Not Ready for Prime Time & Issues with Roku App

I am very disappointed by this product. I waited faithfully until this came out and rushed out to buy it when Best Buy this morning. I brought it home, attached the cable, went through the process of hooking it up to my wifi, and started the channel scan. I didn't get any channels, so I moved the antenna several times over the course of an hour. All of a sudden, I was getting NO channels. I scanned and rescanned to no avail. Then I noticed the cable which connects the antenna to the power bridge had BROKEN. See the included photo. I didn't abuse it, I merely moved it around maybe 5 times trying to get more channels. The cable is FLIMSY. What's more, due to the design, unless you have a very narrow coaxial cable to substitute for that flimsy cable, you will NOT be able to connect a regular-thickness coaxial cable to it easily. Luckily I had one, and I substituted it in after some working at it. I was able to install the Amazon Firestick Mohu app and got the antenna working. However, it DOES NOT work on the Roku. I also bought a brand new Streaming Stick+ and went to Mohu's site in order to get the Roku app; it's not in the Roku store. Anyway, I got that app installed and when I open the app on the Roku, I get "Error! Unable to connect to network. Please check your connection and try again." There is NOTHING wrong with the connection; if it connected via the Amazon Firestick, then there's nothing wrong with the connection. However, the experience on the Firestick was good, and I loved the guide, so hat is why I give this a 2 star rating. However, I am a geekette, and if I had problems with this, I can imagine the problems anyone less technically inclined will have. Oh, and it is NOT compatible with 5G networks. I am calling Mohu tomorrow about these issues and see if the Roku app will be fixed and if they will replace the flimsy cable just in case. If both don't happen, this is going to be returned.

Finally a free local TV solution for my Apple TV and Roku! I setup the Airwave and connected to my network with my mobile phone. Once it was connected to WiFi, it was simple to use the Mohu TV App to finish entering my zip code and scan the channels. I received over 40+ local channels and found some extras like NASA TV and Bloomberg TV. Mohu TV has allowed me to fully cut the cord.

After seeing the CES awards for the Mohu Airwave, I could not wait to get it! I purchased online from Bestbuy (when the Airwave was finally available) and I received the unit in 4 days, unpacked, and noticed no installation instructions. I checked online at gomohu.com, found basic directions and proceeded to install with my Roku as the interface device to my 60 inch TV. Hookup was pretty easy, I located the Airwave black box and 120V adaptor near my wireless router, the antenna about 2ft away on a high shelf inside my utility/equipment closet. Next I found that my Roku account was still registered to an old email so I changed the account information then uninstalled the Roku and re-installed to get the right connection/account details. Following this I could not get the "Mohu" icon to activate or scan for channels even though it displayed on the Roku. I contacted Mohu support and they were very helpful, I learned that my Roku was at firmware level 3.1 (approx 2013, not supported anymore) and would not work properly with the Airwave. I found a cheap new version of the Roku online, ordered and installed several days later- after re-registering with Roku again. The Airwave application immediately started working and started the channel scan. The antenna is definitely quite sensitive, I accumulated 64 channels after about 10 minutes of scanning! Previously with a conventional wall mounted antenna (Mohu Leaf) hooked directly to the TV I only got 34-40 channels. It is obvious that Mohu has done their homework with the Airwave antenna, it must have some magical "radio wave magnets" built into it! I also found the interface (using Roku) quite nice with channel line-up, description, etc... The Mohu icon simply displays along with Netflix, Amazon, etc on the TV (via Roku). I wish the text was slightly larger when viewing the channel lineup, I cannot see or read the small text easily. Most of the Local channels (approx 90%) displayed crystal clear in high definition! Switching between the Mohu and Netflix, Amazon, etc was painless as well using the Roku interface and controller. I suspect that anybody who carefully installs the airwave will be highly pleased with the ease of use, performance, and great Mohu support. I recommend trying this product if you have good broadcast signals in your area and want to "cut the cord" to a great extent.

    So Long Cable!

I am officially cutting the cord with my new AirWave! I was waiting all year for this product and it did not disappoint. A friend of mine turned me on to a website, untangle.tv, where I first found out about Mohu and what I needed to cut the cord. I found out what streaming device I needed and what services I needed to still watch my shows without cable. I had tried a couple other antennas in the past, and became a Mohu fan after trying their Leaf product. I used an antenna for a couple bedrooms where I did not have cable connections. I learned that if you spend a little extra time tweaking them, it pays off. To see real HD over the air for sports is amazing! I would not consider myself a techie, so I was a little concerned about setting up the airwave. I got on line and followed the steps. It was a little clumsy getting through all of it, but all in all it was not too bad. With the antenna being wireless, I was able to set it up close to a window to try and get the best reception. I picked up a new Roku Express at Best Buy too for my streaming device. After scanning, it picked up about 40 channels, but some were not that strong. I scanned a second time and still had the same results. I found the info on their site about going to the menu and switching the Clearpix manually. The skies parted!!! It took a little while to do it, but it was really worth it. What I absolutely love about this product is the program guide. That’s one thing I missed when using an antenna before. The other thing I really like is that you don’t have to go back to the TV to switch the input between the antenna and the Roku. I love being able to use my Roku remote for it all. The streaming channels are good, but I have got to believe that they will expand the number of them. I also think they could make it a little easier to do the initial update. According to their website, that will be changing. I love that it will keep updating in the future. I think this is a first of a kind product. It is allowing me to cut the cord completely for TV. Even though there were a few bugs I had to get through that might put my rating at a little over 4, I have to give Mohu credit for what they did with this product. I would recommend it with 5 stars. It is pretty cool that you can only buy it at Best Buy too.

