Great Gaming Computer, Good for College

I recently bought this MSI Stealth Laptop, and I am very happy about it. I bought it due to needing a device to play my games on in college while also being able to take it to class. So far, I have not had a problem using it to play games while I have an application downloading in the back with music playing and many tabs up. This really surprised me, but I love how it works. The aesthetic is very nice. I'm a big fan of the sleek black and the per-key RGB keyboard is amazing. I love the different settings and its been fun having people complement the keyboard in class. The SSD is especially nice for allowing me to quickly load applications and games quickly. Having previously used a regular HHD, this was a very welcomed jump. The only real complaint I have is that finger/hand grease really shows up on the black. It is easy enough to clean, but it still annoys me a little. The trackpad would annoy be if I was a trackpad gamer as it is not very good for that, but I don't see why anyone would game on a trackpad when mouses work so much better anyways, so it shouldn't be a problem if you just use a mouse. Altogether, it is a great laptop and well worth the money.

    A triumph of engineering

The goal of a lightweight gaming laptop has always seemed tantalizingly out of reach. MSI has solved that with the GS 65. Pros: Weight 8th gen Intel i7 processor NVIDIA 1070 graphics card Sturdy build quality Thin Cons: For some reason they've divided the 500 gig SSD into two partitions. The laptop is plastered with stickers. I've already bought it. Do I need to be notified that it's a PC Buyer Guide Choice winner?

Great Look & Specs - Bad Thermals & Build Qualit

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Don't get me wrong. This notebook is beautiful. I picked it over the Gigabyte Aero 15X, Alienware Anything, Razer Anything, Asus Zephyrus, and so on. This market is getting insane, but there are many flaws in every design. Whether it thermals, build quality, compatibility, lack of peripherals, screen selection, and so on. Pros - -Great Specs at the average price point for this type of machine -Display - 144Hz IPS- 15 inch monitor in a 14 inch chassis - Looks amazing and is taken advantage of with the 1070 Max Q. Not to mention, there is almost no bezel at roughly 4mm. -The camera is at the top of the display. No creepy late 1990s AOL video chat action. Other companies have opted to put the camera at the bottom, but I would rather not have one if you have to do that. -Keyboard is responsive and the size is right, plus RGB. It actually helps people like myself who like to set the keys to indicate certain areas of the keyboard. It helps with casting skills and so on. -Super Light -Sophisticated build with no silly external RGB lights or logos. -Looks like an Ultrabook or MacBook Pro -The touch pad is nice and smooth. -The MSI software seems nice and bug free. There does seem to be overlap between different programs, but that is to be expected in this day and age of competitive simplicity. -No number pad, so my hands can sit nice and center on the laptop while typing. Cons- -Great Specs, but apparently MSI used thee worst thermal paste ever, the Gigabyte Aero 15X is coming 15-20C lower with the stock configuration. Apparently the only fix is to change the thermal paste to a liquid metal composition, but you can throw the standard warranty of 24 months in the trash with the tube. The reviews showing this mod, bring the temperature down 20C and the performance on stress tests up around 20%. -1070 MAX Q is a down-clocked version of the 1070, but the thermals would be melting this thing with a full on 1070 -Display - flimsy with light bleed that is noticeable in darker rooms. It is to be expected with how thin the screen is. Watch out when carrying this baby, apply too much pressure and I can easily see why this display would warp or crack. By too much, I mean the pressure that a normal person would apply to a laptop that weighs more than the four pounds this bad boy weighs. -The camera is 720p and nothing to write home about. -The keyboard does flex a bit and the software is not the Steelseries software will puzzle some purchasers. -Super light, but super fragile. You need to pick one up and open it a few times to really see what I mean. -The touch pad too responsive or swipes, but the actually clicks on the bottom require too much pressure for an average user. -No number pad. I like this, but some might complain if they are buying this laptop for productivity and not just gaming. -The ventilation pattern used is kind of dated looking and the top area around the power button is too flexible and honestly too big. -MSI does load it with bloatware, but you can delete most of it and you will want to keep quite a bit of it. Overall- I would definitely recommend the GS65 Stealth Thin 8RF-037 to anyone looking for the best all around gaming Ultrabook. It is like a Microsoft Surface, MacBook Pro, and Real Alienware (RIP) wrapped into one. It is a bit pricey, but the display itself, destroys the competition. It is sleek and sophisticated, unlike some competitors who are too scared to move toward portability instead of durability. Nobody buys a exotic car because it is durable, but they know how to take care of it, and respect it. That said. I respect the build of this notebook, which is going to be hard for many gamers to say the same. Of course it's not super durable; it weighs 4 pounds with a 14 inch chassis and 15 inch screen. You won't be disappointed unless something is wrong with the one you purchase, so check it out carefully. Overall - 9/10

