First off: People, *read* the label on the package with regards to the maximum range of this radio. NO, it will *not* transmit 35 miles unless you are standing atop the highest mountain and your buddy is standing in the lowest valley and there is nothing between you but air. FRS radios have a 1/2 watt of effective radiated power which means in the real world you're only gonna get about a mile or so of range ...probably less under most conditions. Why the marketing types at Motorola even put that ridiculous information on the packages I'll never know. Okay now that we've got that out of the way.... These are great radios where you have a group of people spread out in a localized area. These are especially suited to outdoor events. With indoor usage, say on a cruise ship or in a building, you will no doubt experience a very limited range as the signal has a lot of solid barriers it must penetrate. Outdoors I have found these radios quite worthy. Our volunteer group uses these radios. We work in mountainous terrain and given the limitations of the low power and terrain these radios work surprisingly well. But then none of us is expecting to be able to use them for great distances. Each person in a group can have their own "ring tone" when making a call or when they are in need of help and can't talk. Under heavy use, the batteries will last about a day ...maybe 8 hours. If you're gonna be using them a lot each day put them on the charger overnight. While the radios come with NiMh battery packs, you can swap in a set of three AA's in an emergency. Charging is an overnight operation; there is no quick charge capability. One of the unique features of FRS/GMRS radios is that they all share a common set of frequencies. So if your hunting buds have brand "B" and you have your Motorola, as long as you are all on the same frequency, you can talk with one another. In addition, these radios have a discrete channel filter that blocks out all other signals on a particular frequency unless the other radio also has the discrete code. This adds a bit of security to your transmissions and helps eliminate interference from other radios that may be operating on or near your selected frequency. The radios come with NOAA weather radio reception capabilities and once set up for your region can provide timely forecasts. You can even set the radios up to deliver NOAA emergency weather alerts ...an alarm goes off and the radio begins broadcasting automatically. A nice feature in those areas of the country prone to severe weather. And last but not least each radio has a small LED flashlight. Kinda neat when you're in the dark. Overall these radios are chock-full of a lot of neat and useable features. They are well-built ...have a substantial feel to them and, as long as you're not expecting miracles (like being able to talk to someone 35 miles away), they work terrific. There is one small glitch that may crop up if you use one of the digital interference eliminator codes; when you press-to-talk, wait just a second before you begin to speak otherwise the first syllable of your message will be cut off. The only reason I did not give straight "5's" was because as far as reliability goes, to me, that's a matter of time. Sure, they work great out of the box, but how will they hold up in the long run. I'm thinking they will hold up well but, only time will tell. Other than that I can find no faults with these radios.

3 miles at best, in near open country, no hills. Radios were bought because of limited cell phone coverage, low cell signal was better.

I was looking for an inexpensive set of these kind of radios for our emergency response team. We are never far away from each other, it for traffic control within a range of half a mile or so, and instead of yelling, this is much easier at professional. I wished they would come two separate charging stations, but I like the fact that the radios can be charged via mini USB in the car i.e. or on a laptop. They feel sturdy, have a built-in flashlight, and the setup was very easy. But I have admit that this is not my first time working with these and other kind of radios. The range of course is never 35 miles as stated on the packing. Whoever believes that is dreaming.

These are worthless and do not work as advertised. Description stated they had a 30 mile range and they did not work beyond 30 feet. I work over the road transportation and purchased them for back up communication when we are not in our vehicles. I was extremely disappointed and returned them the following week.
