Better than expected

I needed to switch over to a Windows based system and after doing a ton of research opted for this laptop. Wow, I'm glad I did. It's a beauty! For what I'm getting an Apple computer would be double the cost, but it doesn't matter because apple laptops can't even play the games this thing can. It's also slim and light which makes for a great portable laptop for school. It's not too flashy which I wanted to avoid and has very clean lines. Love it!

A killer slim gaming laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.MSI designed a really nice package with the GS65 Stealth. Specs are great, the keyboard is nice with very even backlighting and the screen is absolutely fantastic. No discernible light bleed on this one ( 2nd one I tried, 1st one had noticeable light bleed ), with rich colors and deep inky blacks. It’s a remarkably svelte machine with all the bells and whistles, only let down by slightly fragile build quality (I had to tighten a screw to get rid of some creaking on the chassis). Overall a nice computer!

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, i bought the gs65-thin to replace my aging Lenovo Y70-70 touch. And i will say that this is a very capable laptop for the current generation of technology available. Possibly one of the best you can get for the footprint that it will occupy in your bags and on your desk. With that said.... i am not as impressed with it as i thought i would be. My Y70 is last generation and i have had it for close to 3 years now, i got it when it first came out. It’s graphics performance are not the top of the charts but it is still capable of playing even current games like GTA-V, fortnight etc. even though they are at the lower end of the settings, its fine... its a laptop, I wasn’t happy with the performance but it does what it needs to do: play games on the go. But this was the last gen mobile GPU’s that were cut down half powered versions of their big brothers in your desktop. The new generation (the 10-series nvidia chips) are supposedly identical to the desktop versions just smushed into a laptop. This is possible due to their newer architecture and lower power demands. The GS67 has a GRS-1070 in its svelte thin solidly constructed body, HOWEVER... it is the MAX-Q design version of the chip. Nowhere in any of the bestbuy online or in store advertising even hints at this fact. The max-q chips are effectively the same mobile design chip concept from the 900 series. They use significantly less power but also have significantly less graphical umph than the desktop versions. And the 1070 - MQ chip is no exception, its performance is rated slightly below a 780Ti and slightly above or below desktop 1060 (3G or 5G version dependent). With that out of the way... This laptop is impressive in its looks and feel, it is solidly built with good quality materials, a good 1080p screen (really? at least put a 1440p screen in these newer laptops people! Please!), responsive if not mushy trackpad, and enough usb’s for most people. It also has a fully rgb keyboard, thunderbolt, Ethernet, usb-c & wi-if/Bluetooth. My biggest sticking points with this laptop... HDD space, the screen resolution and the heat. 1. HDD... it has a respectable 512GB SSD, but that’s it. And to my understanding no way to expand this outside of an external HDD/SSD. This is a GAMING LAPTOP. It should have NO LESS than 1TB of usable storage for games and media files these days. You can get an external 1TB mini HDD for less than 50$ these days. With that cheap there is really no excuse to not make the laptop 4 ounces heavier and 1/10 of an inch thicker and throw a 1TB 5400 HDD in there. 2. Screen resolution. 1080p. Oh yeay, its 1080p... my 46” 10 year old TV is 1080p, my iPhone 7+ is even 1080p. At least put a 2560x1440 screen in a 2000$ gaming laptop. 2000$ is a lot of money to spend on a laptop. I can build a desktop with a monitor, keyboard and mouse for less than that and it will still perform as well as or better than the GS65. I don’t expect a 4K display in a 2k$ product, but at least put 1440p in future laptops, please!. 3. The heat... have you ever been gaming and think to yourself, I’m hungry... i wish i could fry me an egg on my laptop? Well with the GS65, now you can. After a short time playing games on this it gets soooooo hot, that i am truly scared to touch it for fear of getting a 1st or 2nd degree burn on my hands/fingers from how hot this thing can get. To its credit though, the gameplay performance is still smooth and enjoyable, if i could touch the keyboard that is. SO the cooling solution is at least doing its job and pulling the heat away from the GPU, its just not expelling it out of the ventilation and its seeping through the laptop body cooking your hands. I gave this a 3 star rating because of the three above factors, the 1070 that i paid for is a 1070-MQ, the storage space and the heat. I can live with and accommodate the HDD space, but the heat and gpu mislabeling i can not. IF the cooling solution was more effective and the 1070 was not a MQ i would have given a 5 star rating.

