doesn't turn on my Xbox when I have this attached to my remote. It could be an issue with the XB1, but the remote ends up working when I take off the chatpad. I had also bought this because the headphones were not working from my remote, so I thought I could use this to connect my headphones into it so I could use the mic. Didn't solve my issue, but it is likely unrelated. Bottom line, great buy, and I recommend it.

I can't believe I'd never purchased a chatpad before and I know for sure I never will go without again. Scrolling through on-screen alphabets is so annoying and extremely time consuming and this chatpad works like a breeze. Incredibly responsive, especially for fast typers. It does take some getting used to because it manages to fit 3 characters (alphabet, symbol, and more) onto each key. It fits comfortably in your hand while you play and doesn't make the controller feel bulky or clunky. headphone jack included makes it a great choice over just a headset adaptor. Really love this item.

I was bummed when I originally got the chatpad for the 360, only to find out it doesn't work. Fast forward to today, and I decided to buy it. Compared it to the 360 chatpad, and it's much slimmer, and a bit lighter. Very useful for Final Fantasy XIV, allows me to chat without having to reach down, pull out my keyboard tray, and type a message. I do however need some time to adjust to key layout. Bonus Points: If you are using with an Elite controller, it will fit inside the case, while still attached to the controller.

I extensively reviewed the Chatpad before purchasing. I had one for my XBox 360 that was great and wanted the same quality. I saw 2 issues reported repeatedly: 1. It is hard to connect to the controller and 2. You and your online teammates can hear the static from your headset. I can say that I had almost no issue connecting the Chatpad. It just takes a few seconds to lineup the connections. As far as the headset, the static is unbearable. Fortunately, the Chatpad provides a standard headset jack, so I plugged in the headset that came with my phone. I hear virtually no static. So, there is a generally cheap fix.

I had a chat pad for a couple years in order for headsets to work with older xbox one controllers. This alone is silly as the controllers shouldn't require an adapter to use a headset. The chat pad finally died (sound came through but no mic) this spring. I bought a new one Mar 4th. By April 14th it was dead. No mic going through. Did trouble shooting with different controllers and headsets and still not working. These things should not die so easily if they are required for older controllers to function with a headset. Very frustrated!
