System doesn't allow manual adjusting when cold
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This system doesn't allow for manual programming when cold. This is a problem in MN, where it often is cold. Due to it's "intelligent programming," (ha) - it won't allow you to adjust or increase the heat because, the program is not set for heat for several hours. So, it's 63 in our house today and it won't turn on the heat to 70 for 1.25 hours because that's what the program says. Resetting and adjusting the system profiles and settings hasn't worked. My husband is an engineer and has tried everything. Ridiculous system.

THE THERMOSTAT TO OWN
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.the nest 2.0 is a great product for numerous reasons, but one of the most crucial is how it's able to learn your preferred temperature "comfort-zones" not only will it help you cut back on your energy usage via the LEAF which pops up once an energy-efficient temperature has been selected, but it looks much better than the bulky white rectangular piece of plastic on your wall! the nest is simply an awesome product!

Great Hobby to keep running, but otherwise sucks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nest is a slick looking thermostat with great remote control potential. Problem is that it does not reliably stay connected to the internet on many (not all) WIFI systems. This is frustrating enough, but, it does not even reliably command the heating of the house. My unit locked up several times. And it got worse.....Nest pushed out a new release of software (end users do not get warned or are offered a choice to install new software or not) that totally fouled up the thermostat and all the sudden it would 'freeze' once a day and then need restarted to get back up to temp. I could not trust it to leave the house alone for more than a day. Mine was professionally installed and after two service calls, professionally de-installed. The installers, who installed my furnace and heat pump at the same time, said that they believe the Nest was OK, but not compatible with the new furnace...this is a new major brand furnace and heat pump! And FYI, there is no emergency heat capability for heat pump owners so when the unit fouls up, it gets cold...very cold. Read the Nest forums before buying and ask lots and lots of questions.

Watch out for killer updates
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had my Nest since Spring of 2013 when my previous ancient T-stat finally started going haywire. Well it had lasted for decades. I upgraded to a Gen 2 Nest and liked the features and flexibility. Going in I was worried about putting an important device like my T-stat on the web but enjoyed the ability to make changes while away. I had read about inaccurate temperature readings, but proceeded with the purchase - after all, if it's too warm I turn it down, too cool turn it up and never mind that the numbers might be a little off. I even had an issue with my furnace - a faulty controller board, that had been misdiagnosed by a heating professional. He told me it was the T-stat so I called Nest and they had a replacement on the way right away. Before the unit arrived I had already replaced the furnace controller and the original Nest T-stat was working fine, so I returned the replacement. But this morning I awoke to a cold house at 3 am. I don't know how long the furnace had been off. The Nest Gen 2 did not wake up when I approached and when I hit the button some graphics started swirling around before it displayed 'UPDATING SOFTWARE' with a progress line creeping across the bottom of the screen. After a few minutes the line was filled, but the screen just froze like that. I went to my phone and found that I could access the T-stat and that the heat was back on. After sunrise, when I called support to get my stat back up and clear the 'UPDATING SOFTWARE' message, the guy said that it happens sometimes - that the T-stat can require physical intervention after an update is pushed and it may not control the temperature until the button is pressed. So now I'm thinking I have a $250 paper weight. OK, so what if I was out on vacation when this update was pushed out and my T-stat was dead for days in below freezing weather? Your T-stat is too important a device to have this kind of bug. I have issues with the Nest company on many levels. 1. Why are updates being pushed to my device without a notice to me? After all, they are able to get the monthly usage newsletter to me. They know how long my furnace and air conditioner have been on. 2. Why is a potentially crippling update even sent to my T-stat during cold winter months when a failure to activate the furnace can lead to major water damage if the pipes freeze and break? I was not given the option to opt out of the upgrade if I was happy with the way the unit was performing. 3. What happens if I experience damages to my home or business because this product fails to perform? I could be facing serious financial losses if the pipes froze in my house while I was away. If this software update glitch had happened just a few weeks ago when I was away on vacation, we could have come home to massive water damage since Denver saw record cold temperatures while we were away. 4. Will any of the online features of the Nest T-stat still work after the company goes out of business? Since the company puts its web site between your mobile device and your thermostat, when the web site goes away, so will your ability to remotely control your thermostat.

Expensive and impossible to easily tell the temp
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Installation was pretty simple. The remote feature is great and it's ability to monitor whether you're home or away can reduce energy consumption. My biggest compliant is with the display. What's prominently featured is the target temperature. You can't easily tell at a glance what the current temperature is. You have to try and read little notches in a dial and estimate what they mean.

Best thermostat for a modern home
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was easy to install.... Had easy initial setup including wifi connections. .... After this I registered on the nest site and then used the website to configure and customize. I know that there are app for ios and android but my 3 yr old son has access to all devices so not installed on them..... So far no issues...........

Nest looks great - just doesn't work
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The nest looks great, and if it worked would be a fine thermostat. I've also had touch screen programmable Honeywell / Trane thermostats in the past. Those had all of the basic functionality you need, but the interface wasn't as slick, nor the units as good looking on the wall as the nest. After checking compatibility on the nest site, and installing the thermostat, the thermostat began discharging and going offline about 6 months after purchase. The uneducated support tech I dealt with on my last call sealed the deal. As another reviewer stated, it's a great thermostat if you need another hobby, which I don't. I'm going to go back to a reliable programmable thermostat for half of the price.

great product, software updates should help
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nest is easy to use, easy to install, easy to program. I especially love the wifi connectivity and being able to control it from my phone. My one complaint is that sometimes the learning function"learns" a preference too quick and programs what was intended as a one off change as a regular change. The software update should help that.

The most brilliant invention since the car!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Enough said, really. This genius device has cut our energy consumption by over half in just two weeks. It is genius and so are the people within the company. I can't wait to buy stock when they have their IPO!

Major Wifi Issues
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this product on 6/12/13. Setup was a breeze. My biggest issue is the wifi connectivity. Once the nest goes into sleep mode I'm unable to pull it up via my phone or computer. It will not come back online until I walk over to the thermostat and wake it up. What's the point if having this wifi thermostat if I can't use it when I'm away from my house? Nest support is not very helpful either. They have very few suggestions as to how to fix the issue. Its to bad as the thermostat looks great. I want to love it, but this wifi issue is a deal breaker. Looks like it will have to go back..

Apple Nest
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This product was great for a month. Then our climate changed from 38 degrees to 80 degrees. I turned it to heat/air and even when I reset it and programmed it for only heat, all I could get was air even though the temperature dropped to 32 again. I froze for a weekend, then had the HVAC tech come and when he could find anything wrong with the unit but said it wasn't changing over I helped him put on the old thermostats and then he asked for $300. He basically charged me so that I could train him on the Nest! Now I'm about $600 out for this and waiting for a replacement. I sure hope it works but it will have to save energy fast to pay for itself. Great concept.

Bad software
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Breaks constantly, changes temperatures at it's own discretion. Does not follow set schedules, basically doesn't do anything a thermostat is supposed to do