I purchased this item and was not completely hopeful it would be a great product due to the push backs on the release date. Unfortunately that was the case. The towers near my home are roughly 25 miles away so I assumed I could pick up those but the longer shot 45 miles would be iffy. After speaking with Mohu customer service, this antenna only has a range of 30 feet. That would be okay for me, but this did not even pick up the 25 mile channels. The channels I did receive buffer constantly. I tried the antenna in multiple areas and even tried it on top of my home to see if that would work. No luck anywhere. Either no signal, too weak to load a channel it found or extreme buffering. Do not waste your money on this item. When I reached out to customer service they advised me to simply return the item, so return I have.

This review is based on my first impressions. I received the Mohu Airwave this afternoon. Overall, I had it up and running successfully in less than 30 minutes. Easy to unpack and setup. Easy physical setup. Antenna to coax to tuner/power/wifi “brick” to power cord. Fairly straightforward software setup. Get online to: http://www.gomohu.com/setup/airwave/ and follow instructions. It takes 5-10 minutes for the software upgrade and 5-10 minutes to scan for channels. Download the apps. For Amazon Fire products you can get it from the Amazon store or the Mohu Airwave site. For Roku you need to download it from the Mohu Airwave site. So far it’s working fine on both my Fire TV box and Fire TV stick. The good. For the Amazon products I did the scan on 1 and when I set up Mohu on the other I did not need to rescan. The guide and channels loaded pretty quickly and I had minimal channel drops. It scanned 49 channels. The drop outs are no worse than what I get on Hulu Live. The bad. The tuner/power/wifi “brick” is fairly large, heavy and has cooling fins. Not the most elegant design. It should be integrated with the antenna. The coax cable is thin. I had to rescan channels for the Roku 1. It is very slow on my Roku 1. I can load the guide, but the channels play only intermittently. I don't think it's going to work very well on older Rokus (v7.7 software). OTT integration. So far there’s a limited number of OTT channels. Hopefully it will be better if/when they get Hulu, Nexflix, and Amazon.

Great idea, but the execution of the software is still not there. Hooked up was easy, downloaded set up instructions from Mohu site (nothing in the box). Good news; First scan 50 channels. Bad news; almost all of the channels needed to buffer every 5 seconds for about 15 seconds or picture was choppy. Of the 50 channels only 2 are steady and held for over 10 minutes (both local channels). I have a Mohu 30 un-amplified antenna sitting next to the Airwave and it gets 35 channels very clearly with no distortion. This leads me to believe that the problem is with the software and not the antenna. If they can fix the problem this will be a winner, so come on Mohu get the airwave to work at least as well as the Mohu 30.

We bought this antenna to help "cut the cable". Setup was a little quirky but after 2 try's we got it to work. Problem was all tv transmitters were 35 miles or further from our home. Range of this product is about 35 miles so we only got a few channels, not the ones we wanted. We returned it and are installing an external antenna. Do your research on the range you require before purchasing.

I would not recommend this product to anybody just yet because MOHU still has several kinks that they need to work out before putting this out for mass distribution to the public. In a nutshell, my Airwave did not work at all....regardless of where I placed the antenna. The scan would pick up approximately 60 channels(good) but the channels would only play for a second before freezing(bad). I have put mine back in the box and debating whether or not to send it back or hold out to see if MOHU will be able to rectify these issues.

I really wanted this antenna to work and was excited when it was available. I got the first one at my local store. Unfortunately I could never get it set up in my house where several channels wouldn’t constantly buffer. I moved the antenna all around my house with or without being directly plugged into the router. I used a Roku on all of my tv’s so perhaps that’s the issue. I ended up returning the product and bought several hard wired antenna for each tv. I did like the TV guide and would consider this product again if it ended up being a software fix using the Roku.

Tried scanning for channels in the app on a Fire TV stick and found 30 to 50 channels (depending on antenna location). But they couldn't be added to the guide, so they couldn't be watched. Then tried the app on a Roku. After tracking down and installing the app, the channel scan locked up at 53% complete. And no android version to top it off. So it's going back. So disappointed but just couldn't get it to work.

