Good specs but unreliable
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Seemed great at first. Games well for my purposes (though I don't do that much so take that with a grain of salt). Fan blew out fairly quickly, was a very cheap piece of plastic and had to be replaced. Sound has stopped working multiple times. Not impressed, especially for the price.

Absolutely amazing, despite the price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an amazing laptop, from the build quality to the internals, it doesn't disappoint. It exceeds in nearly every category that a laptop can and has left me extremely satisfied. Good job MSI. TL;DR at the end. Pros: - Great specs - Pretty good battery life - Thin and relatively light - Great screen - Great selection of ports Cons: - Price, and even then for the specs and size you're getting the best deal on the market The Hardware: Obviously this computer is no slouch. A GTX 1070 Max-Q, i7 8750H, 16gb ram, and to top it off a 144hz screen. You'll be maxing out any game that you come across playing 1080p at 144hz and easily be getting far over 60fps. The laptop does get hot (80-85C on my laptop/gpu under load usually) but it expells the heat through the back of the laptop, so gaming on the keyboard doesn't get uncomfortable after long gaming periods. Speaking of the keyboard, it's one of my favorite aspects of the laptop. It requires a bit more actuation force than your average keyboard, which I absolutely love. And the addition of per-key RGB lighting (as opposed to zone lighting in the previous generation) is a nice touch. Directly below the keyboard of course is the track pad. To describe it simply is above average. Not a macbook, but better than the a-verage bear. Ports-wise, this has almost everything a man could want. An ethernet port, 3 USB A, 1 Thunderbolt 3.0, HDMI, Mini Displayport, and separate Headphone and Microphone jacks. The only thing that's missing would probably be an SD card reader, but that doesn't affect me hardly ever. The Software: This is my first MSI laptop, but I've heard many a stoory oof the notorious MSI bloatware complementary with your $2000 computer. It's true, but not nearly as bad as what i was lead to believe. Second thing I did when I turned on my laptop for the first time (first being installing chrome) was uninstall Norton. Dragon Center is actually quite useful, however, as it allows you to control the fan speed, among other things. All in all, the software is more of a minor inconvenience rather than something that should make or break your purchase of the laptop. Overview (TL;DR) This laptop is great in every aspect. Great hardware, helpful software. The only bad things I could think of were that it has an okay webcam (but it's in a good position, so I can't complain too much), price, and the track pad isn't the best on the market. If those are the only things I can complain about, then this laptop is nearly perfect.

Fantastic portable gaming machine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is a beast. Build quality is superb. Razer may still have it beat here but it's all metal construction and feels very solid. Power per dollar is unmatched in this category of machine. I spent enough time deal hunting to know. These specs in a thin and light body don't exist anywhere else at this price point. Performance is fantastic and, while it certainly can get hot, it's powered through all my games. There is a little throttling if you absolutely peg everything to 100% but I haven't had too much real world issues there yet. I might repaste it like so many have. Keyboard is very solid and ha s a very standard layout (no num pad). Key travel is shallow but the keys feel very good to type on. Not squishy, good and tactile. Doesn't use Intel touchpad drivers which is a little unfortunate but the touchpad feels great regardless and I've had no issues. Clicking is a little stiff as some have said but it doesn't bother me. SSD is NOT NVMe in this model but it does have the NVMe capability. Price is still worth it though. I'll be adding my own NVMe drive and use the included drive as data storage (it has two slots, awesome!) If you do plan on doing some work on it, as I am, this is NOT an easy laptop to take apart. Nearly everything is replaceable but it will require intermediate-advance skills with computer (specifically laptop) hardware. Would have preferred power adapter not be on the right side so close to the middle. A little annoying if you plan on using a mouse and you're cramped for space. Overall this review looks like I'm complaining but the computer has been super stable and solid. Very, very happy with it, I'm just nit-picky with my machines. Highly recommended and very happy with my choice. Not only do I prefer it to it's competitors as it stands, the price only makes it better!