For a hard core gamer such as my self this was the 1st laptop i got for games. I didn't expect it to way out perform my PC, but it is a few years old. Like all the reviews it gets hot, but it does not bother me, they make things for that. Games run way smoother and i run them all on max with out problems. Who know i would do 100 times better in CSGO, and whats the point of 4k with the 1080 at 144hz.

Absolutely satisfied with this laptop. Runs all my games at 70+ fps (Overwatch, Final Fantasy XV, Call of Duty). I needed a laptop that would handle the big workload of games but work for productivity purposes as I am a business professional. I love the discrete look and portability of the system. You get the best of both worlds and I HIGHLY recommend this. Sound is great. Battery life is top of the line.

    Insanely powerful thin and light

Best Buy overall has the best version of this laptop for the price. Every internal component in this laptop is super powerful. The 1070 gpu plays any game at max settings easily at 60fps+, the 16gb of RAM is more than enough for any game, and the 8th gen i7 handles an insane amount of tasks at once. I played Destiny 2 at max graphic settings for 2.5 hours and it stayed between 80-100 fps (depending on the activity in game) the entire time. You can have a AAA title, discord, and multiple tabs of chrome open with no noticable performance drop. The monitor is beautiful and has very small bezels. It looks vibrant and 144hz is absolutely game changing. I think the keyboard is pretty nice and I actually like the fn key placement. It also has amazing io. 3 usb 3.0 ports, full ethernet port, separate headset and mic jacks, mini displayport, and a thunderbolt 3 port. Also, I actually prefer optimus over gsync. Cons/advice I undervolted the cpu by 130mV and disabled turbo boost, and while playing a demanding game like Destiny 2, it still thermal throttles at 90°c. While that is hot, it didn't affect performance in a noticeable way. You also need to change the fan curve/settings in Dragon Center. The auto fan curve is far too weak. While it does get hot, the laptop has so much power in such a little package. It's honestly an engineering marvel/work of art. I've only had the laptop for a week, so I will update if something happens.

I did my research and this 'top was always in the short list of "Best Gaming Laptops" from sites I trusted. I didn't want to spend more than $2k on a new rig but I wanted at least a GTX 1070 with 16GB of RAM and 8th gen Intel chip. The Stealth Thin checked all the boxes and came in right at my budget. I immediately moved around the partitions and dual booted it with Ubuntu and have installed my deep learning workflow without too much trouble (watch out for secure boot with the Nvidia drivers). Right after testing my work setup I downloaded Steam and found that some of my favorite games (e.g. Stellaris) actually load faster in Ubuntu on this 'top than they did in Win 10. All around I am really pleased with my purchase. One of the only downsides I've seen is that the lid/screen flexes a bit as you open and close it. It seems a fair trade to have it be so thin and light but I'm always wary of it.

I'm in love with this laptop!! It's slim slik, light, and powerful! The design is beautiful. It packs a lot of power in a light and compact design, which is amazing. The battery life is great. The graphics are incredibly vivid which makes picture quality of the screen indescribable! The only downside is the fans are loud, but compared to all its upsides it really doesn't matter. Highly recommended!

