    Good Router When It Works

I purchased this router about a year ago to give broader coverage throughout my home. It did increase the coverage but not significantly. However, after about 6 months, the 2.4Ghz channel no longer provides internet access. Devices can connect but internet is not available. This has not been an issue with the 5Ghz channel. So all my devices then have to share the 5Ghz channel or I have to reboot the router. It will typically work for a couple hours then the problem appears again. This is disappointing considering the NETGEAR brand in this space and the very high cost of this router. I've decided to retire it and have purchased Google WiFi instead to replace it.

    Not Good For Me

I had a Netgear router for the past 5+ years without fault. It died in November, 2015, and purchased the Nighthawk based on the reviews on line. The router was easy to install and then the problems began. I have an HP Laserjet 1025nw color printer that has been flawless for a number of years. Unfortunately, it is unable to maintain consistent connection via wireless with this router. It will loose connection within minutes at times and yet maintain connection for days at other times. I can see the ip address on the Netgear Genie online when connection is good and it will disappear without notice at any time. I have updated the firmware on the printer and never, ever had this issue with the other Netgear router. I purchased the 2 year replacement warranty from Best Buy and will attempt to return it for exchange. Time will tell.

The Router is Great, The Company????????

My overall rating for the router is 5 stars!!!!! I think it is a good product. My problem is with the company; they are continuously interfering with the router service, taking it off my internet connection, forcing me to troubleshoot the problem only to end up with their webpage insisting on one thing or another, but always ends in an attempt to sell me their support services. To them I say, KNOCK IT OFF!

This router setup in 15 minutes. It would have been less but for my internet provider. The first thing I have noticed is no clocking. There really is a difference in a <$50 router compared to >$150. I highly recommend it!

Well for starters, it lasted about 3 years now. Biggest reason for the 3 stars is, it's slow and disconnects often. I use internet all day, with 5 kids and distance learning to boot, it's frustrating to keep resetting the dumb thing. Had gig internet, out of the modern I had very good, very fast internet 500+ mbps. Out of the router, even on a wired connection it was 20 mbps. It served it's purpose, but I wouldn't waste my money on another.

    Handles AirPlay and iPad poorly

    1. I have 2 Apple Airport Expresses that drive speakers. One of them wouldn't work at all with the Netgear R7000 router. We had had some problems with it in the past, so I just thought maybe it's time was up. The other one worked ok for a few days, but then started having dropouts. Occasional at first, then every few minutes. Sometimes it would drop out for a minute or even 10 minutes, then start playing again. With the other problems (see below# I decided to swap out the new one and go back to my old Linksys router. Bingo! Both expresses work just fine straming music via AirPlay with NO dropouts. 2. One cool feature of the Netgear is that it has backup software to back up to the attached external USB 3.0 drive. Got it set up on my 3 computers and it seemed great. I could access the backed up files from my iPad or phone #with the computers off# -- great for pictures! Then I went to show a picture to my wife and hmm, it wasn't there. I got to checking and my guess is that about 10% of files #random in many directories# were not backed up! What?? Nothing special about them -- .jpg, same date range as others in the directory.... 3. Our iPads have been sluggish since we got the new router and this weekend it was worse and was really driving my wife crazy. After the swap back to the old router, bingo again, everything is snappy, wife happy. 4. Probably the #1 reason I got the Netgear over the Apple in the first place was because the Netgear has an AirPlay server built in. No need to have a computer running. While it did actually work #max 10,000 songs) with the iPad Remote app, it was clunky, and again with the Airport Express problems, was unusable for playing music. 5. Minor, but adding to the overall dissatisfaction, was on the Network map, it showed wired clients as wireless and vice versa, AND different each time. What?? 6. With various problems popping up I rebooted the router a lot. My expectation is just to have it there and forget about it. Returned it and got an Apple Airport Extreme. Have to return it tomorrow. I'll do a review on it on the Extreme page.

I have owned this router for a few weeks now. It was easy to set up and runs well. There are advanced features that I will eventually like to learn to use, but that will have to wait a bit. My wireless performance has greatly improved with this product.

    Quit working after 90 days

Purchased from bestbuy the router worked great for a few months then no internet connectivity. Called netgear tech support they wouldn't talk to me because the support only is covered for 90 days. They offered to sell me support for more money. So this router is only covered under warranty for 90 days not 1 year like you would expect from any product. I will never buy another netgear product again cant even call it the worst support ever since I received no support at all.

    Apalling firmware problems

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Product worked fine until I upgraded the firmware to pick up security fixes, and I have had unrelenting problems since. If you are considering this router, then do yourself a favor and check out the Netgear forum. The only way I can explain the firmware problems you will read about is poor QA. It feels like Netgear uses early adopters to identify significant problems such as wifi dropouts and router reboots. I just updated the firmware to current version (1.0.9.60) to resolve a problem where the router was rebooting every 10 minutes. The upgrade seems to have resolved this, but this never occurred with 1.0.9.42, and I have no explanation as to why rebooting the router with .42 failed to resolve the problem. Bottom line is that I have no faith in Netgear's ability to support this product.

    Mediocre

Was a really great router until we had kids and got more devices over a few years. This router can not handle more than two or three active devices without issues (resetting, dropping connections, simply not working as it should, etc.). Three streams going, dropped connections and resets. I would only recommend this router for households with one or two people, unless each device is connected via CAT 6. Not so much an issue, but as someone with highly sensitive hearing, this router makes some awful high pitched noises.

This router was REALLY good for about 2 years. I recently updated my internet to 400mb. The router will put it out over WiFi, but not direct plugin. I updated the firmware to now have it drop internet twice a day. Netgear charges to do support. Do not buy this without doing research on all the issues it has.

    Disconnecting issues

I have had the router for about a year now and I have had nothing but issues with this router. I am constantily getting dropped from the internet and once it drops it continues to do so. The modem is working fine, so I know I have internet. The router tends to drop connect every hour to 3. Very frustrating and would not recommend.

Great router while it worked HOWEVER, I was promoted on the netgear app to update its firmware which I did. The router turned off but when it restarted the router power light was orange and the router was non responsive. I tried unplugging, letting it sit, check the internet service provider and it was working properly tried connecting hard wired to my laptop to get to the router menu and nothing worked. So I called their customer support. After being told to hold the reset button for one minute the operator told me that was the extent of his help he could provide since I purchased it at the end of 2018 and it was out of the service range. He offered me a 34 dollar deal that would support me with my network tv and all my home electronics. Of course I declined haha just fix my router, netgear prompted me to update, I updated and its not working now you want money to fix it ttyl lol Just beware

Purchased Router and New Computer in January. Cable company also updated internet speed in January, Problems started, knocked out TiVo, dropped wifi, disconnected internet sporadically. Contacted cable company, they came and replaced MOCA, Modems and the DVR at different times. Still the same. Contacted Best Buy Geek, came and changed settings and channels on MOCA. I went to advanced Genie and changed some settings in the router. Still nothing. In frustration, bought a Linskys and everything worked fine. In process of contacting NetGear to resolve. Flashes are nice very spacy.. looks like it should fly, but not worth $200.00

    Hardware Quality

Router finally died after 8 months preceded by intermittent failures for about 2 months. Had steady power amber light. After 90 days you have to pay for NetGear phone support to confirm you have a bad product unless you purchased a protection plan. Bought a competitor whole home wifi system to replace it instead. First router I purchased for personal use in 15 years to have a hardware failure. All personal routers before were retired because they were outdated. Doesn't speak well for the product quality, especially for the price.
