Nighthawk AC1900 R7000 Router
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have Comcast Xfinity Blast Internet Service (75mbps). Comcast is increasing my tier in the upcoming weeks to 100mbps. They have forced me to upgrade my modem (I own my own) from an Arris SB6141 to one that will be compatible with the increased speed. The SB6141 will no longer be supported. Recently, I purchased the Arris SB6190, which was one of the six or so modems compatible with my service. I installed it and it works great. I had it coupled to an older Netgear N300 router, which worked fine, but was struggling to get range in my home (about 3,400 square feet). So, I decided to upgrade the router to achieve this. I ran various speed tests using an iPhone 7 and newer 11.6 inch Asus laptop (don't have the model number handy, but it is about a year old). I ran the tests throughout various locations in my home using the SB6190 and N300 to establish a baseline. Just as a side note, even though I haven't been bumped up in speed yet, I have always been getting a solid 85-90mbps while hardwired into the N300 router. I ran my range of tests. As expected, when I was in the same room (office) as the router, my wireless speed hovered around 55-68mbps depending on the device used. My iPhone7 had the better speed. As I got further from the router the signal and speed decreased (also expected). In my garage and in the second floor master bedroom (furthest locations from the router) my speed dropped down to around the 10-15mbps range. Definitely a router range issue. On 12/8/17 I went ahead and installed the Netgear AC1900 Nighthawk R7000 router with the default settings. There was one firmware update after installation of the router and I updated the firmware as recommended. I followed the installation instructions provided verbatim. I then reran all of the same tests from the same locations using the same devices. I was excited to see that my router's range extended through my entire home. In the two areas that were struggling (garage and master bedroom) I was nor getting an average of 31-36mbps in the garage and 41-47mbps in the master bedroom. I thought, "Wow"! Then, the disappointment... I went back into the office and other areas of the home where my signal was at 100% according to the bars on my devices and the Netgear Genie App, but my speed in those areas, which were close to the hardwired speeds, had dropped significantly down from the 55-68mbps to 41-45mbps. It was evident that although my range increased I was getting about the same speed throughout my home regardless of how close I was to the router. It didn't make sense. I didn't know if it had something to do with the Beamforming technology or firmware update. I reset the router back to factory defaults and went to the previous firmware, but did not get any improvement. I contacted Netgear and for the free service they were able to provide me, we adjusted some settings and played with channels, etc... No improvement and the technician was lost for words. His solution was to purchase a one-time service (around $49.00) so that he could go into the router remotely to see what was going on. I just spent $150.00 on this router while it was on sale and I was going to spend any more, so I declined. I reinstalled the Netgear N300 and got my close range speeds back to where they were and sacrificed the longer range. Fast forward to today, 12/114/17. I have always been a fan of Netgear and never had issues with my previous two routers, albeit technology and range as Wi-Fi continues to develop. I went out and purchased the Netgear AC1750 R6400 router using the default settings. Much to my surprise, the R6400 is performing much better than the R7000 did. I am baffled. My speeds have improved in all locations as compared to the R7000 and when I am in the same room as the router my speeds are near the wired LAN speeds. I can't figure it out? Anyway, I was unhappy with the R7000 and I am glad I gave Netgear another chance. So, if anyone else is struggling with this same issue, try the R6400 or another Netgear router. Hope this helps someone else who may be ready to throw their R7000 router out the window.

Was good at first, then went downhill.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nighthawk Ac1900 was very quick with data transfers. Then we tried the guest mode and fell into a circle of network dropouts at frequent intermittent times. Wifi would cut out constantly. Going to return for an ASUS router.
