    Ok when it works

Bottom line this thing works when it wants to. It doesnt hold a strong connection speed and when It stops working you, unless you got the router within 90 days (a joke of a timeline for something that's supposed to last years) have to pay Netgear for a yearly tech support contract to see if they even know what's wrong with it. I would honestly N E V E R buy a Netgear product again jsut off of that. Again when its connected it works ok, not good or great but its ok, but spend the extra money and get a device that actually works and is supported by a company that actually believes in their devices lasting longer than 90 days.

    Terrible Support

AVOID Netgear at all costs! I bought this less than a year ago, and now that it is dropping my connection almost all the time (common issue with this router apparently) I am being told by Netgear that I'm SOL. Talking to someone on the phone, they asked what color the power light was. That light was solid white... "It's working fine, it's not a hardware issue and isn't covered by warranty." So, a software issue (that Netgear pushed to the device) renders it unusable, and not covered by warranty? This is the WORST customer "support" I've ever experienced.

    Never worked correctly

I bought this router at Best Buy. For the first two months, I was unable to get the Genie software to work, so working with tech support was futile. After that, the tech support period ended. File transfer speeds over Ethernet are all over the map. Router will stop working without warning. This is my last Netgear purchase.

    Great Idea and easy setup

Overall everything that i love about netgear products are easy to setup, features, and a quality product. This one falls a little short. The latest firmware update will fix 5g issues, but you must do a factory default reset after firmware update is complete. Next adjust your settings back to your liking. Will work but has not fixed range in 5g, you can give yourself a little more running room by adjusting channel, but nowhere close to range of 2.5g. Could have done a little more r & d before product release. Which so far from what I'm reading, they have done with the Nighthawk x6, just still to expensive for my blood. I'll wait until it's about $150 before I bite though, $299, it aint a computer or phone now, add a touch screen with os and i'll pay the $299, but until then i can be patient this time, i think the nighthawk was realeased a little too early and got to many good reviews before problems took hold.

Spent 5 hours trying to get this router to work properly (i have an IT background). Slow speeds and it wouldnt let some of my devices connect (yes they are compatible). Next day spent over 40 min on hold for customer support to talk to someone in India before i hung up and returned it because they could not fix it.

Do not buy this Router if you plan on streaming

Do not buy this Router if you plan on streaming or using it for any type of uploading. They have a hardware problem that make them disconnect after 2 hours and 4 mins on the dot. There is no fix and it will happen every time. I reached out to customer support and got no help. I wish someone would have warned me about this before I bought it. Just search the issue on google if you want to see what I am talking about. I hope this helps and shows why it has dropped in price so much.

    It's a decent router

The first R7000 that I got had random wifi disconnects. I went ahead and exchanged it. The second one that I got randomly has Youtube videos that buffer slowly. I kept this router, because the only manufacturer that makes routers with Open NAT for multiple gaming consoles is Netgear.

    Don't buy it

I bought this item to replace an old Linksys router that failed after years of service. At $200.00, I expected that Netgear had a product that would at least perform the basics well. I was disappointed the day after when I was unable to connect to the internet from 3 different wireless devices. I wasn't happy but thought this was a fluke, until it did the same thing the next 3 nights. I upgraded the firmware, that said it fixed a memory leak that could be interrupting wireless service. The words were nice to read, but the reality is it failed again. I called Netgear Technical Support. I'm hoping the person I got is one of the few that are truly that incompetent. After describing the issue (wireless stops working after a day# 5 times, she assumed I needed to upgrade the firmware. After asking what version she was having me upgrade to 3 times, we finally determined that I had the most recent version installed. The wireless router dropping its wireless service after a short amount of time is a known issue at netgear, and yet they have chosen to not resolve the issue. Unless you A. Are willing to reboot the router on a daily basis, or B. Plan to use it only for a wired experience, I would strongly suggest you buy a product from a different company #I replaced it with a Linksys WRT1900AC that was $50.00 more), but the money will be well spent if I don't need to reboot the router on a daily basis.

I used this router with a DSL modem and the setup was awful, I couldn't get the internet on the computer. My computer is not compatible with this. I will never ever buy a DSL modem router ever again. I am going to be with cable or fiber from now on.

    Great wired performance...absolutely abysmal WiFi

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought this product to replace my old $60 Netgear WNDR3400v2 because I wanted increased range and speeds. I assumed replacing it with this Nighthawk router that is triple the price would get me what I wanted, but was unpleasantly surprised when it didn't. Similar easy setup and easy to navigate UI of all the other Netgear routers. PROS: - Significantly increased my wired internet connection speed (almost 3x) CONS: - Admin UI load time seemed slower than my old router - Reduced range for both 2.4 and 5ghz bands when compared to the old Netgear router - Poor download speeds over WiFi. Either the same or worse than my old router - Constant disconnect issues on the WiFi The WiFi performance of this router is absolutely unacceptable. I can't even keep my new Yogo 920 laptop connected to it because it keeps dropping connection. I had to re-install my old router to even be able to get the laptop to have a reliable connection. Now as I search the internet about the WiFi connection issues of this router, I see it is a common issue that plagues users of this router. Would not recommend. Very disappointed. Am hoping Netgear or Best Buy will improve the situation by offering some sort of replacement or refund.

