I had been comparing this to the Razer 15 and Asus Zephyrus G14 and M15 models. I really enjoyed those other models, however, the keyboard placement is absolute garbage on all of them if you're going to be doing actual productive work outside of gaming. And the ASUS don't even come with a webcam, it's pandemic-2020 and majority of work conferences are online now, like what gives (they are much cheaper though). This laptop has a SteelSeries keyboard which I would recommend for those typing a lot. The keys are more tactial and have a larger service area for those with larger hands. Although the body frame is all aluminum, there is a plastic guard on the wrist-edge to enhance comfort and reduce typing fatigue. Most gaming laptop manufactures will omit the Home and Page Up/Down keys to make more room for larger speakers and such, however, I use those keys for work when i'm not gaming. Compared to the G14, I felt that 14 inches was pretty small for a gaming PC, but just slightly better than a Razer 13, for comparison. The issue was that the Ryzen 9 is overkill for gaming and most daily tasks, and it could only be paired with an RTX 2060, which is on the weaker side for FPS or any graphic intensive games, at least beyond 60Hz versus the panel's rated 144Hz. However, the G14's power-efficiency and battery life is unmatched. The Razer 15 was the same price on sale at the time (usually $1999) and aside from the unfavorable keyboard layout (and also color scheme), it only had an 80kwH battery versus the 99.9 on the MSI (which fun fact is .01 kwH below the TSA limit for airplane travel). The only benefit I could find was that the Razer 15 had better thermal performance. Also that model only comes with a 512GB M.2 SSD, versus the MSI's 1TB. I strongly recommend a good laptop cooler if you will be hardcore gaming for more than an hour at a time. I peaked at 85 C after a couple rounds of Modern Warfare (unlocked FPS, High/Ultra settings, Ray-tracing On). Even after locking it to 80 fps, and lowering the settings to High, I was still seeing around 80 C, and eventual brief throttling in Warzone. The throttling wasn't bad in my opinion, but it depends on the type of gamer you are. For example, I lost about 20-25 fps mid-match for about 5 seconds and was still able to get kills just fine. I was able to get about 2-2.5 hours on battery unplugged while gaming, just to test it out, which is actually above average depending on settings. For productive work I was able to squeeze closer to 4-5 hours before reaching below 10%. This was on the Battery Saver pre-set and about 50% brightness. About 1 week into owning it, I desired to add more RAM for my work-related tasks, so I bought 2 of the 32GB PNY 2666MHz modules. The factory clock is 2933MHz, but only 16GB capacity. Technically speaking, the slower, higher capacity RAM didn't change the gaming performance but it was an easy, worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. It cost me about $250, 32GB(2x16GB) would have been under $180 depending on the speed. Upon looking at the motherboard, it appears you can add an additional 1 or 2 M.2 drives. For those curious, the cheapest 2TB M.2 SSD I could find was the InLand brand from Micro Center, also on Amazon for $189. However, WD Blue and Sandisk 2TB will occasionally be on sale for under $200, which is a great deal. Especially if you will be storing many AAA titles at once. Call of Duty MW - 100+ fps on High/Ultra GTA V - 60Hz locked but absolutely beautiful on Ultra and smooth for a going on 7-year old game. Rocket League - 240fps easily Fall Guys - 240fps Minecraft - over 100 fps on max settings I plan on playing Borderlands 3 and Shadow of TR for the RTX goodness, but I have no doubt it will perform well. I paired it with the G502 Wireless mouse and found that it was a perfect match. I also tried the G903 Wireless (not the best for FPS games) and Corsair M65 Wired (too small for my hands and well, wired). This does have a Killer wireless chip which I was really impressed with both wired and wireless, something I haven't experienced before. Other than running pretty hot, this is my favorite laptop of 2020. All that horsepower in a 4 pound body, no complaints whatsoever. Stunning screen, stellar performance.