I preordered this antenna as soon as it was announced, with high hopes for use with a TV that is too far from a cable outlet to use without running a coax cable all over our living/dining room and kitchen. After several delays in launch, it finally arrived. The online setup guide was easy to navigate, but a software glitch prevented the scanned channels (which were fairly limited in number anyway) from loading. After a number of calls to Mohu support (quite responsive, pleasant, and willing to acknowledge the problems with this product, even to the point of reminding me to be aware of my return deadline because "we don't want you to be stuck with a product that doesn't work for you"), I waited until the day before that deadline, hoping Mohu would come up with some fixes. When that did not happen, I reluctantly returned the unit to BB and bought a Leaf 50, which works great (I found a location that minimizes the cable run to an acceptable length). If I see clear and convincing evidence down the road that the problems with the AirWave have been solved, I may try again.

Great Concept - Not Ready for Primetime

The AirWave is a great concept, but as initially released it was not ready for prime time. I pre-ordered the AirWave through Best Buy, the exclusive retailer, and it was shipped to me in late September. The unit did not work. I had multiple service calls with engineers from Mohu. They accessed the AirWave's motherboard through my Ethernet and installed a series of software pitches and technical tweaks specific to my router and television configuration. In the end, I was unable to steam from the device, even though the broadcast towers are less than 10 miles from my home. I felt badly for the engineers; they really tried to make the unit work. The same can't be said for Best Buy. The poor performance of the AirWave was only exceeded by the terrible customer service provided by Best Buy. As I said, I had multiple sessions with engineers from Mohu over the course of two weeks. When I took the unit to my nearest Best Buy store in Tysons's Corner, VA for a refund, I was told that that the return/exchange period was only 15 days. I was told I would need to pursue a warranty claim through Mohu. Mohu's policy is they don't provide refunds when a product is purchased through a third-party. I am now stuck with a $150 paperweight. Neither Best Buy nor Mohu will provide a refund. In the future I will be very careful about purchases I make through Best Buy. They sign up as an excusive retailer for cutting-edge products and then fail to make accommodations for refunds/returns when new technology does not perform as advertised.

The build quality is good. Unfortunately, the reception was inadequate. I didn't get any channels. There is a setup step which asks for your zip code so the unit can find channels near you. I recommend finding out if you will receive any channels before purchasing. I'm hoping they come out with a version with a stronger antennae.

Disappointed in product. When it said free tv for ALL, it wasn't. I read somewhere online that it had a distance of about 60 miles, which is why I purchased it. It doesn't. It didn't work for me but for others. Hopefully future antenna's will have a wider range. All I can say is keep trying for rural areas. Thanks

I pre-ordered this unit and waited for it for a couple months with high hopes. I have a wired mohu leaf 50 that gets good reception in my house but the coax cord is unsightly. I placed this unit in the same location as the mohu leaf 50 and could only get the streaming channels that they preload on it, no over the air channels could provide a signal that wasn't chopped into 1 sec pieces with buffering in between. Also it would constantly forget what channels I had scanned for and it supposedly found so I would have to repeat the scan almost every time I attempted to get the unit working again. Overall I tried about 10 positions in my house and even tried a wired connection to my router and still no luck. Needless to say I returned this unit after about 1.5 weeks of trying. Good idea but not ready for prime-time.

The good: Since I have relatively unobstructed line of sight to Mt. Wilson broadcasting towers, I was able to pull in 157 channels. Picture was excellent, and the channel guide was great as well. The bad: Despite having strong wifi, the picture would freeze quite often.. enough to ruin a viewing experience. Nevertheless, I have given 3 stars, and would suggest that so long as you can return it if you experience the same issues I experienced, then give it a try. I would give the same qualified recommendation to a friend.

I preordered back in May 2017 to work with my chromecast. But they didn’t support android yet so I returned. Before returning, I setup at friends house with a roku and installation was easy. Once channels were scanned, it had detected 56. Most channels didn’t work though and roku kept freezing. It was to early to purchase and reading their support the other day they may have a fix for the freezing. But no support for android yet. I kept it at 1 star as I am optimistic it will work eventually once kinks are worked out and hopefully supporting chrome.

WIreless antennae concept is outstanding (no coaxial cable hookup to TV so antenna can be placed anywhere. Still in new product development as Mohu App is not yet on iOS or apple TV or some android based TVs (mine was Roku TV). Great to have normal channel guide grid with the app. I returned my device because I could not get ABC as it is UHF and too far away/too much tress/buildings block it). Customer support was great to send me a different antenna and it pulled in more stations, but again, no ABC for me. Has a great proprietary thing to reduce choppy reception. Just did not get stations -- maybe too much metal in my building. Never new how many OTA channels were out there as non-Mohu picked up less.
