I also learned the long way, that tapping the middle, turns the speaker on or off. When I do give Google a verbal order to stop playing the speaker, it doesn't always obey my commands, and I have to yell really loud so the Mini Google can hear me.

Google Assistant might activate even if you don't say “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” when it detects something that sounds similar. Also, it might not activate when you say “Hey Google” or “Ok Google,” particularly in a noisy environment. Retraining your Nest speaker to better recognize your voice, and adjusting the Hotword sensitivity may be helpful. You may follow the steps on these help articles:

Besides controlling the volume by voice or by touch, you can also adjust the volume of the Google Assistant, your media, timers, and alarms using the Google Home app. Here’s how:
- Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your display.
- Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
- To adjust the volume, tap Media .

Posted .Hi Djay, thanks for letting us know about the issue. We're sorry to hear that Nest Mini started getting slow when responding to your voice commands.
If you haven't tried yet, resetting Nest Mini may be helpful with the issue. This process will erase all data and you may need to set up your account again. To reset, check on the side of your device, switch the mic off. The lights will turn orange. Press and hold the center of the Nest Mini, where the lights are on top. After 5 seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process. Continue to hold for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.
We also recommend retraining Nest Mini using the Voice Match feature. This will help improve voice recognition and identify different accounts for your device, especially if you are sharing Nest Mini with family members.
