DO NOT BUY THE KNIGHTHAWK LINE. 100% regret buying

The Specs/Price look great, but within a few months the router would start dropping connections. It started out Random, every couple weeks, but now it's a couple times an hour. NetGear makes you pay for technical support after 90 days, even to get an RMA. Look it up..... It's a well documented issue. "R7000 drops connection" "Knighthawk Drops connection" Mine was stone dead within 6 months. I tried both Factory and OSS firmawares ad the problem persisted. That's means faulty hardware. Even when it was new, the Gigabit WAN could only pass 315 to 325 Mbps (Qos, SPI, VPN, NAT, DHCP, etc.. disabled). After I replaced it with a purpose built firewall I was getting 480 from my ISP. It does not perform to what they advertise. I swicthed it to Access Point only since my wifi devices can't use all that bandwidth anyway. Now, it doesn't work at all and neither does anything in my smart home as a result. $150 paperweight.

    Do not buy this router

Whatever you do, do not buy this router. You will be very disappointed and aggravated. I bought this router a few months back and all the reviews were great when I purchased it. Setup was easy and my WiFi speeds were amazing at first; however, that slowly declined after a few months. Being that the router was still under warranty, I contacted Netgear. Their customer support was great, but they were unable to fix the issue. They ended up sending me a new router which I was very please about. Unfortunately when I installed the new router I had the exact same issue and was immediately on the phone with tech support again. This time I gave the tech full access to my PC and router where he went through different settings, firmware, and channel configuration to no avail. He then transferred the case over to engineering where I spent the next week and half troubleshooting with them. While the whole time not having speeds faster than dial up. During this time I spent more time researching the slow WiFi connection with the R7000, and I was astonished to see on Netgears community page of how many people had the exact same issue that never got resolved. Now I'm still waiting on the engineers debating on whether I should just go buy another brand or hope they somehow make it right. Again stay away from this router

    Bad firmware

Warning!! Do not update firmware on this router!!! The last few firmware versions for this router are unusable. They cause consistent WiFi disconnects on all connected devices. Makes downloading, streaming, video calls impossible. Had to download and reinstall the old firmware version. I purchased this router years ago and it works very well as long as I do not upgrade the firmware, which Netgear keeps telling me I should for security reasons. There has been several firmware versions come out since I purchased the router but they are all unusable and Netgear knows it. They have not released a new version for a while so I’m sure they have given up on trying to fix the issue. Probably a hardware security issue that they cannot fix through firmware without messing up WiFi connectivity. Stay away from this router!

    Awful

Awful. Not plug and play. When I got it working after 6 hours on day 1 it worked GREAT. Great coverage for the entire house, clear pictures on streaming devices. Excellent. But it dropped internet within a week. Had to reboot daily. Read all the forums about reverting to an earlier firmware, didn't work. Reset to factory settings. Rebooted, easy estimate, over 100 times. Waited on the phone for the support person. Transferred 3 times and about an hour an a half for him to tell me I'd done all the things I could do and to return it for a new one. By that time I had renamed, changed every cable I could think of, found a way to re-update the firmware to the latest, rebooted everything again for the 101st time and miraculously have internet and wifi again. Its too much. If it drops again and I cannot get it back easily it goes in the dumpster with my $159 and I'll try another brand. Would NEVER recommend this router. Do your research. There are lots of posts about this router dropping.

Add boost to my home network. Great to have control over network even when not connected to it. And set up my own personal cloud storage with Readycloud. Very good router.

Dont buy if you need bridging

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Ok let me start out by saying that if I just wanted a wireless router specifically for nothing else but connecting a couple of devices (lan) and standard WAN based activities it would be very good. The range is great etc. No issues so far there. My problem is I needed bridging. My current Linksys worked great for that, but has a firmware problem (that... actually I believe they resolved just recently), where I would lose the routers connectivity to the network in bridge mode. In Non- bridge mode it just didn't support 5G so it conflicted with my Wireless speakers etc. So this router, was seemingly the perfect choice based on my multistory house etc. However, this router ONLY supports bridging based on Wireless to Wireless connectivity. I don't have wireless turned on my primary router (on purpose# and I since the whole point was issues with range of the wireless signal, this, for me, is a terrible model. My Linksys was straight up true lan based bridging, where this one is not. Since I don't have WiFi on my primary router, then this is a waste for me :-#. It's a shame, I really liked it overall but doesn't help that I can't use it for what I wanted to actually use it for. Take heed of that if you want true bridging (not WiFi bridging# The only reason I am saying not to recommend to a friend, is all MY friends need bridging #not everyone does but they do), so no I wouldn't recommend for them.

I have been a big supporter of Netgear products and have used them for many years and have always had good success with their products. Unfortunately my luck has come to an end with this router. While it has provided superior coverage from my previous Netgear product, I have to power cycle it every few weeks because it stops passing wireless traffic. Wired connections continue to work, but wireless, file sharing, and management features stop responding. I have tried various versions of software and still have problems. The Netgear forums are full of people with similar issues. I can extend the lock-up period by disabling features (such as QoS), but then you are not getting what you paid for. I guess I will be trying a different manufacturer for my next purchase. Too many people are having problems when you cruise the Netgear forums.

Router is basic, after 3-4 years of use the performance decreased thanks for all the netgear updates, they decrease your router speed and performance. If you have issues just update the router with an old Firmware and it should work as new. Netgear im very dissapointed

    Poor service and product

1 year and no longer producing marketed speeds. Netgear product support basically tries to convince you that 0-80 Mbps is normal speeds for 2GHz even if you are right in front of the router (provider delivering 400 Mbps). This is an interesting claim since the router used to give me higher than 150 Mbps. They also said for the 5Ghz only 150 to 200 Mbps should be expected. LIES or false marketing. Not false marketing since this product used to work, definitely lies to not honor the hardware warranty. Tricked me into buying premium support claiming they would honor the hardware warranty if they cannot achieve 200 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz. Once it came down to it they did not honor it.

    Loses Connection/DNS issues

Got this product to replace a failing Netgear R6300 AC router. Setup was straight forward. Issues arose when the 5GHz band would drop throughout the day but the router still showed an Internet connection via wired connection. When it worked, pages would load quick on both wired and wireless. Images wouldn't load correctly and a DNS error is displayed on both wired and wireless connection. I've checked with my ISP and there were no issues or known ongoing maintenance in the area. I switched to Google's public DNS servers and still had the same issues. Yes I checked all wiring and for the latest firmware updates but still had connection issues, especially no IPv6 connections. I purchased the Lynksys WRT1900ACS and set that up with no issues. Everything worked and even got the IPv6 connectivity as well. I used all default settings on both routers but the Linksys router has come out on top. I even switch to my ISP's DNS settings with no issues for the last 48 hours. Solid Linksys router, just needs Time Machine support. I returned the Nighthawk after ensuring everything has been working.

I bought this unit at the end of March... pretty expensive router. Worked well until last week. Router won't hook up with the modem anymore. Tried to go through Netgear for support. No problem, if the unit has problems from the first 4 months of purchase. The Netgear Genie does a little bit of nothing except run you through an endless cycle of tests. I hate to be that guy, but I definitely won't buy anything else from Netgear.
