The RAZR is Back!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Folding phones in general are VERY dependent on your taste. If you like the latest trends in tech, then folding phones are awesome. But if you’re a regular joe schmoe who does manual labor or anything related, you WILL break this phone. It’s a matter of when, not if. I personally like it because it’s a great way to experience stock android while also getting the best in folding technology, at least when it was new. The only downside for most people is the camera system. They’re not bad or anything, but for $1000 MSRP, it’s a bit underwhelming. The lack of a telephoto is a big downside for me personally, although I consider the ultra wide to be even more important, so it is what it is. Battery life was awesome, easily able to get all day if I minimize my usage to just the 3.6 inch cover display. In 2024 though, I would recommend getting the updated models.

Solid foldable all-around, though...
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is something I had decided to get at least five months ago, prior to the Z Fold 5's release, after reading a lot of reviews and generally finding consistent remarks about it being a solid phone. After owning it for at least five months, I feel like I can offer it those praises. Inner and outer displays are solid, audio is what you'd expect from something at this price point, and the cameras are solid for what it's worth. I had primarily chosen this over a tablet-style foldable because I felt the smaller size would be better for my pockets, and it did succeed at that (I wear guy pants so I have pockets to work with, but sometimes I'm not wanting to just have a long device fill up most of that space). Bloat's minimal, honestly could be worse. Battery can run me through the day with active use of various applications. I suppose my biggest criticism just comes from the outer display itself. Nothing wrong with it, more so that for the $300 more you'd be paying over the standard model, it's hard to say I've been entirely sold on it. Big pros on that front probably stem from the ability to use the outer display with the camera app. The phone has Motorola's gesture shortcut thingie that allows me to do fun things like double-chop to turn on the flash-light and twist it twice to pull up the camera app. It makes getting quick selfies easily, though the wave action to get the camera to take said picture without touching the screen is a bit finicky to work with. Allowing other people to see themselves in the photo being taken has helped them as well. There's also the fact that I can respond to text messages through that outer display, though understandably the keyboard will take up the entire display to be fully accessible. You only get one line to see what you're typing, so you'll have to be scrolling back and forth if you wanted to proof-read what you wrote. The smaller display with Android's trickiness to do that (at least, compared to Apple's which I find better to work with) doesn't do it any favors here, really. The outer display can be customized between the interface you interact with and the lock screen itself. For the lock screen I use the Moto Moo Time theme because I think that fella looks absolutely funky, and in the months I've had those phone Motorola have pushed out new animations that change through the day-to-day. It's nice to see the guy have a stable 9-to-5 with a train commute, enjoy the weekends, and have a steak dinner among other things. Checking weather at a glance, following up with immediate things to do, and checking the news are the main things I have active on that interface. There is also support for Google fit and Spotify as panels for said interface, and all of those things can have their location modified (this mostly impacts how many swipes you have to make to see said content). You are kind of locked in to having those panels, however, so if you're an absolute weirdo like me who uses Apple Music you don't exactly have an alternative to work with. The cons with the outer display start to roll in when you're really trying to explore the potential of using the outer display (though this particular one's a minor issue). If you want to use an app on the outer display, you'll either have to access the app through a notification or add it to a list through a menu provided in the outer display's interface. In either case, Motorola will push a disclaimer the first time you try to open it saying "Hey, you really, really might not have the most optimal experience using this app" with an option to either proceed, not go through with it, or disallow the app from ever opening on said display. This is generally pretty accurate. I'm not going to pretend that it's Motorola's fault that other app developers aren't optimizing their software for something that two devices on the market have. That's not to say you'll have the worst experience, though. Discord and Telegram are two chat applications I use and both work relatively well. Twitter, Tumblr, and Mastodon all scroll without much fuss and viewing the funny cats people post isn't a pain. Twitch is alright, but obviously you're not going to be having both the live stream itself and chat open at the same time. 7-Eleven's app has a barcode for scanning to get points from your purchases and that's both a slight pain to pull up and near-impossible to actually scan. Best Buy's app is alright, but with the search bar up top and the navigation tabs below always being active it takes away precious real estate. Best Buy's actual employee app suffers this much worse from navigation elements taking up way too much of that real estate, and attempting to do something simple like call out through it is actually impossible (the element that I have to click on doesn't actually show up). Allowing any app to open through this outer display opens a Pandora's box that's annoying to close however, and that's the "Continue" button. Closing the phone shut locks the phone, and by default any app you allow to open via the outer display will be enabled to have the prompt to continue using said app on the outer display. I mentioned before I wear dude pants, so I have pockets to work with. The material used for those pockets causes the display to pick up input. This has lead to a non-zero amount of instances greater than one where I'll have pocket-dialed someone. It's not like I'm prompted to re-unlock my phone either, it just unlocks again through this prompt. To bypass this I either have to wait for the prompt to vanish after a bit, or manually go into the settings for the outer display and disallow the app itself to have that prompt. There's no universal toggle to just say "Hey this feature sucks and I don't want to use it," so I'm legally required to go through every app and say "no" (or alternatively, just swipe up to go to the home screen before closing, but that's an extra input to make in my busy schedule of having nothing better to do). Those all annoyances I can work around, and I don't want the prose I've written to sound like a scathing negative over what's basically a $300 feature (compared to the standard model which lacks the outer display). But as a big part of selling the phone's outer display as a convenience thing, it's not as convenient as I'd like. For me, it kind of kills that novelty aspect and limits what I'd like to do with it as a functional display that I want to interact with. Overall I'd say if you can get the phone for a good discount and you're even vaguely interested in foldables (or just nostalgic about flip phones to begin with), it's not a bad call. You just gotta be ready to deal with the quirks that come with the phone's stand-out feature. Stack Bounce is goated, though.

