Great Laptop for the Multiuse Gamer

I am a sales professional/gamer and I needed a laptop that will travel with me and perform on games like Witcher 3 and Doom (as well as future titles). I did a ton of research and had a hard time choosing between the GS65 and the Asus Zephyrus M. My main hesitations are that the GS65 could have problems with thermals and I don't historically like MSI's trackpads, also the Zephyrus M has the full 1070 and the venting to cool it. Ultimately I wanted a real battery and when I got my hands on the MS65 and I absolutely love this thing. Aesthetically, it is my favorite laptop on the market, the clean black with gold trip and vents is perfect for work. The I/Os on this thing is everything I will need in the future. The keyboard feels like a macbook and I love it for typing and gaming. I know a lot of people complain about the mouse, but I guess I am heavy handed, because I am happy with it. I spent 5 hours on Witcher 3 and it played beautifully with normal heat coming from the top and no heat around the keyboard, even still the fans didn't kick into overboost and were surprisingly quiet. I can't speak more highly of this thing.

    So far, so great!

At first I wasn't so sure with the track pad acting weird but post update everything is working great! I haven't done any extensive gaming on it yet but it runs everything fine for the amount of time I'm on it. Also a side note, this came with photo editing software which is my other reason for the purchase and its pretty decent when you pair it with the color calibration of the screen. Very satisfied so far!

Had an issue initially but overall very happy

The first one I bought of these I took out of the box and the fan was making a very loud clicking noise. I was really worried and pretty disappointed. I brought it back to the store and they happily took care of me on the spot. Now I have a perfectly working model and I couldn't be happier. My one other complaint would have to be no fingerprint reader or face unlock, but those are very minor qualms.

Perfect Computer for designing and animation

The MSI GS65 is the perfect computer for my college work. I do a lot of animation and designing and the computer keeps up perfectly. Apart from college work, the computer is a beast at gaming. The keyboard is very good and easy to type and the trackpad is really precise. Also, the selection of ports on the computer is perfect because I do not have to carry a lot of dongles like other competitors.

So far this computer is all I could have asked for

I will be using this computer for college and it surely is a great value. It runs at 144hz or at 60hz, the 144hz is so crisp and looks amazing. It runs Steam games great too. For the price and 1070 graphics card it is really nice. It also has great features with the keyboard which can show 8 million different colors.

This MSI is a great computer! I have been struggling to find a good computer for both college and my gaming needs. I previously had the razer blade pro 17.3 in Full HD, but the computer kept crashing while I played Fortnite. This computer is great and it seems to be working way better than my previous razer!

Costly, but absolutely incredible and well-rounded

Now, if you are entertaining the thought of spending $2,000+tax on a laptop, I'm sure that you are wanting every single aspect of it to meet the criteria you are looking for. Aesthetically, MSI made the right call to move away from black and red for their premium product here; it caters to a more mature audience and truly deserves "Stealth" in its name. The gold-trim is a subtle but oh-so-nice addition. Thin bezels make the screen feel so much more immersive and allows for a 14" chassis for a 15.6" screen (17" screen laptops, I'm expecting 15.6" chassis now). Per-key RGB is also pretty sweet to stare at for a few minutes before becoming consumed in whatever AAA title you're about to wreck with the hardware. Hardware-wise, this 5 lb. monstrosity has a GTX 1070, new 6-core i7, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD (though it is not NVMe, which is meh), and 144hz refresh rate display. Need I say more? Just be cautious of thermals. Repaste/undervolting may be your closest friends after seeing stock temperatures. Build quality is below average, considering its price point. Screen and chassis flex galore. If you travel a lot and/or have little control of your surroundings to protect it, you may want to opt for something heavier. Overall, this product easily deserves 5/5, despite its shortcomings on build quality and lack of an NVMe drive. It has everything that you would want in such a small form-factor.

    Great Value Gaming Laptop

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The MSI GS65 had all the things I was looking for: A mature look (not too flashy), powerful internals (GTX 1070 MaxQ and i7 8750H), Port variety (especially Ethernet port for when I play online), 144hz display, and not too bulky of a build. This computer is frequently compared to the 2018 RazorBlade 15, which is less value and more expensive due to branding. You have all the same internals, You dont get the ethernet port, battery life is similar, both are thin and sleek, both have 144hz displays, but the Razor is $200 more expensive. It's and excellent laptop and can be surprising quiet even when gaming. The cooler boost option makes it quite loud, but lowers the temps by at least 20 degrees. I love playing Overwatch with over 200 fps and then can switch to the Witcher 3 on ultra settings at 60fps. It is an amazing laptop worth the money if you want the power it has without giving up slimness and modern design. The gold is a great touch. The only minor downside is the build quality is slightly less than the Razor - certain spots on the machine you can kind of push in/twist where you feel like it should be more rigid, making it feel more fragile. But nobody I know is going around trying to twist their laptop displays so its not much of a dealbreaker. It is a great laptop and I believe it was a worthwhile purchase and I recommend it for anyone in the price range.

    Absolutely awesome laptop for trading

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Admittedly I have always longed for a gaming spec laptop for forex trading but was put off by the weight of the machines out there until my freshman son purchased the GS65 for college (and gaming by night) about a month ago. My old top of the line VAIO (+6 y.o.) needed replacing since it was freezing every time I would run eSignal (with multiple charts over multiple timeframes) combined with 15 or so tabs open in Google Chrome. The fan noise was super annoying as the machine gradually heated up. With the GS65 I can easily have 3 spreadsheets open in Excel, run Chrome, as well as have multiple eSignal charts open using multiple indicators with over 24 different time frames (with over 10 days of dynamic tick data) without even the fan kicking in(!) - in fact, I have only ever heard the fan 3 times over the month of so that I have had the machine! I won't mention the specs but I do find the 3x USB3.0 and 1x full sized HDMI ports convenient as well since my desktop is expanded over 3 screens. The only notable cons I might add would be the build quality (thin metal body; feels slightly flimsy and vulnerable) and the keyboard layout (some special characters located differently to my previous laptops), but both are something I am adapting to quite quickly. Overall a wonderful machine with incredible performance, and definitely one of my best buys!

This is my first PC/Gaming Laptop, and so far I love it! I will be looking to use this laptop as my main source of information in college, but for now, I am simply using it for gaming. So far it runs incredibly smoothly, and the quality is outstanding. So excited to have this laptop now, and I would definitely recommend looking into it as a future computer.

I have no real complaints on this laptop. Others have complained about the fan noise but honestly I haven't seemed to notice that the fans run that loudly. Anytime that the system is running hard enough for the fans to be a problem I would normally have a headset on anyway. Other than that the battery seems to keep me going for an extended period of time to that is nice.

I really appreciate the power and the relatively small form factor. Has a nice weight, feels solid. Display is gorgeous. Runs Creative Cloud programs no problem. In the future I might spring for the full 1TB SSD, but the 512 is a lot of data in its own right, you just may need to have thunderbolt capable externals for doing work on large projects. Good for the price!

    Good Hardware but Rocky Start

The computer has great performance and looks beautiful. However I had some issues first getting the laptop that makes me think something might happen down the line. The MSI software conflicts with Windows 10 and causes little bugs that can be frustrating. I had a problem with sound not coming out of the audio jack that required me to restore the laptop the 2nd day after I got it. I solved the issue since but it required a lot of research on my part scouring through multiple forums. Read the MSI review forums first before buying this and make sure you have the patience to work through the bugs before buying the laptop.

I got this laptop to edit videos primary but is very good if you would also like to play games. I edit adobe premiere so the speed of the processor and the GPU make it grate for making and editing videos .
