    Overall, Not Too Bad!

Overall, only three stars for now, could get up to four, but will need to change some things. Here are my thoughts: First the things I like, the outside touch screen is nice and will avoid leaving prints which I thought might show someone your code easily, but the outside lock, chimes, sounds, etc., are nice and very Nest like. Installing this is almost like any other deadbolt, very easy. Ensure that the deadbolt is FULLY extracted before installing (you'll know what I mean when you get to that step). Otherwise you are going to be upset when the deadbolt and back lock don't fully meet. They are nice enough to add different length screws which is nice. Now about all the things I think Nest could improve on: First, the position of the two screws to bolt these to your inside door are in the worst place, right behind the batteries. If you have to reset the lock like I did setup (like I had to), this is a really odd place and will make resetting to factory defaults extremely difficult. It will require you to use your two hands in ways you never imagined. Also, the back cover is plastic and cheap, so is the white button right beneath it. I just paid retail price when it was released and I find it odd that they couldn't find a way to use something metal instead. A missed opportunity. Adding a default passcode is easy when finally setup, but I got in a setup loop when trying to add additional pass codes and had to call Nest support when setting up. They were great. Just setup your default account and then add others when the device is finally added to your account. Why only three stars? Really no other integration for this product. Can't integrate it with Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Supposedly voice integration is "soon" which means to me, never. I would look to be able to say "Ok Google, lock the door", but not happening for now. For $279, the Nest Connect should be included, not an additional $30 above the base retail cost of the kit or a Nest Thermostat should be able to be used as Nest Connect aka "Weave" compatible. Another pain point, how come the warranty is three years when a Nest Pro installs it when any homeowner can basically install this? I understand Nest wants to support their install network, but seems wrong to me. You, the homeowner with a little time can easily install this in 30 minutes tops. Besides this, I do actually do like it, but the plastic bits, the extra cost of the Nest Connect and no integration keep this at 3 stars. Great to get if you have existing Nest products. I have the thermostat, three Nest Protect and the Nest Hello on the way. Yes, I would recommend it.

    Sturdy lock

This is a very sturdy lock, the interior lock is rather large, the outdoor lock is the keypad. You can lock/unlock your door via the app from anywhere. A separate passcode can be assigned to each person so you know who is exactly entering your house. We have Nest smoke detectors so I was able to just add the lock to my account. Adding the lock was a bit tricky because I scanned the wrong barcode & it never showed up in the app, after scanning the right code app set up was easy. The lock talks to you. Installation took a few tries to line up the lock with the plate. My husband installed it and said it took about 2 tries & a little adjustment with the Dremel to line it up. Other than that installation was quite easy, the outdoor lock basically plugs into the indoor part & fits in your existing deadbolt hole. Sometimes this is the only lock we use now . One touch in the app locks & unlocks it.

I have been looking at smart locks for a while, but never pulled the trigger. The Nest/Yale lock is a welcoming addition to our home. The directions were very clear and install was a breeze. You need to be prepared to line up the deadbolt and striker plate exactly to ensure proper operation. That was the only time consuming step of the install. I have had it installed for about a week now and have had no errors, issues, or regrets. It looks super modern and sleek on the outside of the door. The inside hardware is a little bulky, but it still looks great. I love the app control and the ability to let others select their own codes for entry. The product was designed very well, has a good weight to it, and appears to be able to last for years to come.