    Continued to Crash

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Nighthawk was a Nightmare! My other NetGear Router lasted 5 years and when it came time for a refresh I immediately purchased another NetGear. This was a Nightmare.. I doubt that it was actually up and running with a wireless signal for more than 5 minutes at a time before it crashed. I was constantly rebooting the router. I ran troubleshooting measures, and then gave up, and sent it back to NetGear as it was still under warranty. I didn't know if it was my router or the Internet so I purchased a Linksys router instead just to have a wireless connection. Fortunately, it worked without any problems. Of course I threw the NETGEAR box out so now I am working with NetGear directly on an RMA. This purchase was a NIGHTMARE and a complete waste of time. The only think I can think of was that it was a defective unit. That being said, I have read how many people have had terrible firmware issues with the router. Needless to say, since I moved over to the Linksys I have not had problems. I willl avoid NetGear in the future and stick with Linksys from now on.

Wireless did not work after 3 months of usage. Was on the phone for hours having trouble understanding due to strong accents. I have to return the router to get it repaired. Poor quality of product and service. I probably would not buy NETGEAR brand any more.

    Reboot required every 2 days

Going back to linksys. I haven't tried netgear since early 2000's. Figured I'd give them another shot. This was a mistake! Had the router for 2 weeks now and it requires a hard reboot every 2 days. Wifi and hard wire connections hault after 2 days, a reboot of this netgear alone resolves the issue temporarily. I have faster more stable connection on my 9 year old linksys router. I have now switched back to linksys and its staying that way permanently.

Worst Purchase I Have Ever Made

I do not know how this thing has the rating it does. It is literally the worst piece of technology I have ever owned. It turns off when it wants, even with auto-update disabled. You get a laggy connection no matter the isp (I have used for 2 different isp). I have to reset it at least once a day. I thought it was not working correctly so I brought it back and got a new one, same results. DO NOT BUY! LOOK ELSEWHERE!!!

    Loses Internet connectivity DAILY.

This router loses connection to the internet daily. Based on web research, this seems to be a common problem. I am drying different routes including forums to rectify this; but currently am very disappointed. Short of a miracle this will be the last piece of NETGEAR equipment I buy.

    Not a modem router, beware!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is more of a review about Bestbuy than Netgear. I talked with Bestbuy regarding the need for a DSL modem router. He suggested this router and told me it was a modem router that works with both DSL & cable. NOT TRUE, I contacted Netgear and they said this was only a router (R7000) . The (D7000) was the DSL modem router. It is very confusing because unless you verify these model numbers the rest of the information is nearly identical. The Bestbuy person should have known this! So glad I didn't blindly follow his advice. Buyer beware!

    Unconfigurable, unmanagable

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This router is completely worthless for anything other than the most barebones house configuration. If you want o do ANY level of actual management of your network, this will waste your time and have nothing to show for it at the end of your fruitless endeavors. Like so many new devices, they expect you're going to use a cellphone to manage it. Which, again is ONLY useful if you want to let it regurgitate whatever default settings Netgear decided to put in it. The web-based controls for it are severely limited, most notably when it comes to Parental Controls. That last bit is what I needed it for the most. It has two selections it presents on the PC page: Sircle by Disnet, and OpenDNS. However, the OpenDNS selection is BROKEN, probably intentionally. The only thing it presents to you when you select the option is a "Learn More" link, which brings you to an ad for Circle by Disney, and NOT a configuration page for the option you actually selected. And Circle??? Yet another sorely-inadequate starter-version of a service which can ONLY be managed through an Android/iOS app. To begin with, I do not want to have to use a phone to manage the controls. In addition, to actually make the "service" usable, you have to fork over $10/month to Disney, all for something that still wouldn't meet my requirements. So unless you somehow need the extra coverage this supposedly provides, you can purchase some other sorely-inadequate router for *far* less money (I don't need the range, as I have access points placed around the house already)

Worked for the first 2 years... Then it did not.

I bought this router in 2017. It worked well the first 2 1/2 years and then I had ongoing connection issues when working from home in 2020. Now I lose connection several times a day. I am unable to find any support online and it appears others (viewing the Netgear Community message boards) have had the same issue. I tried using the app to solve the issue with no luck. I will be buying a new router and it will not be from Netgear.