Awesome laptop for gaming on the go
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I upgraded from the MSI GS63 7RD laptop with the 1050 and the performance is like night and day. My minimum FPS in Farcry 5 is over 60 on ultra and that is plain awesome. I love the extra 30 watt hours on the battery compared to the measly 60 watt hours on the 7rd. I should be able to get 3.5 - 4 hours because of the bigger battery and more efficient processor which will be much better than the 2 hours I was getting on the other laptop. Great build quality and design. Awesome laptop for the gamer on the go.

Best form factor AND a gaming laptop!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With Nvidia's new MAX-Q GPU design you can get a full-sized GPU in a thin and small form factor laptop. MSI's color scheme on this laptop is pleasing to the eye as well, without too much over the top typical gaming branding. Thermals/fan noise is a little high during gaming, but that's to be expected with a laptop this thin. The 144hz IPS screen is really great and buttery smooth combined with the 1070. This is the best choice for a small light weight but still powerhouse gaming/productivity laptop! Love it!

Definitely worth the money.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For what you are getting in this laptop i'd say that the large price point is fairly reasonable. The chassis might be a little cheap because of the plastic build but that is necessary in keeping the light weight. With the high end Graphics card, 6 core CPU with turbo boost, fairly decent battery, half a TB ssd and 16 gb ddr4 ram it is definitely a powerhouse. I am able to do video editing with no issue and on battery lasting 4-6 hours depending on battery saving settings and have no issue doing web browsing, listening to music, and having many other programs open while still reaching the advertised "8 hrs of productivity." I would say that there are definitely other laptops that are a bit larger and heavier that cost much less but if you are looking for a professional looking thin gaming/productivity machine then i would absolutely recommend this laptop.

an AMAZING laptop if you want great gaming to go
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have wanted this laptop since it came out, and I have finally gotten it. It is sleek, beautiful and plays like a BEAST. The RGB keyboard looks and feels amazing, for me, the low travel keyboard feels great and comfortable. The laptop itself is light and thin enough so that I can put in in my backpack and not feel overheavy at all. it runs games easily and smoothly. I have seen people complain about the heat, but that has not been an issue AT ALL to me. I really love this laptop and highly recommend it.

144Hz and NVidia, no dongle bag, upgradable ++++
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Gives you plenty of machine for the price: On the plus side: 2 M.2 slots internally. 1 populated when I bought mine (512GB). As someone else pointed out, kind of tricky to upgrade yourself, and you will void the warranty. The reason is that when you remove the bottom the M.2 slots are on the "other side", So you have to remove a lot of cables to get to it. Bought a Samsung 960 pro that works fine. On the minus side: Hardware too new for working with cuda. So no tensorflow so far. Also a bit cheap to ship with Windows Home, upgrade (digital) 99 dollars. Better fan noice with new "D" version of BIOS. Drivers on the MSI site is useless (e.g. nvidia driver and synaptec, killer network devices very hard to get working if at all after fresh install. So make sure you use the MSI backup/restore utility if you are going to mess with it.

Beast of a laptop, Perfect for gaming
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Before owning this beast I was primarily on a desktop pc. I was running an i7-7700k and gtx 1070 which preformed leagues beyond what I needed it for. Now coming to the i7-8750h plus the 144hz screen blows my mind even further. The GS65 maintains stable framerates in games like R6S in order to get themost smooth, stable gameplay possible. I would absolutely recommend this laptop to friends and can't wait to continue with what this baby can do. Btw, this review was written on the GS65 :)