Excellent balance of power and portability

I'm delighted with this laptop for a number of reasons, with only one inconsequential ding. Balance: I use it for both work and gaming, so I wanted to balance power with portability. Amazed at at how well MSi pulled this off! Light enough to lug through airports, small enough to work in an airplane seat (the Alienware I saw was out of the question!), but is still packing a GTX 1070! Performance: Aforementioned GTX 1070. Destiny 2 runs beautifully, I dusted off Doom and it does as well, and a brief run of Fortnite looked great. Plenty of RAM. And the SSD means a reboot is no longer an excuse for a coffee break. ;-) I haven't timed it but pretty sure it's sub 30 second for a full reboot. Appearance: It looks great but not over the top, so I can open it up in business meetings without undue attention (except those who properly appreciate it). But the logo and border on the laptop lid look sharp, and the keyboard lighting is awesome. Speakers: My only complaint is that the speakers aren't very loud, but at home I have external speakers and I'm getting a headset so this is still a solid 5.0. If you'll be running this solely standalone (no separate screen/speakers) then be aware of that, but I really doubt this will be significant to most folks. So again, overall a solid 5.0, I love this laptop. Bravo MSi and thanks for the great recommendation Best Buy!

Great light and thin gaming laptop!

Don't let the 4 stars make you skeptical. This is overall a great laptop, especially for the thin and light package that it comes in. The performance and form factor on the dollar is the best deal you can get compared to its competition like Razer blade 15 or Aero 15x. Its also a great looking laptop, especially from the outside. Not gamerish like most gaming laptops. Good build quality overall. My only gripe would be the screen is a little flimsy and the camera quality which isnt too great for the price you pay. Otherwise i definitely recommend this laptop for anyone looking for a high end but also stylish, thin and light gaming laptop.

This laptop replaced an older MSI that I had for nearly 6 years. The power and performance of this laptop for the value is just amazing. I can now play all of the latest games with great FPS! If someone is looking for a smaller thin portable laptop with great performance look no further. The keyboard and its illumination is great as well for low light gaming. Get this now!

I received my first GS65 a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, that unit was faulty. The area of the panel nearest to the trackpad would creak whenever I shifted my palms. Think audible creaking when typing. I sent it back for a replacement. However, I received a replacement from Best Buy and this device doesn't have a single flaw. Yes, the build isn't as good as something like a Macbook, but it's still suitable. The hinge isn't bad and neither is the flex on some parts of the laptop. The design is gorgeous, and it's not a computer I'll have to be ashamed of when I put it in more formal settings. Performance is, as expected, great. I can max out pretty much every e-sports title and get very close to max on other, more demanding games. Cooling isn't bad and the fans aren't irritating, but I highly suggest an undervolt to make things better. I'm running -160mV currently and my processor almost never goes above 84 degrees Celsius on high loads. My GPU has never gone above 75-80 degrees. Pretty good performance, and I'll consider further undervolts and maybe even repasting in the future. Despite my initial troubles with the laptop and having to replace it, I still give it 5 stars because of how easy it was to replace it and how satisfied I ultimately am with this device. Definitely a great buy!

Good laptop at one of the best price points

Immediately, I very much like the overall design and feel here, it's much more subdued than most gaming laptops, though the font on the keyboard still feels a bit odd. Build quality is very good, even with some flex near the power button and the screen. The keyboard is excellent with a good feel, and the backlight is nice and bright. Screen's the same, and despite being FHD instead of UHD or 4k, it holds up well with the high refresh rate and the ultrasmall bezels. Speakers are strictly OK, definitely not good for gaming, but you can manage most types of music with it. The touchpad looks nice with the surrounding gold but, as a person who prefers touchpads, it takes a fair bit of tuning and a lot of getting used to before it feels comfortable. Performance is *extremely* good, naturally, with the GTX 1070. It's good at cooling, and the noise gets to a medium level at worst, though I haven't tested it at particularly extreme loads. Battery life is the level you would expect for a gaming laptop, 2 hours on high loads and 3-5 hours on light loads. Overall, very good laptop with some fairly minor cons. Sidenote: For anyone looking to install Arch Linux on this thing, I have done it successfuly, though it does take a bit to make the touchpad gestures work.

