You know, there's been a change in gaming. The age of people fussing over sequels not being as good as the first of things can't apply to gaming. Shadow of War is further proof of that fact. It expands on everything that made Shadows of Mordor great, without overwhelming the player with a lot of foolishness. Every quest, whether it be a main quest or side quest, feels important. Gravitas that has the player really feeling like the world is closing in on them. The ork soldiers in this game are both hilarious and frightening. They ambush you whilst you're trying to move from one section of the map to another. They are each very tricky and have a set of weaknesses and strengths that players can use to turn situations to their favor. The recruitment system is great as well, giving the player the choice to utilize a new recruit to fight for them immediately, retreat to their base, or even spy on their current ork war chief and betray him when you attack. It's a really cool concept that provides all manner of treachery happening throughout the game. The music is fantastic as well. Chill-inducing soundtrack. The story it carries, in my opinion, could easily be made into a series for television that would rake in the dough. Combat feels great, with the execution attacks leaving foes with limbs and heads bouncing across the terrain. Other enemies flee in terror at the sight of their captain falling from player's blades. Very satisfying game. If you've played the Shadow of Mordor entry, you owe it to yourself to continue the story. This game is awesome.

On the highest difficulty the game becomes a real game in my veteran opinion. I’ve gone through more than half the game fairly easily on the highest difficulty, the challenge begins to happen when the nemesis system takes its effect and levels of your enemies to be able to give you a sense of a struggle. Especially when certain enemies are combine with captains with difficult counters to get past. The game will give you a great sense of accomplishment and achievement once you pass obstacles that took you more than 1 try and it feels even more rewarding knowing the game is on the highest difficulty, as if you’ve transcended into greatness or into a new form. This game goes above and beyond at some points. The so speeches do get bothersome at some points as some so drag out the speaks with long pauses or pondered pauses to spew illogical distorted sentences due to being drunk or just plain stupid. The auto pull up of some of the pick up items is also an annoying feature, but manageable as long as you don’t pick them up in the middle of battle.

A great sequel, marred by a poor final act

Fans of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor will be likely to enjoy this sequel. Shadow of War improves upon many elements of the previous installment. You will find new ways to power up your character such as finding higher level weapons and armor, and stones to add bonuses to said items. You can also build up your orc army's power in a number of ways in order to improve your chances of success in the attacks and defense of each region that will occur throughout the game.
Combat is very similar to the previous installment, which is a good thing. You'll dodge and counter attacks by pressing the corresponding button when on screen prompts appear throughout combat. You'll have a variety of different special attacks which will increase as you level up your character, including fire, frost, and poison based attacks. This keeps combat fresh throughout the game, as well as giving you more tools to defeat tougher opponents.
By far, the worst part of the game is the final act of the game. During this act, you will defend the regions you've conquered throughout the game numerous times. So many times that it becomes a boring grind. I'm not sure if this act was included to extend the hours of gameplay, or to increase the chances that people will spend real money on the game's infamous loot boxes, but either way, the whole act seems quite pointless.
Overall a solid game, and I would recommend it. Honestly the final act of the game is so poorly done that I considered giving the game a 3 star rating instead of a 4 star rating, but I thought that would be a bit too harsh.

This is one of those games that you can play for months and not get tired of. Combat is fantastic,, skill progression is fun and fair, and the nemesis system has really made some unique and incredible stories. Also? Don't worry about micro transactions or loot boxes. They're not necessary in the slightest (the game is better if you ignore them honestly) but if you want them you make more than enough of the in game currency to get a whole bunch of boxes if you want.

I was hoping this game would improve upon the original which was lots of fun. Man was i not disappointed. Great action. Interesting story. The nemesis system has never been better. Interacting with the orcs is always a treat and killing them in fun ways always gives you an excellent adrenaline rush which keeps you going. A must get for any LOTR fan.