Great Gaming Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very happy with this laptop. bought it after a lot of research. Pros: Lightning fast, super powerful, amazingly light, and very compact. Battery life is excellent for a gaming laptop. Very sophisticated look -- does not scream gaming laptop. Cons: fans can be noisy, hard to upgrade (motherboard is upside down, so you have to remove it to add RAM or a second drive), cost (good value for a high-end gaming laptop, but it is definitely in the higher cost bracket).

Great PC for the money.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed a solid laptop and was looking for best value in terms of performance while not spending more than $2k . I spent a good amount of time looking for one. I had almost settled for a Lenovo but I saw the MSI in a side by side comparison. I was going for a 13.7" Lenovo but the larger display along with the features convinced me to go with the MSI. PROS - 8th gen Intel I7 processor, - Great color - Great keyboard customized with SteelSeries Engine 3 - Long battery life - Super thin and light (which is why I was looking at Lenovo) CONS - MOUSEPAD , not a fan but ok - No G-Sync - Speakers are underneath the laptop, some sound muffling -512GB SSD is ok but need to get an external drive. Overall, I am a satisfied customer.

I've fallen in love with this laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Seriously. I have. I have been looking for a powerful laptop that can play the newest games, but I didn't want one of those incredibly stupid looking gaming laptops that obviously would stand out at a Starbucks or during college lectures. My first choice was actually a Dell XPS 15 2in1, which I purchased for the exact same price as the MSI. While it was certainly a confident laptop, it had its issues. The 4K screen drained battery life signifigantly. I didn't care for the 2in1 features. It was slower than I was expecting. It got SUPER hot. It couldn't game as it had such a low refresh rate. It also had a few annoying stuck pixels. ALL of these problems I had with my Dell XPS are fixed with the MSI GS65 stealth thin. I seriously love this laptop. While 4K does look much better than 1080p, the battery life on this thing is incredible. You do lose that Dell/Macbook feeling of craftsmanship as the materials don't feel as polished in my honest opinion, but you are giving up worthlessness for versatility. The amount of ports on this thing is absolutely crazy. No stupid USB-C only garbage here. I totally love that. The keyboard is incredible, non of that magnetic stuff in the macbook/XPS going on here. It feels great to type. The font does look a bit too "gamey" for my tastes, although I have come to accept this. And oh boy, that 144hz refresh rate. This thing is a gaming beast. I've run vanquish at high stettings at 144 fps, the Division on ultra at 75 FPS, fallout 4 on ultra at 73 FPS, etc, etc. etc. I have yet to try the newest games, but this is a competent machine to say the least. Also stays super cool. Very satisfied!

Built Quality issues!!! Returning.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m returning my unit due to 2 reasons. Creaking on palm rest area. Everytime i wanna type i hear a creaking sound in right area of the palm rest. Really MSI??!! No good!!! Light bleed on lower left panel of screen. A $2000 on a laptop shouldn’t have these issues.

Great Laptop / Great Deal
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: - Cost - this SKU is specific to Best Buy, and its the best deal out there in terms of storage/GPU combo. Other 1070 laptops are 200-300 more. - Speed - I was a bit skeptical of the SATA drive, and while it does benchmark as expected (about 1/5th the speed of nVME drives in the Razer Blade or Aero 15) the difference in the system is nonexistant. Boot / wake times are comically fast, and load times are negligible - Performance + Thermals - I mostly play PUBG, which is a poorly optimized and system-demanding title. I hit about 80 on CPU, 70 on GPU, and get to 144 FPS @ 1080 with some graphic tweaks. System isnt outrageously loud unless you turn on the 'fan boost' which isnt worth it in my opinion. - Everything else: Screen is great, though a little more brightness next time MSI (I think it caps at 300 nits, which is industry average. 400-500 would be luxury, like Macbooks typically have) The trackpad is fabulous, though the clicks are a bit rigid. THis is my third MSI laptop and the keyboard is great as always. No numpad, which I like for a more centered typing experience, but its worth noting. Battery in real world usage (50% brightness, moderate wifi web browsing) is about 5 hours. Cons: - This wont apply to 99% of potential buyers, but MSI installs the motherboard upside down. This means that upgrading your laptop yourself is nearly impossible. No other OEM does this, and its frustrating as heck. You can technically do them yourself, but at risk to damaging your system. Highly recommended if you are in the 1800-2400$ range for a powerful gaming laptop.