    Excellent Laptop

I purchased this laptop for school, and I could not be happier with my decision. I did consider other options between the Razer Blade, Lenovo Y530, Dell XPS15 and Asus Zephyrus, however, the GS65 Stealth was most definitely the right choice as it was the best bang for your buck laptop. I was pleasantly surprised that the amount of hardware within the laptop did stand up to all the hype surrounding the GS65. The GTX 1070 and 8th gen i7 work beautifully for a laptop so thin. However, I did find a few gripes with the laptop in it's build quality and cooling system. Because I had paid two grand for a laptop, I did expect a solid build quality, however, there is some flex within the area near the power button and the screen does flex a little. These problems are minor as long as you take care of your laptop correctly. The cooling system is also a minor problem as it is only noticeable when the laptop is under stress. Under normal use, fans are quiet and the laptop itself is pleasant to touch. However, once serious gaming occurs, the fans do become quite loud and the chassis does overheat a little. These problems can fortunately be fixed by purchasing a laptop cooling pad. Overall, this laptop is an excellent purchase with many pros that outweighs very minor cons.

Super responsive keyboard, easy working touchpad, and the power button on the inside(And not on the outside like other MSI products) is killer! For this model, there is no better price point for all the features you get in a gaming laptop. The gameplay on the 144hz panel is unbelievable and the keyboard feels perfect. It's also a fantastic workhorse with rendering video and music production. I literally need no other computers or a gaming console. If you have the money, it's a fantastic investment.

    Solid GTX 1070 Laptop

At the price point and for these specs, this is a solid choice. After comparing this model to the usual suspects (there are plenty of write ups about this elsewhere), I decided to go with this model for the following reasons: - The steelseries keyboard feels great to type on. I know there are mixed opinions on the font, but I happen to like them. - Price is right. I found the Best Buy pricing very competitive - Thin and slim, just like the name says. But, the light weight actually look me by surprise. It's very light compared to the other laptops in this segment. If you're thinking about buying this laptop, consider the following negatives: - There are plenty of people talking about the creak when you press your palm down on the chassis. Mine definitely has this creak, but I decided it wasn't going to be a deal breaker. Overall, the construction of this laptop is plastic (not aluminum, like say, a macbook) so this creates a lot of flex in the chassis, but also contributes to the lighter weight. - The trackpad is not great. But this is a common problem for PC laptops. This is a gaming laptop though, so I'll be with-mouse 90% of the time. The other 10% when I'm on the road handling work emails, it won't be a big problem.

This laptop strikes the perfect balance between power and portability. I wanted something with muted styling that I can take to bed to watch Netflix while also being powerful enough to replace my gaming desktop. I was surprised to find that this laptop suits both perfectly. Great job MSI! I wish it had a NVME drive at this price but I will upgrade later.

Picked up this laptop a few days ago to replace my Dell Precision M3800. Previously, I've pretty much stuck with Dell Precision and XPS (when they weren't watered down). I mainly use my laptops for Photoshop, AutoCAD and (now) light gaming. I did a good amount of reading on the MSI GS series prior to purchasing so I was familiar with most issues some consumers were experiencing. I was rather surprised with the unit I received. Veeeery minor creaking on the palm rest (not from normal pressure). I was actually surprised by the build quality since I was expecting it to not be up to par. The display GS63 at Best Buy did not instill much confidence but you never know what floor models have been through. Instead of doing a fresh Windows install, I removed bloatware, disabled start up services, ran updates for Windows/hardware and undervolted via XTU. Also did a few other tweaks I found browsing reviews/Reddit etc. Laptop gets warm under heavy load (1080p max settings gaming) but the fans aren't as loud as some have reported. Still have yet to work with larger CAD files. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. Pricing is also huge plus since my previous Precisions have all been $2500-3000.
