A Very Powerful Amplified Antenna
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Mohu has a great collection of antennas for broadcast television and the new Sail amplified indoor/outdoor antenna seems be upstaging the rest of their products. The box has all the right buzz words (1080 HDTV, Ultra HD and 4K Ready), all of which are technically correct, but it is important to state up-front that this is a television antenna designed to supplement a modern television (with a coax input and a USB input to power the amplifier). This antenna also seems to be marketed to people who want to “cut the cord” and dispense with their cable bill - and while this is a fantastic antenna, again it is an antenna for broadcast television and will not bring-in all your favorite shows that can only reach you through a paid cable service. But once your expectations are clear about what this antenna is supposed to do, I think you can’t help but be impressed by what it does. First of all, most of the existing catalog of Mohu antennas have names like “Mohu Leaf 30” or “Mohu Curve 50” where the number is supposed to indicate the range of reception in miles - this new addition, the Sail, suggests that it has a 75 mile range of reception. And to be clear, that sounds like you might expect it to receive every broadcast in a 75 mile radius but that’s unreasonable. I have no doubt that it might receive a usable signal from a strong station some 75 miles away - but what I found amazing was that it could capture signals from tiny stations nearly 30 miles away - stations that probably broadcast special programs to a specific community nearby. The antenna is enclosed in a weather-resistant hard plastic casing and the kit includes mounting hardware to secure it in your attic or on your roof. I tried the antenna in several positions around the room inside and compared my reception again with the antenna on my roof. An while I didn’t receive any additional stations with the antenna on the roof, all 55 of the stations I received were crystal clear with no frozen or disintegrating images. I had noticed that with the antenna inside, there were three stations that my TV could identify by call letters where it couldn’t even produce an image (I had a blank screen). Note - the antenna is gently curved - which would suggest it might be direction-sensitive - but I didn’t find any noticeable differences in reception with the antenna facing in different directions (as long as it wasn’t on its back). The antenna depends on signal amplification and the appropriate amplifier is included with the kit (along with a 30’ coax cable) - the little amplifier unit requires power from a USB source and most HDTVs have a USB input port that should work just fine - in the absence of a USB port on your television, there is a USB power supply included (but you would need to run an extension cord up fairly close to the amplifier unit to power it successfully). The box for the Sail kit aims to get you excited about getting high definition television (like: MeTV, Fox, ABC, Univision, ion, QVC, Grit, Comet, etc.) - and for all the stations that broadcast in HDTV format, I found the reception to be stunning - stations that don’t broadcast in glorious HDTV will still be crystal clear, but will be displayed in a reduced size on your screen. Again: I think it’s important to understand what the intended purpose of an antenna is before you buy something like this. An antenna is NOT a free replacement for what you might be accustomed to from a paid cable service. It is designed to receive broadcast television signals - and the stations are dominated by local news, older shows, shopping channels, religious programming, and Spanish (and other non-English) programming. But if you’re looking for an antenna, the is a VERY powerful antenna and feels like it has been built to last. I live in a mid-sized city with much larger cities surrounding me and with a cheap antenna my television can eek-out a handful of stations - with the Mohu Sail I snagged 55 stations.

Larger than expected but great results!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When the Mohu Sail antenna arrived it was much larger than I had expected, that's mostly on me for overlooking the dimensions! Still a very manageable size for indoor use and perfect for being mounted outdoors or in an attic. My placement options were a little limited being in an apartment but it fits perfect in our utility closet located on an exterior wall but, you could still easily hide this behind a TV. We previously had issues with receiving certain channels that were further away because of physical interference of walls and floors inside an apartment building with smaller antennas but this solved all of those! We gained 15 more channels and were able to link this into the cable connections to get to all of our TVs! It comes with an amplifier to further improve signal quality. With the amplifier, we gained 15 channels and without the amplifier still managed to grab about 5 more! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who's been having some issues receiving all their available local channels!
