This google hub with the nest camera is simply the best device as it serves as a hub and also a nest camera which is very cool.

    Truly awful sound, clunky touchscreen.

Despite being shiny and offering the google nest services, I'm reviewing this piece of hardware specifically not the entire google nest ecosystem. Sound quality is pretty bad, it has that typical "trying to make a tiny speaker produce too much bass" try-hard sound and I just wish they would stop. There is no line out on this or any other google nest product that I know of so connecting to a better speaker necessitates bluetooth. Disappointing considering how bad this device really sounds. I'm trying not to be an audiophile dork here but I just switched from using an Alexa device through a Marshall Stanmore speaker and even at low volumes this Google Nest Hub Max is a major downgrade let's not even talk about loud jamming. Setup is a little weird because it requires use of an extra device (a phone or tablet) when this thing already is basically a tablet, why can't I do setup directly on it? The setup process didn't take long but it felt like a clown show for the entire duration. Look here, now look there, now look back... Small nitpick maybe but this is supposed to be a premium product from a globally dominating company. Swiping from the bottom or side to access menus is not very responsive, and also some primary controls really should have physical buttons like volume and menu. First order accessibility is good ergonomics and this does not have good ergonomics. The screen itself is bright and highly legible, and responsiveness of voice control is fast and seems to work well. So yeah I know I'm being harsh here. That's the point. This thing already frustrated me not half an hour into owning it and since it's impossible to connect it to a better speaker my options are return it or accept a downgrade in the principal reason I bought it. Lame!

    Not what I thought

What I thought I was getting: A hub that allows me to view all the activity from my cameras; The Ring and Nest cameras and I was hopeful that it would show “Blink” but not shocked if it didn’t. It didn’t. What I got: A locked iPad knock-off with a built in speaker that requires a secret service clearance and ONLY uses a google email to allow you to use the unit. I do NOT have a google email but the unit forces you out of all of your nest products if you do not have one. I had to use my sons google account which I feel was a breach. It accessed all his photos and music YouTube playlists and neither he or I was happy about that. I HATE how google tries to force you into their platform! You are very limited on what cooking websites it allows you to access and you can only access them via voice command. I was very frustrated with it. The “Nest” camera that comes built into the unit records live activity and keeps the history, but for my exterior Nest camera it only showed live activity so I was unable to review the activity. Also while live streaming my front porch camera activity, it would constantly glitch. #Fail. The clarity and sound was good but it must be plugged in at all times making it useless if you want to view activity from - say, your front porch, while you’re in the backyard. It does not charge or allow use of any kind without being plugged up. I’m not sure what people are using this item for, but I think it’s better to get a lower model iPad and a stand and download an app that allows split screens to view camera activity. This item was absolute trash to me. I returned it and was happy to be rid of it. I am not sure it deleted all of our personal information when we returned it and the Best Buy clerk didn’t know either. Stay away from this item. Google/Nest, do better and stop trying to control everything!

Does Not Work With Gsuite Accounts

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Got this to display photos and replace our Amazon Echo in our kitchen. Guess what! It can't replace the Echo. Why? The Nest Hubs don't work entirely with Gsuite accounts. Do you pay to use Gmail with your own domain? Well, guess what—your paid Gsuite account won't work with most features of the Nest Hub. It DOES do photos, which wasn't intuitive, but once set up does work. But—irony of ironies—Gsuite accounts don't allow the Nest Hubs to (wait for it) control Nest thermostats! Waaaa? That's right, my Nest Hub Max, set up with my Gsuite account, can't control my Nest thermostat... but the Amazon Echo can! Johnny, tell the lovely people what else the Nest Hub Max CAN'T do with Gsuite accounts: 2) can't use the calendar and 3) can't use third-party lists. So I guess the Echo is sticking around because 1) it can control the thermostat and 2) it can add groceries to the app we use for shopping. Oh, and the camera: only good for Google Duo calls. What's Google Duo? That's a good question... In hindsight, I would've saved LOTS of money and just gotten the smaller Nest Hub and used it only as a photo frame. At least at that price point I wouldn't have had buyers remorse regarding the lack of features.

    Great except recipe feature

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This product has been great, but their recipe feature still needs a lot of work. Yes it will read the recipe to you which is great! But how you store your recipes are clunky, you can't easily get to them outside of the hub, and you can't categorize or search inside the google cookbook. So if you have hundreds of saved recipes you have to scroll through to find the one you want. Lastly, you can't save your own recipes. I tried Google Keep which will open the recipe, but it will not read you the recipe. I hope they work on making this feature better because in concept it is great, but poorly executed.

    A long ways to go

Got this as a gift from my wife and I was excited to have it for two main uses. 1. Use with cameras I have installed from Wyze and Eufy to be able to watch a live stream from my kitchen and 2. To have it double as a digital photo frame to display our family pictures. Well, as it turns out, the cameras constantly cut out and often Wyze won’t even pull up at all. When they are up, the latency is 5, 10, 15, sometimes more than 20 or 30 seconds. I found that it really only works well with my Nest Hello doorbell (maybe other Nest cameras work good too?) As for the digital picture frame, google does not scale the photos to fit within the frame, so 90% of your pictures are zoomed in and cut off. They did fix it so portrait pictures will now scale and fit in the frame, but google has done nothing to address the pictures that are landscape (like if you select a background picture/wallpaper for your computer, you can choose to center, stretch, tile, fit, etc.; google doesn’t give you any of these choices and instead your pictures that are displayed are cut off on the edges and you cannot do anything to change it). Finally, my three year old son is able to ask it questions and pull up videos and pictures. Even though it has voice recognition, google does not have any options to filter who can use it. Simply put, I don’t want my three year old to be using google home assistant right now. This should be fixed immediately. So, 2 stars since it looks and sounds good and works well with Nest Hello. Otherwise, zero stars on functioning with other cameras, using as a digital photo frame, and being appropriate with young children. Also, zero stars on customer service as they do not try to correct deficiencies and only continue to recommend options and “fixes” that do not work.
