    Excellent Laptop with Minor Issues

First, I would give this 4.5 stars if I could. This is not a perfect 5/5 laptop, but better than a 4/5 one. I'm a college professor who plays games. I'm going to be using this mostly for work/school but don't want to be throttled when I am playing games. I also do some light video editing and other graphic design stuff. Pros: - Very fast processor and great graphics performance - The screen is amazing! I'm more impressed with 144 hz than I thought I would be. - The keyboard is very pleasant to type on and the changing colors are cool - The laptop just looks great and has a very nice profile - Light and easily portable Cons: - The build quality leaves much to be desired. I had to immediately return the first unit I purchased because the bottom panel was screwed on too tight in the front-center just under the touchpad. It warped the profile of the laptop and was causing issues with the touchpad. It also cause a very loud cracking sound where the plastic pieces were rubbing against one another. It was immediately apparent as I was taking the laptop out of the box. I returned the unit and do have one that is much better; however, there is still some of the same cracking noise between the plastic pieces. Even now as I'm typing, as I slightly lift my hands up to type there is creaking noises. I am probably going to try and tighten or loosen the screws. Maybe even take off the bottom panel and see if there is something else I can do to lessen this problem. Ultimately, this is unacceptable for a $2,000 laptop. I was looking at the HP Spectre x360 before and those are built rock solid. If I was looking only at build quality, I would return this immediately, go for the HP and get $500 back. But I would lose some power, which is why I am not doing that. Maybe Con: Speakers aren't the best but I'll rarely use them so it doesn't matter much to me. Bottom Line: Check your laptop before you leave the parking lot to make sure that it was properly manufactured. Best Buy did handle the exchange for a new one very well; it was only a minor inconvenience. If you do find the build quality to be acceptable, then this is a wonderfully fantastic laptop that otherwise exceeded my expectations. My wife says it looks like a lamborghini...

    Phenomenal Laptop for Game Development

    Posted .

I'll start with my needs. I need a laptop that is powerful, fast, and has plenty of SSD memory for my many active game projects. ✔ I need Windows 10. ✔ I need a laptop that is lightweight. ✔ I need a laptop that has decent battery life. ✔ I need a laptop that looks professional when meeting with clients. ✔ I did days of research leading up to this purchase. I actually hadn't purchased a laptop for about 7 years. I'm a conservative guy! The problem with my ageing laptop was the low disk space, slow startup, and huge hulkish build. In school I was happy to lug that thing around! Your cost to power ratio are pretty good with a desktop replacement laptop. As I left school and started my career in game development my needs changed. To say this laptop is powerful is a given. I have to have power when I'm working in the Unity Game Engine 8 hours a day. I need productivity. Every ounce of speed helps me decode my thoughts with clarity and grace. I need to be agile, flexible, go anywhere anytime. I need to be minimalist on a convention floor. I need to look professional in front of a client. This laptop over performs in every category. The design of this laptop looks so good with its copper trim and black matte aluminum casing. Not only can I go anywhere.. I want to go everywhere! Coffee shop, Brewery, Diner, Coworking Space, wherever. I don't need to walk in with a heavy backpack, and ask awkwardly for a seat close to a power outlet. The battery life is so good on this thing, they advertise 8+ hours of battery life. I can run on full brightness, with Chrome blaring music in my headphones, with the Unity Editor open for 4+ hours before I have to start thinking about charging it. At 4 lbs this laptop is a delight to carry around. This laptop just doesn't get in the way. It doesn't try to be flashy. It simply is the medium through which you view the content you are developing or consuming. The only problem I have with this laptop is it can get hot near the back underside, when working on my bed. The computer noticeably slows down a bit when it gets hot. To avoid that, I work on surfaces that aid in dissipation of heat. This laptop gets 5 stars from me I would buy again.

