Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the engaging gameplay, compelling story, and innovative Nemesis System in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Many also praise the game's beautiful open world and responsive controls. However, some players find the difficulty challenging, and a few note limited replayability after completing the main story. The game's strengths clearly outweigh its weaknesses for most players.

Fun game but no multiplayer, and mediocre graphics doesn't make it to worth $60

    2014's Game of the Year

Middle Earth: Shadow or Mordor is easily the best game I played that came out in 2014, and one of the best games I've played in some time. The game takes place in the Lord of the Ring's universe, but the characters are completely different with the exception of 2 (and one is really just some fanservice). You play as Talion, a ranger, avenging the death of your wife and son. The story is fine, but the gameplay is what really shines here. There are Uruks, and above Uruks are Captains, Elite Captains, Warchiefs, and Veteran Warchiefs. When you get killed, the enemy gets promoted up the ranks. This means you could get killed by a random, non-ranked enemy, and given enough time, he could end up as a Veteran Warchief, the highest honor. What better way to avenge your death than killing him, now as a Warchief? The game is centered around learning new abilities and completing quests, mostly killing as many Uruks as possible. The one downside is that you have to learn crowd control because it is easy to get swarmed by enemies, but the more abilities you unlock, the easier this gets. Great game! Fairly easy to platinum too, if you're into that sort of thing. I've played around 26 hours total and have beaten the game plus earned the platinum trophy. Probably could have done it faster, but I was enjoying just messing around too much.

Best Game I Played in 2014

The gameplay in this game is amazing, similar to the Batman: Arkham games. The nemesis system is something that I've never seen done before in a game, and something that other games need to steal and use in their own game. The graphics are great as well. I'd highly recommend buying this game, even if you have no knowledge or interest in the Tolkien story.

When I first heard about Shadows of Mordor I was interested as I'm a huge fan of Western RPG style games. To my surprise this game surpassed any expectations I previously had. The gameplay is top notch, I'm sure you've heard the combat is Batman Arkham style, booo eeep, boo eeep, boo eeep, Arkham style. You can scale building like in Assassin's Creed also. Add all these elements in to one game along with a dark story plot and you have the makings of a AAA title. Note this game is not for the kids so do your research before you purchase this for your kids. Lot's of gore and beheadings to be had here. The Nemesis system is awesome, it's very in depth and fun to watch how orks move about the ranks and you find Captin's strengths and weaknesses. By far one of the best next gen games I've played this year.

    Best looking game for PS4

This game is absolutely stunning! Hard to find a better looking game out there. The story is interesting enough but where it really shines also is the combat mechanics and the nemesis system. Combat mechanics are a very fluid mixture of the Arkham Batman games and Assassin's Creed. Very fun and gets better and better as you level up and unlocked more abilities. The Nemesis system is different than anything else I've seen. When you're killed by an enemy, they become stronger and move up in ranks and end up remembering you when you meet again. Makes it for a challenging system but that becomes manageable as you learn more moves. Whether you're a stealthy player or "guns full blazing", you will love this title even if you don't like the Lord of the Rings saga/setting.

