Probably worse range than my old Netgear C3700

Underwhelmed with this $401 (with tax) modem. I got it specifically for the range; the speed was not as important to me. We have a room above our garage so the extended range is important. I STILL get better signal from all our neighbors wifi. This modem is going back and I don't recommend it just because I expected a lot more performance. It is also HUGE; about 3 times bigger than my Netgear C3700. I am going back to using my old C3700 which was actually starting to fail after 5 years but its still better than AC3200. I have restarted this modem multiple times, set the antennas to different angles, all of which still gives me no more range than I had before I bought this.

A great modem that fails every 16 months

Let me say, when it works this modem is fabulous. It's fast and easy to use. But I've had two in the last three years, and each one dies shortly after the warranty expires. My first one died stone cold, no reason. Wouldn't even power on one day. No other electronics in my home showed any signs of even power outage. My second one, which I bought thinking the first failure was a fluke, is now in the process of dying. It randomly ejects wireless connected devices at it's own discretion. Sometimes it refuses to recognize it's own ethernet ports. At times the internet goes down and stays down until it is factory reset. Trying to get into the settings says "no cable modem found." And that's while you're online using the very modem that cannot find itself. I had very high expectations for a modem of this price point, and it performed as I expected which is why it gets two stars and not one. However, it is not feasible to expect customers to have to buy another one every 16 months. This time I am dropping to lower level unit and really hoping to get more than 16 months of life from it. At this time frame, it'd be cheaper to let comcast run me through for their $14 a month unit.

LOOK IT UP BEFORE YOU BUY. THERE ARE PROBLEMS.

THIS ROUTER IS KNOWN FOR DROPPING INTERNET. LOOK IT UP BEFORE BUYING. I bought this for our new house. I didnt want to mess with routers/modems for a while so I bought top of the line. After a couple months it started dropping internet. I called tech support and they informed me that it was running correctly and the issue had to be coming from the line to the house. It was a new house and tech people tend to be smarter than me so it sounded possible. Though countless calls to Cox and three visits that cost around 100$ each. I have had all lines to the house replaced. At this point I started looking at the router. It turns out that this is a common issue. It has somthing to do with the soft ware. Their 1 year warrenty only covers hardware and after 3 months they drop tech support. If you have an issue they want you to pay to extend thier 3 month tech warrenty. So withthis device, you have about 3 month life span untill you are resetting your router 2-3 times per day. I love net gear. Every modem/router i have purchased was form them. They do not support their products any more.

    BEWARE!

I don’t typically spend the effort to write reviews but feel it was important to in this case. My apologies in advance for the length of this review. The device has lots of positive reviews but that was not my experience. I’ve had other Netgear devices that have performed well, but not the C7800. On June 9th I purchased the modem/router after a lightning strike took out lots of my home electronics. I struggled for several weeks trying to get my smart home working reliably again. The root cause of my problem was the C7800 dropping 2.4GHz WiFi connections periodically. Then its SSID would disappear so you couldn’t even log the device back it. Another reboot and it was live again. By this time, it was too late to return it to the store. After numerous tech support calls, chats and troubleshooting sessions I convinced them to send me a replacement. (It shouldn’t have been that hard! It was clearly defective.) The replacement was a refurbished device that had even worse problems. I have hobbies that include designing devices that are WiFi enabled. With the refurb I was able to log into the C7800 without the router acknowledging my device in the attached devices screen in the router. A big security scare for me. Plus, the router kept dropping devices. After many more discussions and troubleshooting sessions, they agreed to send me another C7800. I actually wanted them to send me a different lower cost router but they refused. However they did agreed to send me a NEW C7800 this time. Unfortunately, they sent another refub that I didn’t even try. I returned that one and they eventually sent me another new C7800, again refusing to send a cheaper router to make me happy. I would like to say this one worked better but this device couldn’t give me a display of what devices where connected to the router 2 times in a row and get the same list. At this time, I DEMANDED a different device. This was day 113 of my battle with the C7800 and Netgear. After that demand they ghosted me, so I finally went out and bought a Arris modem and Linksys router. I had it working reliably in 2 hours (of which 1 hour was driving to and back from Best Buy). Finally at day 142 I heard back from Netgear as the case was still open. I told them the C7800 is in the trash where it belongs and close the case, I don’t want to waste any more time with you. So just a warning. The device might work well for some simple applications but anything beyond that I would not recommend the device. I’m also concerned about its security. I offered to work with Netgear engineers to address the security concerns but the tech support person did not take me up on the offer. So I’m not so happy with Netgear as well. Just for reference I feel competent in my analysis having 2 degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a 35 year technical career.

Got new Gigabit internet speed and I wanted a new modem and router combo that can handle those speeds. First day and I have troubles activating the router, have to call in a technician and they can’t figure it out. I try calling netgear customer support and it just doesn’t work. Don’t know what to do anymore just going to return it. Don’t buy it.

Do Not Recommend, Poor Quality and No Support

1st one worked fine for 4-6 months, then wifi signal would randomly drop. 2nd worked fine for 4 months, and doing the same thing. Netgear is anti-consumer company. There's only a 90 days warranty where you can get tech support. After 90 days. you have to pay Netgear for phone support. They tried to get me to pay them first, to be considered for a replacement under the warranty.

    Terrible Router

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Modem side works fine with Cox Gigablast here, but router will regularly drop off devices and I am unable to change the settings that will solve this. The device has basically made the crucial settings read-only, writing will never work. And you can never update firmware because ISP has to manage that. Basically stuck using it as a modem only and buying a separate router, don't waste your money on this combo.

Comcast is saying it’s my equipment and Netgear says it’s comcast. I spent hours with both on the phone and got nowhere, terrible suppose and could barely understand the people on the phone. This is a lot of money to spend to get poor quality and terrible service.

Do not purchase this combo! I’ve warranty swapped them twice and all are trash . Absolutely no range , connection is choppy even on streaming sites . Maybe if they focused on the basics and not all the fancy stuff maybe this product would be worth $400 .
