false alarms with no easy way to shut off
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased 3 units to replace old smoke detectors in order to add CO2 benefit. I chose this alarm because with vaulted ceilings I like the idea of waving off false alarms and also I loved the idea of the app with the battery status before being woken up by an annoying beeping for a low battery...which has happened. Installed very easy, setup was very easy. My problem came about 2 months after I purchased the alarms. As I mentioned one of my big reasons for purchasing this particular model was that with vaulted ceilings it is hard to access the alarm if there was a false alarm and changing the backup battery isn't convenient, so when the low battery alarm goes off in the middle of the night, you are getting up and changing the battery on a ladder while you are half asleep. 2 weeks after purchase they disabled the wave off feature for the alarm because of problems. I thought, not big deal, they will update the software when they have a fix. I have never had a false alarm so very little risk. At 2 months after purchase I received a false alarm warning (not the alarm, the pre-alarm voice) on my master bedroom unit at about 11 PM, I tried waving it off, but obviously that didn't work because that was disabled, so I drug out a ladder and pressed the button to shut it off, but I kept getting verbal warnings and app warnings. so I called Nests 24 hour support. He said the continued warnings meant it would be going off shortly and the only way to stop that would be to unwire it...so back up the ladder I went...after going to the basement and shutting off the power. I unwired the unit, I used a can of air to blow out any dust as directed, because he said that might be the problem as I had the ceiling fan on...it could have forced dust into the sensor. Wired it back up and that worked for about 5 minutes, I still had him on the phone....so I told him to hold and unwired it again. I casually mentioned we had had our first warm day of the spring and he said how warm....and I said it was about 82 in my room. He asked what I thought the temp was by the alarm since he new it was on a vaulted ceiling, so up the ladder with an indoor thermometer, it was 85. He said that was probably the problem the heat was setting of the alarm...to which I replied what heat, 85 isn't that hot compared to a fire and I usually don't turn my air conditioner on until it was almost 90. He said it uses heat to also identify a fire, maybe this had a bad sensor and I could send it back and they would send me a new one. I asked if he would let me do that in a couple weeks because I wanted to swap alarms with one of the other units and see if that was an issue. that wasn't a problem with him, so I went to bed with wires hanging from my ceiling because it was about midnight by now and then swapped them out the next day. All went well for a week. Next warm day, the full blown alarm wakes me up at 2 AM....again, no fire just a warm room, so I got the ladder out and unwired the different alarm again. I ended up returning all 3 alarms. I have to say, customer service was good and returning them was easy. However, that was in part because of Nest deactivating the wave off feature that it had when I bought it and I did get a check about 8 weeks later. Bottom line, for the dramatic price difference, it didn't work very well. I had a smoke detector for 7 years in the same spot with no false alarms and I 2 separate Nest alarms give me problems. In theory, it would be worth it, but in practice it didn't even meet the most basic needs of a smoke detector to not go off unless there is an actual fire. Others may run their air conditioners more than I do and not have a problem, but I like my windows open, so this didn't work for me.

Neat product that complements the Nest thermostat
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The installation was very easy, no need to drill holes or cut wires. I installed two units and it took one of them a few hours to update its status from "power is out" to "all green" in the iPhone app, but it finally worked. So far everything looks fine and I really like the added convenience and the peace of mind.

Came back strong after recall
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nest protect is a great product that works well with the evolving Nest ecosystem. I do not have a Nest thermostat as of yet, but these were my first step in moving to that direction. I wanted a product that will have all my home automation in one easy to use app and I feel nest will be the way to go ( nest thermostats, nest protects and dropcams) The nest protect was easy to install for any skill set and only required your iPhone, a screw driver, your homes wifi key and a ladder). Once you program the wifi information into the first device, the system Can copy that information to the other devices. From that point forward, it's adding the new backplate and wiring white to white and black to black. The app is easy to read and the system will always remind you it's in good status whenever you turn off the house lights. If it's all clear, you will see the device illuminate green. I was interested in this product prior to the recall and I'm happy I waited. Not only do I believe it's now a safer product, but it's also 30.00 cheaper per unit! Amy only compliant, is since my alarms are flush against the wall. The nighttime path feature is useless. I was hoping the motion tracking would be better to compensate for this installation type, however, it doesn't want to work. If you mount these on an angle or directly to the ceiling, I don't see that being an issue at all.

Great addition for a connected home
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been replacing my smoke detectors as they fail with the Nest and have been amazed at the ease of setup, easy ability to check on the status when away and the fantastic communication by the alarm of where detection is coming from. Highly recommend.

Pricey, but Worth It
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you have a Nest thermostat, this is a no-brainer. The Protect will coordinate with your Nest and shut down the A/C in case of alarm. It pings your phone, letting you shut down false alarms before they occur as well - a huge boon if you're like me and burn dinner often.

Easy install
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased the wired version of the nest protect. It was very easy to install I have to do is follow the instructions and don't forget to do that last test once it's connected. I like that it will notify me of any problems through my iPhone which is why I bought it.

Needs one very important feature
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Until Next Protect allows this product to interconnect with existing smoke detectors that are wired together I would not recommend this product. This product "Expires" 7 years after it is manufactured, and will no longer protect your property when that date is reached. My house has 7 smoke detectors all wired together. If I replace one smoke detector with the Nest Protect it will not trigger the other existing alarms in the event smoke is detected. On the flip side, if I spend $700 plus tax to replace all alarms in the house, I will have to do so in 6-1/2 years because the product I picked up from the shelf of a Best Buy store has a date code that is already ticking whether it sits on their shelf for a year or 2 months. I have seen several rebuttals from NEST customer service saying that no other connected devices offer this feature, but that is incorrect. First-Alert Onlink has a product that does exactly this so you are able to replace just one of your smoke detectors and if any of your existing alarms go off you can still receive a notification to your phone app. AC10-500

I have had no issues with them, And test both once per month. Our kitchen one goes off a lot, But its never a false alarm.. Just a bad cook (lol) Everything I wanted and expected. And now at an even better price.

Safe your money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I don't usually write review but I just want to warn people about this product. I received my Nest device in a very nice box but that is about all it is. I decided to setup the device with my iPhone 5s but got to the point where you connect with the device and all I got was can't detect the device. So I thought it might be the iPhone 5s so I got my wife who has an iPhone 4s and it did the exact same thing. I reset the device and it was the same thing. I love playing with new techie stuff but this one is not good. I returned the device and got my refund.

Horrible product Life!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just bought this product and found out when I opened the box that the unit has a seven year life. That is OK but the real issue is that it was 19 months old aleady, so I have lost nearly 20% of its value / life. I thought that Nest might help me but they have horrible customer service and support. I will not be buying any more of their products!!!!!!
