I purchased this thermostat in an attempt to assist in reducing energy consumption.
Prior to my purchase I went to the website and completed their initial online assessment to ensure it would work with my wiring.
On installing, had nothing but error messages. Thought it might be a defective product. Called their service line. The service person spend almost an hour on the phone with me, attempting to assess the issue.
After that time, the service person for Nest said it was an issue with my wiring. And I should call at tech to come out and try installing.
I thought, possible still defective item, and exchanged for another new thermostat. Same product.
Called my AC man. He came attempted installation. Same issue. Nest claims "there isn't enough power coming in on the yellow wire."
This according to the tech, shouldn't be. As the actual power coming in, is provided by the red wire, or hot wire.
I purchased this product after reading all kinds of great reviews. None actually stated any problems.
Be careful, this product just doesn't work well.

I purchased this for me new home I built this year. The thermostat that I originally had was meant to be energy efficient. In my case it was not. My electric bill was so high! I then bought the Nest for my upstairs unit to test it. I was skeptical about the install as I have never done anything like this ever. It was the easiest thing to install. The only problem was the unit was dead and needed to be charged with micro USB first. Set up was very simple and easy as well. So far my AC is not always running. Nest learns very quickly how we like the temp set and make adjustments as needed. I really love controlling the Nest with my iPhone or iPad when in bed or watching movies. I am so happy with this unit that I will be purchasing one for my downstairs and my business.
If you really want to save some money, this is what you need. It may cost a pretty penny at first, but the return is even greater. For people who don't want to install it yourself, Nest offers concierge install for $119.

I have had my nest since January of 2015! I would not have another thermostat ever! I have read reviews of other smart thermostats and could not find one to compare with this one. The set up was very easy! I know nothing about heating, cooling, or electrical stuff. I simply took a picture of my old wifi and sent it to next and they send me a personalized diagram of all the wiring for my nest. It took about 10 min all together. I love that you can sync the nest with the hue lights. I'm going to purchase the smoke detector soon as well as the wemo lights to see how they sync. When my nest detects no one is home it turns the lights out for me! Again thank you nest!!

Modern and Handy gadget

This thermostat does what it's intended to do, plus a whole lot more. Yes it is just a Thermostat, and it is also an expensive one. But take a moment and look at what you get. For one, it is unlike any thermostat out there. It's design is modern and sleek. You get a lot of convenient functionalities, and installation is not difficult. I'm not an electrician, and was able to install this thermometer in 20 minutes. It even comes with optional backplates and new wire labels that I used to replace my old worn out ones. Controls are simple, and the dial makes it easy to scroll through the settings. Most techies and gadget freaks will not encounter any difficulties using this thermostat. Compared to other competitors, the NEST looks a lot better, and more intuitive. So let's take a look at the good and bad aspects of this gadget.
The Good:. It learns your schedule, and adjust accordingly. You can tailor a schedule that is more concise compared to say, a 7 day programmable thermostat. Nest will let you adjust a schedule temperature setting using an app, and tailor the schedule all the way down to 15 minute increments. You can control Nest remotely, and it works well with the upcoming smoke / co alarm.
The Bad: Wish it came with a supplied USB cable. They could have included one for what they're charging. The USB cable is used to charge the NEST. It is also not compatible with every furnace, or routers. There is a page on their site to see which routers are not compatible with NEST.
So I recommend this thermometer to those looking for the latest and most innovative products available.

Installation caused $500 of ac repairs. Would not turn off compressor. Customer service was responsive but was a pain to work with and wouldn't send me a replacement unit to confirm it was the device. Returned it to Best Buy and got my money back. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

We replaced a 20+ year-old thermostat that wasn't working well anymore with the nest, and we are incredibly glad to have done so. My husband installed it himself and found it pretty easy to do. I find the UI on the thermostat to be pretty good -- sometimes the lack of buttons does make things a little more awkward than necessary, but it is pretty intuitive and easy to control. I especially enjoy the auto away feature -- it works very well, enough so that it does not pick up our cats as us being home, which is something I was concerned about. The remote control of the thermostat with an app (we use the iOS version) is also excellent. The recent update to 4.0 of the software was a bit awkward since it brought drastic UI changes, but once you figure out where everything is, it's pretty graceful. We almost control the nest more through the app than the unit itself even when at home. Finally, I also very much appreciate the energy report. I find it really useful to see how long the heater or AC ran on certain days since it is meaningful feedback as to what certain temperature settings translate to in real world usage.

Purchased the nest to help with energy usage. Install was very easy and it came with all the necessary equipment. Setup took 20 minutes and in less than a week, it was already learning our patterns. The Nest app makes remote adjustments easy. No more coming home to cold house in Wisconsin winters!