Great Gaming Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The MSI GS65 Stealth Thin is a great gaming laptop. The speed is crazy even compared to the last gen i7. The 8th gen i7 gives the laptop a snappy feel and even rivals the speed of my custom built desktop. The screen has good colors and is bright. Very little light bleed is seen when on a black screen and the 144hz refresh rate is just crazy. Games look amazing and run great. The keyboard is pretty good. The RGB backlighting is awesome being able to set each key how you like and the different modes for FPS, MOBA, etc. is actually kinda handy. You can even edit the template and add other keys you might use for different FPS games. The travel is short, but feels nice when typing. They are precise key presses too, no mush when typing this review at all. The layout is also nice, everything is where you expect and it is cool when pressing the Fn key to have the functions light up, super handy at night. The Track pad is probably my only real issue with the laptop. Compared to some of the other premium laptops in this market, the track pad is good, a little on the small size, but tracks fairly well. If you plan to game a lot or do design work and such, you'll probably be using an external mouse, so not a huge deal. Works well enough when mobile. Overall I am very happy with this laptop. A good upgrade from previous gen models and has all the features you could want, no bezels and blazing performance. Cooling works well as well with very little to no throttling at all when using cooler boost and gaming.

Great slim gaming Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.MSI GS65 Stealth is a beast. Build Quality and design: This laptop is very thin, light weight and feels durable. There is some flex to the laptop, but overall with everyday use not very noticeable. It is very appealing to look at especially with the light up keyboard. I've had many positive comments from passersby in the coffee shop. The display is sharp and crisp with vibrant colors. At 144Hz it is ideal for gaming. Performance: I bought this laptop primarily for gaming especially with Oculus Rift. It has performed brilliantly. It runs Fortnite and Fallout 4 at high framerates and does not miss a beat. The only downside is that it runs very hot under a heavy load. I purchased a laptop cooler pad to help dissipate the heat. Battery Life: While gaming the battery life is relatively short, but lasts the day under normal daily use such as web browsing, emailing, watching Youtube, etc. Software: There is some bloatware as is expected but is all easily removable. The app, MSI Dragon Center is easy to use and intuative for tuning of the laptop. Conclusion: Overall, The MSI GS65 Stealth exceeded my expectations. It is a workhorse for gaming, especially for VR gaming. I recommend this laptop to all gamers.