Moto cool model
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really like this phone!! The flip portion is really cool, It's very useful to look at/control Spotify, calendar, messages, emails, weather, notifications, calculator and set alarms, etc. from the outside screen. Battery life is not bad, it's not going to be as good as a full size phone but still plenty and charges SUPER fast wirelessly and with Quick Chargers.lt actually feels very sturdy but I put a Zagg Bridgetown case on it - which makes me feel far more confident using this awesome phone. Fast enough to run all my apps, plenty of storage space to download music and hold all my photos/memes. Good sound quality from the built-in speakers, and the Bluetooth distance is great when hooking up to my portable speakers.

It won't break it half
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was pretty skeptical about getting a phone that folds in half but it's been great. No issues, my only regret is not getting the newer version, I got the cheapest one just in case it broke in half after a month lol. It also has been nice to be able to condense my phone, phones have gotten so big the last few years so it is nice to still get a decent size phone but be able to make it smaller so I can better fit into pockets or whatever. I would say the camera could be better, but like I said I did get a cheaper older version. So you get what you pay for on that but in general it's still pretty decent for the day to day person, so no issues with the camera but it's not going to be as good as the newest Samsung phone or anything of course. Again which is why I wish I would have gotten the newer better version.

Excellent form factor, good enough software
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted a phone for one hand use, that's less invasive than the license plate sized screens these companies want us to carry around. I use this mostly from the "external" display, and it feels satisfyingly decisive to switch to the, or close off that world. This form factor is a step in the right direction IMO, I wish the external display made it easier to hide banners in Apps, like looking at a full route on Google Maps, or seeing the search results as they pop up. Other, even smaller phones (Unihertz Jelly Star) do this well, so it's not just that the display is small. Screens look great, performance is awesome (tho I don't play games), generally the software is good, slightly glitchy to silence incoming calls when closed, and I'm annoyed I can't delete TikTok. Functionally it means the phone model cannot be used for the work I do.

Great Phone for the price
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really should give this phone five stars based on the price. It was several hundred dollars cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5 that I was considering, and it almost as good. I took off a star for two things that I think the Galaxy phone does better. First thing is this phone does not seem to have a simple way to turn off the Bluetooth like the Galaxy phones have. The second thing is that the Galaxy phones have quick access to several functions by swiping down from the top of the screen. An example of this it turning on the flashlight. This phone doesn't seem to have as good of a system for quick access to turn things on and off. It does have a quick way to turn on the flashlight by shaking the phone in a motion like chopping wood with a hatchet. But on the good side, this has been a solid phone so far. Great screen, great battery life, easy transfer from old phone, and feels good in the hand. Because of the price difference, I would still buy this phone over the Galaxy Flip 5.

One month in and it's pretty good
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Im coming from a Samsung Galaxy S20+ and overall I like it. The phone feels well built and it runs smoothly. What I don't are very specific things. For example, on my old phone you could change gestures to swipe from the side or bottom and you cant't with this. The volume controls are also weird and seem to only be for music, not notifictions, unless you go into settings. I coukd also slow the level of wireless charging and can't now. Overall I enjoy it.