    A Key is Faster

I like to have the latest and greatest gadgets available at all times. Years ago I had a biometric lock that opened my door by swiping my finger against it. After many years it stopped working and I got a Kwikset combination lock that at the time promised WiFi capabilities by inserting a WiFi card into the back of the lock. They never made one for that particular model so I opened the door using the combination. Now that I saw this Nest X Yale lock, it looked nice and it looked promising so I called Nest to inquire since I couldn't find any info online at the time. They said they didn't have any information on the lock prior to it hitting the store shelves. I waited until it was in the stores and called them again. They told me although it worked with the app, it didn't have voice control but I was told it did have "geofencing" so as I approached the lock with my phone, the lock would open. That sounded good so I got it. I removed the old lock and replaced it with this one. The installation was pretty simple, the only issue was I needed to make the hole in the door ever so slightly larger so out came the Dremel and the lock installed in minutes. It connected to the app by scanning the QR code on the back of the lock and the QR code on the Nest Connect module that is included and plugs into an outlet. The app worked great, opening and closing the lock by holding my finger on the unlock icon for two seconds until the circle around the icon completed. I went into the settings and moved the map around until the arrow pointed to the front of my house so it looked like I set the geofence. Now for the test. I walked out of the house and nothing happened. OK, not a big deal, I pressed the Yale icon on the front of the lock and it closed. I went away and when I came back, I expected the lock to open as I approached but no such luck. I pressed my combination on the front of the lock and it opened. I went online again and still no info so I called Nest again. This time I was told it didn't have geofencing and I had to use the app or the front panel of the lock to open it. So when I'm getting home with packages in my arms, I have to take out my phone, unlock the phone, locate the app and press it, wait a few seconds for it to load, click the Front Door icon then press and hold the large circle for 3 seconds until the circle completes and the door opens. What's the benefit? I can pull out a key and open a lock way faster. In this case, there is no key! I have to punch in my combination on the door. What's the difference between this lock and my previous lock? Nest says that they are working on implementing voice control but it won't be available for a while. I looked for other ways to automate it like IFTTT.com but there is no applet available for it there either. It needs to be able to be controlled by Siri so I can open it from the outside. Making it work with Alexa, Google Assistant or Cortana would only help if I were in the house and I can always just walk to the door and open it on the way out. If they can get Siri to work with it, I would give it 5 stars but the way it stands now, I really can't recommend it as a key lock would be faster.

I have owned a few other smart locks but Yale's engine is by far the weakest. For this price, you would think that Google would come up with a way to auto lock only during the night. The lack of third party integration and even the lack of integration with Google's own products makes this lock the most "featureless" products on the market.

Install was a piece of cake, 10 minutes tops. Afterwards I had problems when the lock was testing for obstructions. I was able to lock it manually with ease, I kept getting a "Deadbolt Jammed" message which began to frustrate me. After a short time I decided to chizzle the deadbolt hole deeper to see if it would help and then BAM, no more problems. The device works smoothly and is pleasant to look at both inside and out. This is our 7th nest product, their products never disappoint!

Hi RaminZ, thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. We're sorry to hear that you already had multiple technicians already tried to connect your Nest x Yale Lock on the Google Home app. We can only imagine how frustrating this may have been for you. We're certainly hoping you will give us another shot at helping you with your concern. And if you're willing to try, we recommend checking if your Nest Connect or Nest Guard is properly set up. Your Nest × Yale Lock doesn’t really connect directly to your Wi-Fi network. Instead it uses Weave to connect to a Nest Connect or Nest Guard device in your home. Your Connect or Guard, which are connected to your Wi-Fi network, will act as border routers and will let your lock communicate with the Nest service in the cloud and the Nest app on your phone.

We understand that you may still have some questions about how your Nest x Yale Lock, and how it works with your Nest Connect or Nest Guard. Please consider contacting our support team for further assistance here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Coming from a crowdsourced alternative (GATE), the Nest/Yale lock is a breath of fresh air. It integrates with NEST ecosystem smart home tech seamlessly. We have 2 NEST outdoor cams, so the loss of an in lock camera is negligible to us. Batteries are still going strong after 6 weeks. Remote lock/unlock works without a hitch, as do notifications. All in all, I would highly recommend the Nest/Yale lock if you want to integrate into an already NEST heavy ecosystem.

This lock is attractive & truly a smart device. Once installed, it can be automatically locked after 10 seconds or 1 minute & a notification sent to your phone. Being able to give different codes has also been helpful (& app tells me who uses their codes & when). Easy to install (watch the video!!). The Strikeplate wouldn’t fit & I’m doing without it for the time being & it still works well. Love this! Best decision ever.