Great Laptop, Very Few Compromises
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Firstly, the laptop has a great finish quality on it and is constructed of high grade materials. It does pick up some fingerprints, but cleans off very easily. There are not many places for dust to be lodged in, and it fits perfectly into my 15" Thule case from Best buy as well. The hinge is thin, but sturdy, and the screen does not annoyingly bob up and down. The speakers are reasonably loud, and are located at the bottom corners. Due to being placed much closer to you, they do a good job at conveying surround sound combined with the high quality of the laptops sound management systems. However, they could be louder, and they are muffled when placed on a soft surface. This is not a deal breaker for me though, as they are leagues above any other thin-and-light form factor laptop. Cooling: The laptop has extremely well designed cooling fans, and in regular use or browing on chrome, they seem not to even be on. The design which expels air out of the sides and back while intaking from the bottom and top works very well, and they are still at barely a whisper while playing games like Assasin's Creed Origins, Battlefield 3, Grand Theft Auto, etc; something I could not say about my Razer Blade 14. Although I havent needed to use this feature, the fans can be manually controlled in MSI's included Dragon Center and they do a fantastic job under harsh rendering loads (I used Adobe Premiere Cs6 to render a 4k Video). -Unfortunately, the bottom of the laptop does get very hot, but that is unavoidable in this form factor. a simple solution is to place one thin object between your lap and the computer if you are gaming on it. Keyboard Quality: No complaints. The layout is slightly different from other computers I have worked on such as a MacBook Pro or a Razer Blade, but I learned the new layout quickly as it is very intuitive. The volume and brightness controls are quickly toggles to the directional keypad with the fn button, making on-the-fly adjustments while gaming or working in a fullscreen program very fluid. Keyboard Lighting: The Steelseries Keyboard is very easy to type on, no mushy, not too loud, and has Per-Key RGB. This was one feature I loved from my Razer Blade, but I believe this keyboard does it better. You can program as many macro's to change the keyboard as you want, write your own lighting setups, use preloads, or even download pre-made layouts for your most used programs. My favorite was setting the keyboard to burn in orange and red while playing DOOM. Support and setup are very easy as the client comes pre-installed. Monitor/LCD: The panel did not live up to all of my wildest dreams, but if you give it a chance you can appreciate the 144hz display. It is extremely bright, has a quality finish on it, and looks stunningly smooth on the games that are optimized to run on it. However, I do wish the contrast ratio was better, and a 7ms response time, while amazing for a laptop, is not incredibly better than most monitors. Ports: One of the main reasons I got this laptop was because of all of the port offerings it had while still being extraordinarily thin. It packs a full size ethernet port, allowing you to truly experience low-latency gaming or high dowload speeds. I had no problem with my 300mb/s home network. --USB-C works amazingly, and can support multiple other devices and monitors through one port. --Audio connectors are high quality, sturdy, and dont seem like they would break anytime soon. They are not recessed into the body so you do not have to worry about them getting gunk in them or becoming misaligned. --Three USB 3.1 gen 2 ports are more than enough for me. If you're plugging more than that in... well, you can always extend them with a USB-C dock. They are sturdy and hold plugs with no wobble. --Inclusion of a full-size HDMI is much appreciated, however I will not be using mine unless I have to. It seems very study, but I recommend you try to use the more durable display ports and usb-c ports as breaking the HDMI port can be very hard to repair. Nonetheless, it is very nice to have and so long as you dont put stress on the connector or use low-grade cables, it should last the lifetime of the device. Next, Performance. Battery life is OK. Nothing exceptional unless in battery saver mode, but for a gaming laptop, it is crazy. Turn down the brightness and hit power saver, and you can go a good 8 hours, give or take 2 depending on if you are just writing documents, or doing more intensive tasks like streaming 1080p video. Still, you wont feel absolutely tethered constantly. The small power adapter is pretty easy to throw in a backpack, but I did like my Razer Blade 14's smaller adapter. That being said, for the extra couple of inches you get an extra 20 watts of power, and that is worth it when you are gaming. The i7 6-core processor is a beast. I mean, crazy. It doesnt choke on anything. It is like having a desktop everywhere you go, and multiple processes at once is a breeze. The flexibility of having a low base clock and a high turbo speed mean it works very well regardless of the task at hand. Paired to the gtx 1070, this laptop really lets you push the limits, and it is nearly neck-and-neck with the 1080 laptops. Although I cant include everything in this review, the last peice I would like to add is about UPGRADABILITY. A very touchy, hit-or-miss subject for some consumers. If you are like me, you want to know the laptop is going to be able to keep up with the competition for at least a few years down the road. I was extremely happy to see that there is not only one, but two m.2 slots on the bottom, so you can always upgrade the storage if you want. The ram slots, of which there are two, while not easy to get to, can be upgraded. Unfortunately, I believe you may only go up to 32gb of ram, but I barely ever use all 16. In terms of future proofing though, not many other computers can do better, and for the form factor, nobody beats this. As a side note, all of the swappable components other than the wifi card will require you to take out the motherboard and flip it over. It is a simple enough laptop that it can be done by most gamers with care, but it is no job to be rushed (you could break fragile connectors) so hiring a certified technician may be a good avenue for more entry level users. In conclusion: This is a solid machine, a beast that dosnt draw too much attention, but puts full size towers to shame with little difficulty. It is built well, designed with the user in mind, and works as intended. MSI did a great job, and the price is unbeatable for the power and new technology you are getting.