In purchasing this product, I was a bit hesitant at first. I am a freshman in college going for a degree in computer science, and I wanted a fast, slim, light, and overall capable computer to carry me through my degree. I had done my fair share of research with all sorts of laptops prior to this one and was originally on the edge between the MSI GS65 or the Windows Surface Book 2. What eventually pushed me to decide on this laptop compared to the Surface and other similar gaming laptops was the powerhouse performance in a slim body at a reasonable cost (for a gaming laptop of course) PROS: -The Intel-i7 8750H is a phenomenal processor with excellent performance across browsing, gaming, programming, and more. In addition, the power saving mode throttles the speed relatively well at around 1.0 GHz to save battery life -The GTX-1070 is stellar for a laptop. I easily get above 60FPS on most intensive games at the highest settings without any problems -The keyboard is probably one of my personal favorites. The low design of the keys is not too low to where you're essentially tapping against the chassis, but it is just enough to get a good tactile feel of the keys. -16GB RAM. Enough said -Battery life is pretty good. With enough power balancing, I manage to get around 6-7 hours on average of non-gaming activities, about 1.5-2 hours of gaming on a single charge. Pretty good for a gaming laptop -The fan is not too loud and the customization for the fan speed is a big plus CONS: -The chassis is a little on the thin side. I recall pressing down on the area next to the trackpad and hearing a little squeak or sorts that comes from the body squishing down a bit. Not too much of a concern, as it's only noticeable if you press down moderately hard -Trackpad takes getting used to and is not the best feeling -The charging port is located on the right side of the laptop right in the middle of the body. Not really a con, just one of the weirder locations for a port I suppose -Biggest Con: bloatware. When I first got this laptop, I was surprised to see how much bloatware was installed on it. Everything from various control centers and suites to Norton Antivirus was installed. I highly recommend a clean install of the OS in order to fully utilize the speed and performance of the laptop (Side note: download and save all of the necessary drivers to a removable disk if you are going to clean install. I learned the hard way that even the Killer wireless driver gets uninstalled with a fresh install) Other than the mentioned cons, this is an excellent laptop for programming, gaming, leisure, studying, and professional work. I am in love with it and would gladly buy it again.

I absolutely love the MSI GS65 laptop. What initially interested me in this laptop was how elegant and sleek it looked. Gaming laptops in these past few years seem to have become more "aggressive" looking. I'd compare it to adding a body kit and lighting to a car. I used to think that style looked great, but after a few years I've started thinking that it looks a bit cheesy. Not the GS65, it looks classy. I would have no problems bringing this laptop into a business meeting. Another thing I didn't like about gaming laptops is that they were usually big and heavy and a chore to travel with. With the GS65, it fit in almost every bag or case that I had. No more need to go and find a backpack that would fit my monstrosity of a laptop. Not only is it thin and light, but it is powerful I was taken back at the hardware specs they were able to fit into this package. I am an avid gamer, and have 3 gaming computers at home. My fastest gaming rig is only 2 years old, and this laptop outperforms it. It will handle all the latest games with no problem. GTA V, Guild Wars 2, Fortnite, Pub-G, and Overwatch are what I play mostly. I know they are not the most graphic intensive games, but the system runs them with no problem at all. It will get a little hot when gaming. But it's not unbearably hot as some other gaming laptops are. The first thing I did when I got it was upgrade the hard drive. Usually this involves unscrewing the bottom panel of the laptop and switching out parts. But in the case of this laptop, once you take off the panel, you have to remove a few more screws and disconnect a few ribbon cables so that you can remove the motherboard since it is mounted upside down. I was definitely intimidated at first, but I was able to manage it by following a couple of tutorials on youtube. The other thing that I found out was that it has two M.2 slots, but only one of them supports SATA and the hard drive that comes installed is a SATA drive. So if you plan to install another M.2 SSD, make sure that you get a PCIe SSD. Despite those issues, in my opinion it's currently the best looking and best performing gaming laptop you can get in it's price range. If I could sum things up, here are the pros and cons. Pros: Really thin and light Will run most games at high or ultra resolution Screen looks sharp and clear Steelseries Keyboard lights look great Ethernet Port Cons: A little harder to upgrade memory and hard drives Only one of the M.2 slots supports SATA Not a fan of the gold MSI logo on the back of the monitor Speakers are a bit lacking, I get better sound out of my iPad

I've had several gaming laptops over the years (razor blade, eluktronics pro, and some old ones no one knows about) and this is by and far my favorite. Pros: - As far as a gaming laptop goes, it's light - Decent battery life for a gaming laptop - Excellent screen refresh - Dual channel ram (the Best Buy version has 2 8gb sticks) - 512GB SSD (not nvme, sadly, but this really isn't a huge deal for gaming) - Excellent gaming performance - 6 core i7!! - Touchpad is actually decent. It's nowhere near Macbook quality, but for a windows laptop, it's pretty good, and for a gaming laptop, it's excellent. Cons: - Screen bleed is a bit annoying (however my unit has no dead or stuck pixels) - Fans are a bit chatty. Not horrible (I'm looking at you razor) but it's not a quiet laptop. - It gets hot. Don't put this on your lap when gaming. I got the geek squad warranty in case the heat kills it. - Location of power adapter. No ports on back - Not exactly cheap, but it's not a bad price for what it is.