I was really impressed by the construction of the Nest x Yale lock. It is heavy and substantial so it doesn't feel cheap or of low quality. It is exactly what you'd want a door lock to feel like to make you feel secure. I am not a handy man, but I was able to follow the instructions as well as the Nest videos on YouTube for some added guidance. It took me a little longer than your average person, probably 20-25 min to get it fully installed and setup, but most of that was me fumbling around with the old lock and getting the new one installed. First lock I've ever changed so if I can do it, anyone should be able to do it. Love all the features that come with it. Temporary pass codes, assigned pass codes for different people, and the ability to remote lock/unlock from the companion app which surprisingly was well thought out unlike so many other companion apps these days. Overall, I'd highly recommend this if you want to provide controlled access to a room or to your home. The batteries are supposed to last a year, but the app will alert you when they need replacing. I can see this coming in very handy for so many different scenarios.. Expensive delivery you can't be around for? Provide the temporary code to the delivery person so it can be left inside free from porch pirates. Maintenance need inside? Unlock remotely once they've called you. Friends from out of town arriving early and you can't be there to welcome them? Unlock remotely or give them a temporary code to use while they are visiting. Gone are the days of having random spare keys floating around. Pros: -Style -Functionality -Companion App Cons: -Battery lfe

Great Addition to Smart Home and Easy Install

I currently have the Nest Thermostat and Nest Smoke/CO2 detectors. Adding the Nest x Yale smartlock to my home automation was a great decision. The install of the lock itself took less than 15 minutes (I replaced a deadbolt that was already installed). The setup to link it to the network took about the same time. If you purchase from Best Buy, the device comes with a Nest Connect device that links the lock to the internet and then your Nest network. You do not need anything else. Once you have it installed, you can unlock your door remotely via your phone and setup unique codes for family members or even temporary codes if you are away and someone is watching your house. Very happy with this device and would definitely recommend it.

The set up of this lock was very easy and user-friendly. I must say that I truly like everything about it from its features, usefulness and performance. I chose to set up my pass code to use the lock system manually after my dear friend, assisted me with everything. The only problem I encountered was the app, for some odd reason, my WiFi wouldn’t recognize the app. Initially, I thought with this feature being unable to work, I wouldn’t be able to use the lock. I am glad, I read a few of my fellow-insiders reviews, which helped me to better understand the process. I think Nest has done a wonderful job in making the install process user-friendly and not a big hassle. I am super hyped about being able to enter my home without using a key….YIPEE!!! If you’re in need of a good secure lock system that is sleek looking in features and robust in usage, then please STOP, LOOK and TRY Nest x Yale, I promise, you won’t be disappointed!

No mechanical key backup is a deal breaker.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

To be honest, I love almost everything about this code and remote entry smart lock. The Nest web/phone app integration and software and manual code entry all work flawlessly. That being said... this lock does not have a mechanical key backup option. If the batteries do ever die, you can "jump start" it from the outside with a 9-volt battery... but let's hope that never happens at 2am. What I'm worried about is someday there's going to be some big solar flare or emp burst that's going to fry a lot of consumer electronics.. and this thing won't work at all and there will be NO WAY to physically unlock the door or get into your house. Scary! I mean eventually the microchip in this thing will burn out and then what? No possible way to manually, physically unlock the door? No thanks for that nightmare, especially in a condo/apt where there might only be on entrance/exit. When the zombie apocalypse comes... you'll be glad for having (the option to have) a spare key under the mat. ...

I like to have the latest and greatest gadgets on the market if I can help it. I love the idea of locking and unlocking the door from my phone, or not having so many keys on my keyring. I figured it would be a hassle but not impossible to install, but it was fairly simple. However, there were some issues with having to force fit it into the door. There is a set-up through an app with steps that are fairly easy to follow. I plan on investing in more Nest Products to better utilize its network.

The lock is well made and connection setup was simple. Be sure you measure first because the lock was larger than my original and had to cut out the hole bigger. The actual lock mechanism is twice as long as most locks so your recess may need drilled out. I like there is a fail-safe option to use a 9 volt battery if the batteries go dead so the lock can be operated. Once mounted it feels solid. The phone app is very useful, easy to use and customizable.