Great Step Up from my Macbook Pro
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I previously had a MacBook Pro with all the options on it and loved it. It was getting a bit old and I needed a larger hard drive, so I started looking for a gaming PC. I wanted something slick, solidly built, and ready for any game I could throw at it. I initially got the MSI GS63, and it was good, but it didn't have that polished feel I was looking for and it was only a 60hz refresh rate. Switching to the GS65 was a phenomenal decision. This computer is much smaller, lighter, more professional looking and has a finished feel to it that the GS63 lacked. I love the screen bezel (about 1/4 inch on the sides and top) and the display is much more crisp with smoother motion. I ran Gears of War 4 on full graphics through multiple scenes and was running an average of 100 frames per second; the lowest I saw was 90. Everything you touch on this computer feels well made from quality materials. The RGB keyboard is really cool too; you can tweak it to be low key or go wild (Disco mode is fun!). The one complaint I have is that it's only a 1080p display, but for gaming that is fine; I just liked the extra real estate when using the Retina display on my MBP. If you're on the fence about this computer, DO IT! You won't regret it.

Expensive, but very light, portable, and capable
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These will be my first impressions on having the laptop for just a few days, so I cannot comment on its longevity, but from what I've heard there are no problems there. The fans run a little loud, especially if you are playing games or doing anything CPU intensive, but this isn't terrible, especially with headphones. It does get very hot in these cases, though, especially the bottom and sides (near the fans), to the point where it is almost impossible to use on your lap without resting it on something, though in most cases where it gets this hot you wouldn't be using it on your lap anyway. The screen is excellent and the laptop itself looks great, very sleek and sophisticated. The keyboard feels very responsive and springy, and the touchpad is suitable, though it does feel a little sticky. The placement of the touchpad is also a little awkward, as there is not a lot of room to rest your left hand, but this isn't as big an issue as I initially expected it to be. In terms of performance, the laptop runs great. Everything loads quickly and runs well. You can play almost any game on max settings with >60fps. All in all, while a little steep in price, the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin is worth the price due to its portability and performance.

Good Hardward, lots of bloatware
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good laptop, pretty much what it says on the box. Only issue so far is with the 'Killer' Network adapter's control software. Uninstalling that and installing a generic driver relieved the network jitter.

Nice and Sleek Laptop with Power
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been pushing off a laptop purchase for quite some time...trying to find one that was sleek, powerful, and (relatively) quiet. About a year and a half ago I purchased the razer blade 14 thinking it was just that, ending up only disappointed when I received a faulty unit with numerous issues. I returned that unit and decided to wait. Now, enter the MSI GS65 stealth...I finally broke down and made the leap again. Almost two week into using the machine, I am pleased with my purchase. The stealth is very sleek looking, with just the accent of gold here and there and the nice looking dragon logo on the back. I can feel confident using this thing out in public...it is very sleek and I love the aesthetic design. Performance wise, it has plenty of power to plow through the games I enjoy...granted I am not a hardcore gamer. Testing the stealth out playing Doom, I was able to hit 90-100 fps on ultra setting in areas with the machine plugged in on performance mode...and it looked beautiful on the high refresh screen. Audio was clear and crisp, though I would imagine if you want a truly immersive experience you would be hooking this thing up to some real speakers or just use a headset. Fan noise from the laptop while charging and when kicked into gear is noticeable, but nothing obnoxious...and when playing a game it isn't a bother. When doing non-performance tasks, I notice no fan noise...maybe a whisper once in awhile. The laptop does get quite warm while gaming; it would probably be uncomfortable on my lap...but I normally use this on a hard surface anyways...so nothing unexpected there. Build quality would be the most lacking of any characteristics on this machine. It is fine, just not as solid as what I was accustom to with my previous long-running laptop (an older macbook pro). When I pick it up with one hand at the corner of the laptop to move it from one room to another while in use, it honestly feels a bit fragile, Im pretty sure i heard some crackling the first few times I did this...but I'm sure this was nothing major, just minor flexing of the frame/case/etc., though this is still an uneasy sound to hear. The track-pad is also not the best, though I almost always use a wireless mouse anyways. Overall, I would recommend this, as it is a good value, and one of the best looking laptops out there.
