It's nice, but it could be better

I got this on sale at Christmas, and it sounds better than the first generation Home Mini that my daughters have. However, we cannot both play music from the same Google Play music account at the same time even with music that I own. They say that this is industry standard, but it still seems crazy to me since if I owned multiple CDs and two CD players, I could definitely listen in more than one room at the same time. Also, if you don't have a YouTube Music subscription, you can't request particular songs even if you own them. If I ask it to play "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner, it will reply with something along the lines of, "That song is only available for YouTube Music subscribers, but here is a playlist based on Foreigner." I can, however, use a phone and the cast feature to send a particular song to the Nest Mini, but then it becomes a little less useful than a Bluetooth speaker in the sound department since not all apps support this feature. In other areas, it excels, though. You can ask it for weather, news, or other any information that you would ask Google Assistant. Still, if I have to have my phone handy to cast music, I could just use the phone to ask questions...

Great sound, easy and fast setup. Speaker groups works way better than Alexa. No sound drop outs like I was getting with Echo and finally I can do Youtube Music to speaker groups!

Great product at a great price. Simple and reliable to use. Sound quality very good from a small speaker. I purchased it as a gift. I already have 3 in my own home. I highly recommend this product.

This was easy to set up and connect to my music streaming services, which I use it mostly for. Google easily recognizes my voice and made it simple to do everyday things.

Easy to setup and use. Loud for a small speaker and has good bass. Feels a bit heavier than the 1st generation. The soft touch plastic or rubber used for the bottom half of the speaker feels more premium than the previous Mini.

I am enjoying my new Google Nest Mini more and more such that I have bought 2 more. The sound on this 2nd generation mini is much improved over the 1st generation version, and I have four of those. (Those 4 are retired, just like I am). I use my minis mostly for listening to music in my two bathrooms and in my dining room. I have one problem with them however. I have being using the new "Move Music" command as I move around my apartment. I can move music to my mins with no problem, but I can't move music from the minis. I don't know if I have a setting set wrong or if the mins have not been updated to execute this command. I think it is more likely a software problem. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. It is just a little frusrating. This coomand works just fine with my other Google devices. It is not the end of the world that the minis have this problem. I am working around it in the meantime.

This is the 4th mini we have in our house. We love being able to send messages to our kids using them and setting it to play music on 'whole house'. We also use them for timers, alarms, and turning Philips hue lights on/off.

We purchased three of these as part of a home internet upgrade. As part of our Google Nest WiFi we’ve achieved whole home sound system that sounds great. Easy to set up and use. Would recommend to anyone.

I already had one, so I wanted another to pair to get stereo audio in my bedroom since setting up a true set of speakers or soundbar wasn't really an option. These work great for my purposes, but I do wish Google would do something to enable me to match the lag between audio and video on youtube so these wouldn't be up to 2 seconds behind videos. I've also noticed when I try to stream youtube content to the stereo pair that the pairing can fail without warning. Switching to Pandora, I never see that issue. Why would Pandora be seamless and a Google owned App break their own product? Beyond me.

Hi BuiltTough, we appreciate your insights. We're sorry to hear about the audio lag when stereo pairing Nest Mini.

It was a great idea to try another streaming app to isolate the issue. If you haven't tried yet, we recommend unlinking and relinking your preferred music streaming app with your Google Nest account. You can follow our help article on how to link your music services and set your default service here: - Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
      - Open the Google Home app.
      - At the top right, tap your account.
      - Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to Nest Mini. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
      - Go back to the home screen, and at the top left, tap Add Music.
      - To choose your default service, tap the music service you'd like to use. Assistant will use this service when you say “Hey Google, play music.”
      - To link functionality for your preferred streaming app, you'll need to link your accounts.
To connect your account, tap a music service > Link account > sign in or sign up for the service and follow the in-app steps.
      - To unlink an account, tap Unlink > Unlink account.

Awesome little speaker that works so well with my home automation. It can play music with great sound and also change my lights, lock my door and work as an alarm clock and calendar. For the price point it’s a great buy!

I have this hooked up in the bathroom and is great for listening to music or podcasts while getting ready for work or bed. Doesn't take up that much space as it's pretty small. Clear sounding speaker.

Works great for voice control of smart lights and thermostats. No more stumbling around in the dark or getting up to turn off the forgotten light. Has good sound when playing music and google assistant works well. I grouped with our google hub to provide room to room music. Thinking about a couple more for home wide music.

You're only limited by your imagination (and Matter/Google's ecosystem, and software library maintenance, and the tech economy's hardware offerings). Anyways, the point is: yes, voice activation and automation for various things does improve your quality of life if you set it up properly. For me the biggest three things have been: Google Newsstand, Spotify, and voice-activated lights, and setting reminders for the next morning has been nice, too. That said, you can get all that with your phone using the Google Home and Google Assistant apps, so what's the big deal? Not fussing with your phone or keeping it in your pocket all the time, and having a nice enough speaker with no bass channel so you don't annoy your neighboring apartment or roommate. So, who should buy it? Anyone with a small amount of disposable income and 600+ sq ft residential area, and anyone with a smaller residential area who also wants an okay speaker but doesn't really know what to get and doesn't want to do a lot of research or pay more for a JBL. Bad things! Doesn't hold a conversation even with Gemini, doesn't work with Audible because of Amazon being a doof about Echo/Alexa, and you will have to train yourself to make use of it and commit to giving it a task once a day at first just so that you don't forget about it for months or longer.