Take Shadow of Mordor's greatest mechanics, awesome fighting system, storyline and character upgrade system and polish it off with an even more in depth Nemesis system, gear and graphics (4K for some lucky gamers :) ). I give this game a 9/10 because I have still yet to scratch the surface to make a fully committed 9.5 or 10+ rating. It is fantastic and so expansive! You can spend hours on end simply running side missions and collecting artifacts and still be entertained with all the different boss battles, challenging enemies and great fighting mechanics. Once you build your character with proper defense and offense perks you can see how well certain upgrades work well together and some don't. Highly replayable, highly valuable title and a fantastic sequel to an already great original! ENJOY IT! I know I am :)

Great sequel to a great game. Improves on the nemesis system and has a decent story. Though it keeps going after the ending and without buying loot boxes can be difficult to get through. But you still get a complete game before that point.

The developers took everything that was good about Shadow of Mirror (combat and nemesis system) and made it even better. This time around, there is way more story and it doesn't feel as repetitive.

Besides completely going non-canon in the end the story is great, gameplay is as good as ever, and the nemesis system is improved. The sieges are fun, and overall the game is great, if not slightly repetitive.

The first game won many Game Of The Year Rewards, deservedly in my opinion. This sequel makes that game look like a tech demo. I do not know how they made so many improvements for this game. Don't let the ability to buy loot boxes scare you away, I have fantastic gear and I earn it all frequently and with ease just through playing. Of every game I've ever played with micro transactions, this is the only one I've felt neither pressured nor like I'm missing out when I don't buy one. You can earn crates easy, which gets you the gear and XP, DO NOT BE AFRAID. So, so much fun, a must have for any LOTR fan who isn't suuuper strict with canon.

If you loved the original Shadow of Mordor you will love this game. The game mechanics are very similar, and all the familiar characters plus new ones. There are upgraded skills with a new, more customizable skill tree. Some of the animations have changed, for the better in my opinion. A new armor setup provides more customizable upgrades and different looks. The mobs have different skills also so gameplay maintains a respectable challenge, plus the addition of DRAKES to interact with!! Fighting Nazgul is pretty good too. The game world is much bigger than the original game.
I have not completed the game yet so I don't have all the info, but it is definitely fun to spend some time slaughtering orcs or bending them to my will!
I think the development team did a great job keeping all the things we loved about the original and adding enough new stuff to make it interesting. Good job on a sequel game!
One thing I have heard mixed reviews on, and have not experienced, is the new online interaction features. There's now a market to buy special upgrades, characters, kits, etc... kind of like the supply drops in COD. You can spend real money, or in game money to purchase. I am not a fan of this feature, so I don't use it and it's not intrusive to the game play that I've noticed at all. Another online feature is the ability to avenge other players' deaths at the hands of orcs, and attack other players' fortresses. These features are pretty neat, even if there is no direct interaction with the other players, their game environment can feed your storyline. There is no negative impact to their game or yours when performing these interactions.

A Good Game But Has Defects

There's a lot going for this game and the first two acts are pretty good. Unfortunately, the final half of the game is an enormous, tedious grind to collect more and more Orcs and level them all up.
There are loot box micro transactions and the developers assured everyone before release that the game had been balanced/designed around NOT using them but having played the game, I can now confirm they lied. That horrendous, boring grind at the end of the game is clearly there to strong-arm people into buying those loot boxes.
There is also a multiplayer mode but it is basically unplayable unless you're sinking lots of money into those boxes because your Orcs can permanently die in that mode so without the loot boxes, you'll need to do hours of grinding in single player between multiplayer matches to replenish your Orcs.
First few hours were great but I got the game yesterday & I'll probably be selling it back come the weekend because I'll be done with it by then.
Knowing what I know now, I would have given this one a miss.

If you love the first game then you will love this one. Not only does it take the game but build on to it with a better system and more RPG elements. This game is huge and long so that will start to take a toll on you over the course of time. If you are like me and have ADHD you will get bored over the course of time just doing the same thing over and over.
Loot crates. Unfortunately, I did not really have really issue with the loot crate system but have been told that in the later part of the game it that loot crate's speed things up.

Aside from the combat and variety of animations, nothing about this game is amazing. However, every part (sound, writing, voice acting and story) are at least good, with a few components (combat, control is and the army system) coming in at very good. The package as a whole though, rises above the sum of its parts because no aspect of the game under delivers to hold it back. The micro transaction loot boxes are a waste and completely useless, but also completely able to be ignored without impeding your progress.