I researched this and other smart thermostats for about a year and read review after review after review. Like you reading this now I was hesitant and heard the horror stories of pipes freezing and this thing being buggy. However I decided after all the mixed reviews to take the plunge. I live in a single family home in New England with one thermostat for the entire home and this took exactly 10 minutes to install. It fit nicely into the area that held my older digital thermostat and I added the base plate and connect the two wires and presto this thing was up and running. Now so far it is October and the weather is not freezing cold yet and this thing is trying to learn my habits etc, however I set up a schedule anyway but not sure I will need it. The ease of use for this device was unreal and I can see why so many people like it. It even looks awesome on the wall and I processed a $100 credit from the electric company as a rebate which helped to offset the cost.
What I do like so far is the iPhone app and the website which make this so easy to use and set up anyone could do it. Even the most complicated systems seem like they would be a snap. I will keep a watch on this as the weather gets colder to see how it works and hopefully I have no issues. I would recommend this at this point to anyone since digital thermostats are a thing of the past and I cannot see Honeywell catching up to this anytime soon. Take the plunge, go buy one! I may get the Nest protect but so far that looks full of bugs.

Although I have not tried the new Honeywell Lyric (Apple & Honeywell's counter to the Nest), I have used and enjoyed my Nest thermostat in my home for the last two years. The Nest paid for itself with the money we saved in the first 6 months of use!
I just bought my second for the addition we built onto our home. If you have a dual-zone house, the two Nest thermostats will synchronize with each other to help regulate the temperature in your home better. The second Nest is replacing a Trane digital touch screen thermostat because it would not automatically switch between heating and cooling. The Nest does.
Being able to adjust the Nest's heating and cooling settings via its app is a real bonus. The second Nest is being installed in an in-law suite we added to the house. My mom will be able to adjust the temperature right from her bed without having to get up and walk down the hallway to adjust.
I highly recommend the Nest. It will pay for itself in no time and your house will be much more comfortable in the long term.

Hookup was easy and took about 30 minutes (i never installed a thermostat before) The video on Nest website was very helpful. I did use the backplate to cover up holes from previous thermostat. You can have a set schedule for the thermostat or let it learn by itself based on motion detected in front of the thermostat. I like the easy to use app and user interface on the themostat. So far its easier to use than our old mercury thermometer.

Bought and installed the Nest back in May, it was easy to install and setup. All-in-all about 15 minutes from opening the box to running it on my iPhone. So far it has been working great and we are saving money on our energy bills, will pay for itself in no time. After the first week I haven't touched the unit as it learns our preferences. The iOS app is easy to use and can adjust the temperature from anywhere.

Though I may say that price maybe the only thing bad with this product it could easily pay for itself in a couple of months if you pay attention to it and really try to conserve your energy usage.
Now my situation maybe different from others. The electricy plan that I am currently under allows for me to get free usage between the hours of 9p-6a every day. So Nest has learned that I want the AC to turn on as so as 9p comes around and turn off as soon as it is 6a. So through out the night I have the Nest at 65 degrees so that the temperature of the apartment I am stays cooler through out the day limiting to almost no use of the US/Fan when at work. Now a cool feature for the Nest is that you can set it AWAY or it will learn through a senser on the Nest that no one is walking by it and it will assume you are away. When it does that it will automatically set itself to away. You can set a high temperature so the AC kicks on so your place does not get so hot or a low temperature so it does not get so cold.
Brass tax of this is I have had it now for three months. June through August. In the Great state of Texas, It gets hot. So good measure of how well this thing works. I did get the Nest about middle of June.
No Nest May: 850 kWh at $92.85
June: 830 kWh at 86.10
July: 783 kWh at $62.23
August: 692 kWh at $55.06
Now this time last year my bill was closer to $100 plus. So in all if I keep up with this then I will have offset the cost of the Nest. So in all if you have the cash to spend and want to save money I would say go for it.

EZ to install. Took awhile to,find wireless network but finally did after a couple tries. Simple setup. Really like the Auto Learn feature. House is heated to the temp or cooled to the temp ( depending on season) when we get up in the morning after setting temp a few times upon getting up and started for the day. Furnace seems to run a lot less since replacing the older Yo-Yo style thermostat. Love setting temp or checking the temperature via my smartphone or iPad. Also tells you when you will save the most energy when you set a temp and the green leaf displays. Cool looking thermostat and will pay for itself after a few years. Also learns when you are home and away. After a few weeks you never have to actually touch the thermostat.

We gave this as a housewarming gift (pun intended) to our son. They love it. It was easy to install, does everything they hoped and is just cool to have. Warms the house up in the morning as they wake up, controls a cooler temp during the day while the house is empty and then warms it again before they get home! Great gift!