I'd really give this a 4 1/2 stars, but since we can't do that, I'll just give that as an explanation. Still haven't gotten as far as I'd have liked, but what I've encountered so far, I've thoroughly enjoyed. I'll admit, originally this game wasn't high on my list. With the exception of War in the North, the LotR games have often been (there was a strategy game I'm forgetting the title of,# lacking in nearing anything Peter Jackson has managed with the films. Still, when I heard of the game, I had a glimmer of hope, especially for something to keep building up my PS4 library. Then... The early quotes from one of my normally trusted sites began, and they made it sound rather average. Shortly thereafter, I put this on my list of "games I'm not saving for," list. After its release, Shadow started getting great review after great review, and while I hadn't planned on getting it, I chose it as a birthday gift from my wife. It's gorgeous, has solid gameplay, wonderful voice-acting, and the nemesis system is just wonderful. #Wound one of the "named" bad guys, and his scars or missing limbs will carry over the next time you meet him. Get defeated by a nemesis, and they'll remember that and taunt you the next time you meet, they'll earn promotions within the Uruk army.# It makes this game feel like it has a living, breathing world in which most of your actions and encounters have real repercussions. Now, my 2 biggest complaints aren't HUGE complaints- in fact, they're more personal issues with the game that affect very few people... But, I happen to be one of them. 1# It's open-world. Mind you, I don't dislike open-world games, but it has a side-effect with me.. I need to convince myself to put the game in. It's not so much a "daunting" task, it's that I never feel as if, #even if I had a whole day,# I have enough time to enjoy it. It's so easy to get wrapped up in side missions in this type of game, that a whole play session can be lost without ever advancing the story, and for some reason, this somehow minimizes my enjoyment more often than not. I WANT to love OW games... I buy them like crazy, #every GTA, past 3 Saints Rows, all the Elder Scrolls games, AC, for example,# and more often than not, I begin the game, then set it aside after very little time- in some cases an hour or less, only to not pick it back up again. If OW games cause anything similar to what I feel with them, please be forewarned. 2) This game plays nearly identical to Assassins Creed: Black Flag. It's not exactly my favorite style of character control. While the fighting system is certainly fun, #and occasionally mildly complicated, but it may be due to me having set the game down for a couple weeks while I finished another game off,# I'm not a huge fan of the parkour style movement... It's still a newer system to me- AC4 was a game I first began experiencing it with, and another game that I set aside to play some other, more familiar style games. It's not an atrocious system... it just doesn't feel.. natural to me, but something I suspect will change as I play both games with more frequency. Both of these "cons" are minimal, and as stated, are both really on me pushing some of the things I'm familiar and comfy with. Unless you have serious issues with either, they shouldn't stop you from purchasing what is easily the best LotR experience in gaming. And hopefully, this nemesis system is something we'll all be treated to in the future with other games. Watching as lieutenants and captains fall by your blade, only to be replaced by other Uruks, each given a unique personality, history, and memory, is truly something that makes the game seem alive.

Beautiful game, interesting story for LoTR fans, and best LoTR game I have played. It has similar game play mechanics to recent batman titles. Though I find myself liking it more this go around. In my top 5 games for 2014

This game takes what works best from 2 games, and puts it all in one. That is the big takeaway myself, and others have when playing this game. And that's not a bad thing, not in the slightest If you love the fighting and open world of the Batman Arkham and Assassin's Creed series then this is the game for you, as it takes the best of both of those games, adds it to it's own positives to the mix, and creates an overall positive and enjoyable package. The story is interesting, especially if you enjoy Lord of the Rings lore, and every character you come across is well acted. Combat is more similar to the Arkham games than Assassin's Creed, it's just as slick and fluid with more enjoyable finishers (you can cut head's off, instead of knocking them out). In the game you are eventually given access to the games unique nemesis system, which shows you which Orcs (or as they're called in-game, Uruks) are in power and their rank. It really is something that you'll have to experience for yourself, but is something that I've never seen in a game before. Just give the game a chance if you aren't sure after watching some gameplay, it's really well polished and enjoyable once you understand the combat and nemesis system.

Hard to get the hang of it at first but after you die a few times and figure out all the button combos, this game is fun. There is some strategy to this game, it makes you think a little bit. It's more than just a hack and slash game. The only thing i want to gripe about is that the game is gets repetitive when there are large groups of enemies and when you attack an enemy it takes multiple hits with your sword, than at the same time another guy is trying to attack you so you have to counter that. you cant just focus on one enemy for more than a second. Other than this, the game is nothing but fun. 100% recommend this game.

This game blends the combat of the Arkham games with some elements of the AC series to great results. The nemesis system is a total game changer and has to be experienced to truly appreciate how groundbreaking it is. Couldn't recommend this game more. It has a strong story and the gameplay is great and varied.

I LOVE Lord of The Rings! When I heard the game was coming, I pre-ordered it. I never pre-order games. This one does not disappoint. It's open box and so very wonderful. Everything about this game is great. It's very open ended so you can attack the story line however you choose. Every now and then, my friends and I will start a new game and see how far we can get without being stopped by a top enemy in the game. Plus you know, Lord of the Rings.

This is a great game; a lot of fun to play. Game play is in the world of Tolkein but does not take place during any of the books; you aren't enacting a story line that is forced into the story of the books or the movies; so you are freer to do what you will within the game structure. Action is great and well thought out and game play and battle is spirited. You'll love this game

I was a little skeptical about this game, but got it on the cheap during "black friday" week. This game definitely deserves all of the "game of the year" hype. A cross between Assassin's Creed and The Batman "Arkham" series, takes the best of both games and adds in the "Nemesis" system. Graphics are great, gameplay is good, dialogue is interesting. Overall superb game.
